This is the bird that started my bird fever. I lived out to Washington and discovered a family in my yard. They get so plump this time of the year. Seeing them in snow is something else too

The word plump does not suffice. Routund shall do.

This is Califia’s Quail. A regal bird. The state of California should make trafficking and gaming of this bird *illegal* and a *felony offense* . It’s *cultural* and regional fauna. Sacred.

One of the best wildlife videos on KZbin! No unnecessary music and dramatic slow motion and repeat crap. Just the birds doing their thing with their sounds and sounds of other birds. It felt like I was there. Sometimes less is more. Very well done!

The coolest thing about quail is that they move about like a little military unit. They travel in herds of maybe up to a dozen and they always keep one stationed up high to keep an eye out and warn the rest. And they prefer to walk rather than fly so you often see them marching in a little line.

Scott Johnson I have seen huge coveys of California quail on the road where I live here on the central coast of California. One time I managed to count 60 something before they began to mix with new comers from the side of the road. There had to be more than 80. The other thing I noticed immediately about the behavioral difference between California and Bobwhite quail is that California quail are much more arboreal and fly more. I love everything about CA quail. They and their calls are beautiful.
@smellyolegoat1504 жыл бұрын
Hans Johansen You are so right. I have 46 free range chickens. I throw scratch out for the chickens and quail. I currently have a small covey of between 8 and 10 that come twice a day at least. In the summer the parents bring their babies. It's so fun to watch and listen to them. I have seen some shocking behavior from some of them. A pair came in with a clutch of 8 babies one evening. The babies were still mostly down, but had their flight feathers. As the family went about eating the scratch a single male came in. The dad tried to drive him away but seemed to want to keep an eye on the kids more than drive the interloper away. The next thing I knew, the little tramp hen deserted her mate and her offspring and left with the other male. She never rejoined them. She would come in with the new male. The dad would come in with the babies. They came from totally different directions. It was sad, but that father quail was amazing.

I discovered a male and female California quail in my front yard recently. They seem to have settled in underneath a photinia. I'm hoping to give them enough space to where they can feel comfortable enough to reproduce there.it's been enjoyable seeing him out there with a little feather dangling over their beaks and their unique noises that they make.

Hi Queen Quail. I also have a male California Quail that was given to me at about 1-2 days old, by a friend that had found him, lost from his family. He is now 12 weeks old, and is my house pet, along with a few parrots, a dog, and a rabbit. Do you keep Mr Cheep Cheep in a bird cage? If not, what do you keep him in? Also, what do you primarily feed him? Thank you for any information you can provide!

@tsuga45312 жыл бұрын
@@aliciaolivares4906 They can be expensive since its best to get them in groups, just like with any outdoor bird. I'd suggest getting them from Murray McMurray hatchery, their birds are very well bred. You probably already got the birds though since you replied a year ago.

There is a covey or flock in our area - we live on the edge of a natural preserve and the group of about 15 or so come out to feed. They cross the street on ground and come up the embankment behind our house, and now they have discovered the bird feeder in my back yard. The finches, sparrows, mourning doves all splash seed onto the ground. The quail are so fun to watch, especially when they scurry around the fence line and come into the yard. When they are done, they take the short flight back into the brush in the canyon. They are beautiful.

Add them to the list of habitats in Southern Arizona. I feed the local birds every day at a specific time and all kinds of birds arrive and line up on the telephone wire (lazy boogers). The funniest and the ones with the most personality are the quail. Watching them interact, chase each other, try to woo a potential sweetie pie to mate with, is mesmerizing and what a show they put on! I literally sit quietly at a short distance where they can't see me. They're thugs and goofiness is always going on. Its the only part of the year where I can sit outdoors in the shade for any length of time. The rest of the year is either cold or the temperature of a glass blowing furnace. But it's worth it to watch them court the ladies and run around kicking each others' butts to get to the seed. LOL

I planted separate male female kiwi vines that developed into a huge rookery for the California Mountain Quail on place. It intertwined on some posts, rails, and poles to the size of 8' ft. high, 10' ft. wide, and 16' ft. long trellis. There were about a dozen of the grey breasted with brown and black feathers that lived, roosted, and nested on the entangled long vines. Occasionally a female wood hatched about 12 chicks and would run around eating low flower pods. They even ventured in the horse and mini donkey corrals to pick up the seed from the hay we threw out. Very distinctive calls, chirps, and gobblegrunts came from their beaks and throats. Redtail Hawks would cruise the area to try to catch one. Was a site to see along with the wild bronze breasted turkeys with purple heads, red waddles, and a 6" long tail of a beard. Thanks for the clips of some of them coming iut of their egg shells.

I live in the foothills of California and there are a ton of quail in my area. I have at least 3 families just on the 1.5 acres I'm on. I LOVE watching them. A family (the mom and dad always take the babies out together) just walked by moments ago with some VERY young babies, feeding in my shrubs. They are so cute. Sometimes they'll get separated and they start making calls at each other - then the babies will run to their parents.
