Usually, only the first verse was sang, until 01:22. The Call of South Africa Ringing out from our blue heavens, From our deep seas breaking round; Over everlasting mountains Where the echoing crags resound; From our plains where creaking wagons Cut their trails into the earth Calls the spirit of our Country, Of the land that gave us birth. At thy call we shall not falter, Firm and steadfast we shall stand. At thy will to live or perish, O South Africa, dear land.
@GoodVideos42 жыл бұрын
Here are the last 3 verses: In our body and our spirit, In our inmost heart held fast; In the promise of our future And the glory of our past; In our will, our work, our striving, From the cradle to the grave - There’s no land that shares our loving, And no bond that can enslave. You have borne us and we know you. May our deeds to all proclaim. Our enduring love and service To your honor and your name. In the golden warmth of summer, In the chill of winter’s air, In the surging life of springtime, In the autumn of despair; When the wedding bells are chiming Or when those we love depart, You do know us for your children And does take us to your heart. Loudly peals the answering chorus: We are yours and we will stand, Be it life or death, To answer to your call, Beloved land. In your power, Almighty, trusting, Did our fathers build of old; Strengthen then, O Lord, Their children to defend, to love, to hold - That the heritage they gave us For our children yet may be; Bondsmen only to the highest And before the whole world free. As our fathers trusted humbly, Teach us Lord, to trust you still; Guard our land and guide our people In Your way to do Your will.

South Africa and the USA have had similar histories. For instance both started as partly Dutch, and then British, colonies. It also seems almost like whatever happens in the one country, also happens in the other. For instance, in 1994 both moved more from isolation and into the international community. South Africa was with the first democratic elections, and the USA was with the Soccer World Cup. There have also been Americans and South Africans who have said that there should be more cultural exchanges between the two countries. (No politics.) What I thought of, is everywhere in that 'Call of South Africa' anthem, where it says 'South Africa' change it to 'America'. It still fits. And, can be a song of theirs.
@GoodVideos42 жыл бұрын
There was also the song of the flag: Cradled in beauty forever shall fly In the gold of her sunshine, the blue of her sky South Africa’s pledge of her freedom and pride To her own selves true, and to God above Our faith shall keep what our hearts enthrone The flag of the land that is all our own. What I thought of here, is with three lines changed to: In the red and white of her liberty sunshine stripes, The blue of her starry sky. America’s pledge of her freedom and pride

Of course racial issues has to keep being brought into it! It's also typical of human nature to focus on negative things. Regarding more cultural exchanges - South Africans staying in the USA, and Americans staying in South Africa (includes 6000 in Cape Town) can have blendings of the two cultures. Examples of cultural exchanges that I thought of, are with pumpkin recipes, and country music.

Odd that the words are only in English. What about Afrikaans (I am assuming that the creator of the video doesn't acknowledge the other racial groups in SA)?. Also, the map in the video is not a map of South Africa. It is a map of South African and South West Africa, depicting them as one country, which was never the case. SWA was administered by SA under a League of Nations / UN mandate, before Namibia became self-governing.
@GoodVideos43 жыл бұрын
It is also in Afrikaans: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXrMgoamnrR7h68 It was first written in Afrikaans, and then in English. I agree about South Africa and South West Africa having never been one country. At the time, South Africa had 4 provinces, and wanted to make South West Africa the 5th province. It never did, but regarded South West Africa as that. South West Africa was also much like that. Hence, that map. It would have been more correct if South Africa and South West Africa were separate flag maps of the previous South African flag, and adjoining.

the map is wrong, South Africa has neverr included South West Africa, let alone the Caprivi Strip. The lyrics were written by a second-language speaker, the reason the first stanza particularly works so well is that his language is the most modernized form of Anglo-Saxon, afrikaans, Norwegian is not far behind, but it includes southern Danish (English), Dutch, Flemish and bears a stronger relationship to Swiss German than actual German. The common source is The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer, modern English is about 30% Anglo-Saxon. This is third only to "I vow to thee my country"-English national anthem, and Finlandia (see Joan Baez). But it is a world-beater. The Italians are the musical geniuses of the world but their national anthem simply repeates 'Italia' all the time. Canada's is boring and Britain's is gloomy and depressing. In German 'God Save the King' sounds far better, see German Imperial natiional anthem, it was the anthem of all the great empires but the British saw it as a funeral march.

It stopped being a colony all the way back in 1910 when it became the union of South Africa it was an independent dominion of the British empire it then became an independent republic in the 1960s and left Commonwealth in the 1960s and afterwards all world nations started to sanction off the country to kill the economy because of its racism which lasted till 1994 it became apartheid SA in the 40s even though the King was against segregation and the whole thing and that prompted the government to start a delete of the monarchy and in 1994 South Africa became an equal independent state from the Afrikaans and rejoined the commonwealth as a republic

Thiis is a great and very distinctive anthem. Unfortunately, it carries the stink of the apartheid regime, which was not inevitable. Even so, the song itself is above reproach, and is applicable not only to Afrikaners, but to all the peoples of South Africa. At the very least it would be an improvement over the ANC's version of The Itsy Bitsy Spider.

Modern South Africa's anthem is disappointing, an anthem is one thing the apartheid regime did right... Why not each and every one of your language have a version to itself? And not glom the languages into one song?? The Soviet Union did that one correctly!!
