Greetings chess players! My name is Chris Torres and this is my Daily Chess Musing for Saturday, February 3, 2024.
As the Editor for the CalChess Journal, I play an important role in presenting stories and preserving the history of chess players in Northern California. I have never felt a greater sense of this responsibility than with trying to portray the late Richard Shorman’s lasting legacy to chess within the pages of the CalChess Journal.
Helping to preserve Richard Shorman’s legacy is important as it ensures that his many contributions and impact on Northern California chess are not forgotten. By preserving his legacy, we honor his life and lessons, fostering a sense of admiration and gratitude. I hope his legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the impact a single human can make, motivating others to strive for excellence and how one person can make such a positive difference in other’s lives and communities. Furthermore, preserving Mr Shorman’s legacy ensures that his valuable chess insights, wisdom, and values continue to guide and inspire future generations, leaving an enduring legacy that transcends time.
I need to thank two people whose contributions made this magazine possible:
1. My wife, Meghan Torres who did the formatting and layout for this issue and
2., Chess master and California Chess Historian Kerry Lawless who gave me access to a treasure trove of articles and photographs by Richard Shorman. Without their help, I could not have created this issue.
