Bending is more than just the single element, looking at Earthbending which has the most number of bending subsets, it is fully possible for the ability to sense other things through vegetation. Psychic bending is also a thing, like Ming-Hua who is a waterbender with no arms in the red lotus, so she learned to used her mind to bend the water, combustion bending is also a form of psychic bending that combines air and firebending the way it is done. Air Nomads could sense the world around them using the very element they could bend. This theory holds a lot of water

Theres a book that goes into combustion bending, the basic run down is fire benders were forced to go into deep depths of water (tied up I think) and bend fire. They used extreme measures for these benders to be able to do that, thats why we see them take huge deep breaths when combustion bending. Many of these fire benders died during this process.

And as someone already pointed out, the Cabbage vendor looks like the Swamp inhabitants, his skin colour and his hairstyle has only ever been seen from that side of the Earth Kingdom. It makes sense too, since his cabbage business (as far as I remember) is only within the Earth Kingdom. He grows his cabbages in the Swamp where they are all connected, he harvests them and maybe because of the way cabbage is made up (with how much water content it retains), his doesn’t lose his connection with them as long as they are bunched up together within proximity to each other. Like, in every town leading up to the bigger cities, he maybe plants a few cabbages here and there or just stores them. So they maintain that link to the Swamp which he can then tap into with his water or Earth bending to see around the World. That, or he tamed a spirit that loves cabbages which could also make sense if he’s from the Swamp since those guys are attuned spiritually. If he has tamed cabbage loving spirits, then he could potentially have a network of cabbage spirits hanging out around where cabbages are (which is basically the entire world), and then they relay whatever new information they learn back to the main spirit which in turn tells the cabbage merchant about it. I don’t doubt that he knows more than he lets on, and the Red Lotus stuff works well too.

Well, I mean in the comics (which is canon) there was a chapter i think called 'new recruits' and that chapter showed 4 people with unique bending abilities. I only remember two and one of those two was a young child who was able to bend cookies and one was able bend shadows soooo......Cabbage bending isn't too far fetched, and as Alex theorizes it could be a form of waterbending because you know Cabbage has a lot water in it, 92-96% percentage I believe

I love the theory, but I have to break 1 of the points he made. That being about Omashu and how it got conquered. This wasn't necesserarily because of cabbage slugs, but they did collect the airship parts earlier and may have had copies of blueprints to make more to attack Omashu from the air. And earthbenders are not particularly equiped to deal with long range and, more importantly, airborn targets.

Cabbage bending doesn't sound as stupid if you remember that each element has sub-disciplines (bloodbending, metalbending, lightning, ). So who's to say that earthbending couldn't evolve into plant/nature bending? Poison Ivy style, complete with sentient plants listening in and snitching. Would also explain how the guy keeps easily getting a ton of produce and a brand new wooden cart each time. That stuff ain't cheap you know and there's no way a random retail veggie merchant has the type of funds needed to restart a business after getting everything he has destroyed every couple episodes. And as to why he never uses this op power for anything else but cabbages / tells or teaches anyone about it / explores its possibilities further? Because he's just an obsessed weirdo, that's why. No different from every 2nd DC villain who has an extremely specific theme that he never deviates from.

Cabbage bending can actually be canon believe it or not; in the official short story avatar comics there was a story called "New Recruits", in it Aang and the gang try to recruit new members to help take down the fire nation, Old man Yahshi then brings 4 different benders with unique abilities. There was one bender who could manipulate shadows and there was another who was able to bend cookies, yes actually. Technically since this is an official comic that is canon to the show it is basically confirmed that aside from the 4 elements it is also possible to bend other things as well, so if a literal child can bend chocolate chip cookies then it's pretty safe to say that the merchant cabbage bending isn't so far fetched at all, I'm surprised Alex didn't use this piece of evidence to back up the cabbage bending claim, it would've really help to solidify parts of this theory low-key

Also, remember king bumi said "we'll do nothing" when the fire nation attacked which is why they took over omashu, king bumi told aang about neutral jing and finding the right time to strike when the enemy is VUNURABLE........this could be why bumi didn't want to defend omashu and preached about neutral jing, maybe the fire nation used the same principle and attacked omashu when they were weak due to rotten cabbages destroying the cities ecosystem (poisoning the people and soldiers) and the fire nation knowing the secret entrance that would be a fairly noticable disadvantage.......king bumi must have known this assuming the theory is true and decided the best answer was practicing of neutral jing
