The specific thing that Young Sook’s ‘step-mother/aunt’ responds when she asks why she is trying to kill her is actually quite interesting. She says something to the effect of “there will be many deaths in your future” which has a double meaning in this film. Both that she as a shaman foresaw her becoming a serial killer and it also alludes to the fact people can die then become alive again in this flip-floppy time transversing universe.

Past Girl eats them like a glutton after killing her mom and before killing the strawberry farmer. @aaronmolo25953 жыл бұрын
I believe she DID kill Seoyeon’s mom moments after she regained consciousness, BUT left her alive and ran away to hide from the police. She successfully gets away and hides for 20 years allowing the events of the movie to transpire. However, this would mean that Seoyeon would have to have forgotten about the events of almost dying as a child and the way her mother died, (which might be possible to the extreme trauma of the events). It’s possible that she went back to that house a few years before Seoyeon “arrives”, since I would assume that police aren’t investigating her or the house anymore, and calls her past self to warn her about her demise.

The movie creates a paradox: with yung sook avoiding arrest, she keeps the house and never sells it. This would then mean that our protagonist would not be living there and would have never have gone to the house to answer the phone in the first place. So she could have never helped her avoid being murdered and then help her avoid arrest. The twist ending confirmed this (even though it makes no sense). She lives to the present, keeping the phone and helps her past self avoid death (huge plothole) to ensure her own survival.

@@jga5678 but wouldn’t it go against the rule of how it works so far tho? Since the mom and her clearly got away and lived til present moment, so the twist feel like it worked outside of the rule established by the movie. Would be kind of mind boggling that she and her mom stick around long enough for YS to get up and finish off the mom, or that they didn’t go to the police about it and have them check the house (I know they showed that the police in this town is kinda meh about things but come on one of their officer was killed). Honestly the movie was great but boy a lot of the main girl decisions made me hate it so much. I.E. the strawberries guy, she clearly know YS action can change the present and she decided to ASK if she killed the guy and proceed to read the news article of YS going to jail for life to her, like wtf?
@sunshinejournaling4 жыл бұрын
@@jga5678 the killer was literally on the floor bleeding her head out... Did she get up after that and kill the mom? But that means MC would have never jumped to her happy ending future. There's no way this can happen because that implies that the future already exists with multiple outcomes like a parallel universe. But that would throw off the whole "linear" timeline they established (there is only one universe with no parallels). And why are you talking about the owner of the house being able to call when the MC was not the owner of the house when her father lived but could call. That's another contradiction. The movie has plotholes and contradictions. It had an interesting premise and story but they should have thought about this more. I also wanted to add that the killer's future self calling her past self about the mom and officer would be a continuous-time loop which renders the happy ending impossible to even occur in the first place. Another thing I just thought of and want to deep dive into: the killer is there bleeding out of her head wound, and you want us to believe she survive. So let's say she does... does she go to the hospital? She definitely can't treat a wound like that by herself while also getting rid of a huge amount of evidence (dead cop and mother) and keeping child MC captive. The little girl is more than capable of escaping and getting help. The cops would have been sent to look for the missing officer, they just wouldn't have ignored him. If the killer would have gone to the hospital, they would have asked questions but again, it's unbelievable she would have moved around or done much because that's a lot of brain damage going on. If they wanted us to believe her surviving a fall like that and the events that followed then they should have shown it. Instead, they didn't and expected audiences to be dumb enough to accept things or brush them off. Another issue is how this place is treated like a huge city where people are hard to be found and nobody knows anybody but looks more like a small town or rural community.

My theory is that the end credit scene where the mom is killed was actually an alternate ending. This can be explained by the fact that in the original ending, future Young-sook disappears as she is about to strike Seo-yeon. This indicates that Young-sook dies in the original ending. So, it's likely that the end credit scene is a "what if" scenario. What I think happens in the alternate ending is that Young-sook plays dead long enough for Seo-yeon and her mother to suspect that they won the fight. So, this results in future Young-sook to stay alive long enough to warn past Young-sook about Officer Beak and Seo-yeon's mom.
@gamingmementoz41813 жыл бұрын
I thought it was an alternate ending at first until I rewatch the movie again and noticed the alternate ending scene was in the movie. When seo yeon was sneaking around waiting for the adult Young sook to leave, Young sook was on the phone with someone telling the person they are about to die. This was revealed to be Young Young sook in the “alternate ending”.

