Turk Sultan Salim 1 abolished Khilafat in 1517 when he captured Egypt and holy land and took Abbasi Khalifa with him to Istanbul. Some historians say Salim executed the Khalifa but others say that Khalifa himself surrendered his title. Turks rulers kept their tiles Sultan until first world war broke out and they feared to lose umpire and they started using both titles Sultan and Khalifa. However, its worth mentioning that after abolishing the Khalifa they abandoned true teachings of Islam and started fighting to gain power and control of the world. They probably executed the Khalifa and his entire family which was taken to Turkey by Salim 1 as we don't find traces of the Abbasid family in Turkey. Very sad indeed.

But in matters of politics the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said that the Khalifa has to be of Qurayshi lineage and this was the basis on which Abu Bakr was appointed Khalifa even though the Ansar had already picked Sa'd ibn Ubabah as their Khalif. Abu Bakr explained to them "This matter (of Khilafa) is within the Quraysh. We are the Umara [commanders] and you are the Wuzara [ministers, advisors].” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam also said, “Verily Allah selected Kinanah from the descendants of Isma’il. He selected Quraysh from Kinanah. He selected Bani Hashim from Quraysh. He selected me from Bani Hashim." And lastly “Whoever wants to degrade Quraysh will be degraded by Allah”
