Lyn, all of your seedlings look great! You truly have the magic touch of patience and TLC for plants. It's so amazing to see the little cacti seedling balls (no larger than a pinhead) grow into small cacti! I have had to do a doubletake myself; as I thought those small balls might be some sort of fertilizer or something. Can't wai to see the seedlings grow!

Seedlings are looking great and heathy Lynn, thanks for the update! My 56 varieties are all still kicking here. I was fighting a nasty case of fungus gnats for the ones out of bags for a while, finally got em under control. I was looking back at your LED grow light videos here as I have been thinking about picking a couple up for the winter here.
@desertplantsofavalon6 жыл бұрын
Fungus gnats are such a pain I have had so much trouble with them too once out the bags, and they are so awful for eating the fine roots and killing the young seedlings I absolutely hate them, and I have found the only real thing that works is watering Neem oil into the soil and using the sticky yellow traps for the adult flies, the LED are BRILLIANT especially at this time of year :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and heaps of PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a wonderful Wednesday XXXXX

Very cool. So you actually have several saguaros now. That's great. I'm thrilled to see a nepenthes in there. How is that plant doing in your care? It's totally different requirements from cactus. And is starting seeds of stapelia the same as what you mentioned in your seed starting video?
@desertplantsofavalon5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Des :-D its so wonderful to have the little Saguaros grown from seed :-D The Nepenthes are growing really well in the grow room and we keep them well watered with rainwater all through the Winter, the first year we kept them in the polytunnel but they didn't like the low temps in there and a few of them lost their roots and i had to re root some of them from cuttings :-D Stapelia's are wonderful to grow from seeds and they do really well with the baggy method as in my seed starting video :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and thank you so much for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX
@ScaryFear4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynn. I have watched your video on how to plant cactus seeds over and over and over. I have little plastic trays like the ones you where you have your saguaros. Mine have clear lids. I also have a big clam shell one that's all clear. I'd rather not drill holes in them. Can I use the same method of making soil and such but instead of using bags will clear plastic domes that close work for starting seeds and no drain holes? I've got some rare seeds I need to get started that I've had since winter.
@desertplantsofavalon4 жыл бұрын
Hi Des :-D yes the good news is you can use the plastic trays with the clear lids and also the clam shell too to sow and grow your cactus seeds in, and we sometimes use the clear domes on the top of our pots too instead of the zip lock bags, this keeps the humidity in the pots, because the clam shell doesn't have any drainage holes you could use extra grit or sharp sand for extra drainage, and as long as you are careful with the watering it will still be safe to sow and grow your seeds in the clam shell, some of my seed trays don't have drainage holes and I use extra grit and it works well too, thats so exciting you have rare seeds to sow :-D I hope they grow well for you and it would be brilliant if you make a video when you have sown them too
@ScaryFear4 жыл бұрын
@@desertplantsofavalon Oh that's great to hear. I have these nice shallow To Go sushi trays with snap on clear lids. I used one with the bag method you showed and two others with just the clear lids. Oh, I already sewed them and didn't flim anything. I thought about it but decided not to in case they fail. I guess I should have and then kept the footage and shown it three months later if it works. Those kinds of videos are nice because the viewer doesn't have to wait. I got some copiapoa and astrophytum seeds from some guy in Russia and I hope they will grow for me. I hope they aren't too old because I got them in Dec, but I know cactus seeds wait a long time for rain.
@desertplantsofavalon4 жыл бұрын

Hello, Lyn! Long time listener first time caller. I planted a variety of seeds last spring using the baggy method, but I'm afraid to take them out of the bags now... mostly because I don't know how to water them when they're freshly acclimated to the open air. Do you have a specific watering regime for new seedlings? or just to treat them like a normal cactus? Thanks for all the information and inspiration!
@padraigkiley71205 жыл бұрын
I just saw the comment about watering during the winter, that might well answer my question. Thanks!
@desertplantsofavalon5 жыл бұрын
Hi Padraig :-D yes I let the soil on the very top of the seedling pots dry slightly before I water them again just enough water to stop the delicate root hairs from drying out, but i let the top of the soil dry out slightly in between watering :-D thanks so much for your fantastic comment and for watching and sending lots of love and PLANT POWER your way for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

Hey, I had a quick question. Is it bad that algae grows with my cacti seedlings? Will it harm them down the road at all or is it fine to keep around?
@desertplantsofavalon5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonathan :-D Algae and Moss can be harmless but it can sometimes swamp the seedlings, I sprinkle some very fine grit or sharp horticultural sand on the top of the seedling pots if I find I have moss or algae and this really helps to kill back the moss and algae, I very very gently scrape as much off as I can and then sprinkle sharp sand onto the top around the seedlings and this works very well I find :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you tons of love and heaps of PLANT POWER for a fantastic Saturday XXXXX