Just watched the movie, and the ending threw me off until I remembered that present!Seo-yeon doesn't have her memories changed when time changes around her. I think what happened is past!Young-sook didn't die after the fight with past!Seo-yeon's mother, which present!Seo-yeon didn't realize. Presumably, present!Young-sook went into hiding long enough to get the phone at the time of the cemetery scene and then rearranged stuff for fridge-world!Young-sook to get a call from past!Young-sook that present!Seo-yeon missed, which happened to happen right as present!Seo-yeon was freaking out from the transition into the fridge-world. It's the results of that call chain which lead to past!Seo-yeon's mother being killed and present!Seo-yeon being captured in the basement (after a different version of the confrontation between present!Seo-yeon and present!Young-sook). It's a bit mixed up, but I think it does kind of work out in that way. And hell, it's still a cool movie either way :D

@@Sara_Feingold I am still confused as in why present(a week earlier)Seo-yeon help the past young-sook?? when she might never wanted to go back to the house again after what happened to her in childhood or maybe it was present young-sook who was helping her younger self but still why she would make her life into hiding for 20 years she can plan better escape from whole thing.
@Sara_Feingold3 жыл бұрын
@@yachikankumar7233 There are two possible explanations I can see for that: 1. Once the past has been changed, those changes stay even if the present/future changes in a way that would stop them from happening (i.e. after Seo-yeon helped Young-sook avoid dying in the "exorcism", that was locked in regardless of how else the timeline gets altered). 2. Seo-yeon and Young-sook are partly exempt from changes to the timelines (e.g. Seo-yeon is surprised about her father being alive in their garden after past!Young-sook prevented the accident even though she would have spent her whole life with her father), so their previous actions don't get changed even if the rest of the timeline changes in a way that means they wouldn't have done what they did. Either way, once present!Young-sook was old enough to call past!Young-sook, she wouldn't be able to change anything that happened more than 20 years before the present moment in the current timeline, so she must have made a call to change something 20 years back from the moment when Seo-yeon's mother fades away. (Or, shorter answer, time travel stories are always weird, so you kind of have to just roll with what the story says beyond a certain point lol)

The theory that makes the most sense is one i saw on imdb, the protagonist never reached the past, Young Sook is only the burried reflection of her, the hidden mosnter that killed her father. She burried every emotion regarding the death of her father and blamed her mother even though we realised that she was innocent and the protagonist caused the fire. She dreamed of every scenario possible where the whole family were happy but in the end things were unavoidable, like the brain cancer of the mother, nothing in the past would a changed that. But you can still believe that the past somehow reached her, Young Sook is the same age ,with the same hate for the mother (that is also trying to burn her) and a dead father, same hand shape/line etc

I don't think any of the magic phone and past-changing stuff actually happened. I think that Yungsook is a manifestation of Seoyeon trying to come to terms with the fact she accidently killed her own father as a child. If you look at when she's playing before the the fire started, she's even playing with a little plastic cooking set. I also think it's a bit coincidental that a 'stove safety' infomercial is playing right before. I don't think that was literally playing at the time, I think that's just her memories telling her she should have known better... I think when her mum went out and turned the stove off, she went and turned it back on to play with the 'real cooking set'. She might have even accidently spilled the hot cooking pot on her self - leading to the burns (and the memory manifests as Yungsook l torturing her younger self with boiling water) and maybe that's what caused the fire to get out of control. Perhaps she ran out the house and hid (maybe even to the strawberry fields? hence why those keep popping up) thinking she would get in trouble for spilling everything and that's why she didn't alert her father and how he slept through the whole thing.... She projects her trauma onto her mother (and Yungsook) as a way of coping with the guilt. The shaman-aunt beating and punishing Yungsook is a manifestation of how the guilt and anger between Seoyeon and her mother. I think killing the shaman was contemplating how she could let her mother die of her cancer and how that might give her of her freedom from her guilt, as well as having more money to spend on herself instead of on her mum's very expensive treatment. I think the 'serial killings' are a representation of her destroying relationships with those around her to try and escape the guilt and trauma.

Here's an explanation for anyone that are puzzled by the ending or feel that it contradicts it's own rules. I think it's the only one that makes sense and covers what I initially thought were plot holes. We can only imagine what happened off screen in the past to ys, sy and her mom after the fall. What we know for sure is the fight between ys and the mom resulted in changing the physical location and situation of present ys. To what or where, we do not know. Just that she's no longer using the house as a hideout for her killings. Hence not physically present to land the killing blow on sy. So here's the part we can theorize. There's a period of unaccounted time that we might not realize. The new present timeline allows sy ENOUGH TIME to leave the house, run to the cemetery which should be a distance away and eventually reunite with her mom, chat and take a stroll away from there. Now remember, the present is fixed until a decision is changed regarding the life/death of a person in the past. And resulting changes to the present will happen with sy as the anchor (the world changes, but not sy's location). Sy, as well as us the viewers, assumes that ys died from the fall due to her disappearing, and the whole situation is now settled. Forgetting that she could've simply been relocated. What could've happened in the past during this SAME TIMEFRAME after the fall (both past and present runs parallel time wise, 5pm there, 5pm here) is that the mom took young sy out of the house, maybe called the authorities or not. Ys also survived as shown in the mid credits and we can theorize that she left the house too, abandoning it, hence present house no longer used as a hideout. From this point on there's a decision ys can make to change the future, which is to persue and kill the mom. The present is currently running on the automatic decision that the mom survives and escapes. And ys, as shown, decided to still change the future resulting in a new present where sy is being held captive. As to how she killed the mom or evaded authorities n what not, that's for us to imagine. The movie deliberately leaves out showing us what exactly happened off camera during that unaccounted time. Such narrative techniques been used before in other stories, whether to divert our attention, allow us space to imagine etc or to give us a sucker punch twist.

In fact, everything in the past, second by second, changes the future. momently. In the movie, they only showed changes when major events occurred: her father being saved, being killed again, the killer destroying the evidence. These have shown their effects 20 years later, but they change all the time. After destroying the evidence, it appears that 20 years later, Yong Sook is still alive. If she is caught, she will go to prison after 20 years. If she is killed, she will disappear. Everything can change at any moment, so she must always report it to past self. When they fell down the stairs with their mother, none of them died and 20 years later they appeared as mother and daughter. When the killer got up and killed her mother, her mother disappeared and we saw that the girl was tied up in the basement, which was captive for 20 years in 2020. Of course, this may change again. It goes like this. It's strange, but I think our lives right now are progressing the same way. Each choice destroys another scenario.

‘Magic time-travel phone’ is almost becoming a thing in Korea; my all-time favorite K-drama ‘Signal’ uses police radios to stop a serial killer in the past by communicating with a cold-case squad in the present. I remember hearing that it was based off an earlier movie. Crucially though, they never let the killer know about their time-travel radio.

long answer short: The past and The future are happening in parallel time after SY changed the past, YS went unconscious for a while and she disappeared in the future then went back again where she killed her mom after she became conscious
@hanzolee11742 жыл бұрын
My take on the bad ending is that in the past Young Sook actually survived the fall and took the phone, waited for 20 years to be able to call her past self and save herself. The reason why we have the first ending is that it still hasn't been changed by Young Sook, making Seon Yin think that everything worked out fine. The reason why the environment changed, to Seon yin being in captive is because if past Young Sook along with help of her future self killed the cop and the mom, then Seon Yin will still be held captive by Young Sook until 20 years would past where she can be killed safely without altering the actions of Seon yin helping past Young Sook. Although my take completely disregards the butterfly effect where if past Young Sook with the help of her future self does holds the past Seon Yin captive for the entire 20 years, then that would mean no one would've helped past Young Sook escape from her step mom in the first place.

Ι like to pretend that she and her mother survived and the other was just a nightmare due to her trauma after what happened. I really rooted for her character throughout the film and she trying to trick the past girl to where the accident happened was so smart

I was happy when they showed her mother still alive. It was a bittersweet feeling of knowing that she killed her father by helping the killer, while at least having the chance to forgive her mother. But I enjoyed the twist ending even more because she was ultimately the one who did that to herself through the decisions she made. There is just something enjoyable about unhappy endings where the main characters loose.
