South Africa was never going to stay the way it was. For every 100 good memories and experiences of the "old South Africa" there are 10,000 bad ones; that isn't to say that your experience is wrong or invalid, just that you should hold them beside all the suffering that went on during that same time to the majority of the people in the country you remember. The injustice from the system that created the beautiful South Africa you remember (and rightfully so, your experience is absolutely balanced) was too gargantuan to leave the country unchanged. @Sam • What about the border between Europe and Africa then? Migration is a fenomen that occurs frequently in human history. Within Europe, but also outside of it. A large chunk of the European gene pool can be attributed to a people from Russia. Also, Spain was once inhabited by many Scandinavians, as was North-Africa. Later, the Moroccans conquered Spain and this altered Spain as well. And in the case of the Boers we're talking about a people and not an invading army. Or would you suggest a group of farmers with wagons, women and children and their modest belonings were a "colonial power"? That's absurd. Don't be a hypocrit. You dislike the Afrikaners because they are white. And now you want the black South Africans to take the buildings and infrastructure the Afrikaners caused to exist. It's theft. Jealousy.

Ik this is negatively associated with the despicable Apartheid regime, but it’s just such a great song. It talks about the beauty of this country: the seas, the skies, the plains. It embodies the heritage of Afrikaners, a history and language that I am deeply fascinated with. It talks about life: the four seasons, a simple living, and nature. It is a beautiful prayer to God, and tells a story. Ofc, the current South African national anthem is also beautiful, combined with Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika. But this isn’t a racist song. It’s a wonderful piece of music, that is so much more than just a national anthem. God bless South Africa. ❤🇿🇦

Mee too. This flag doesn’t have to be a symbol of Apartheid, the same as Australia’s and New Zealand’s flags aren’t a symbol for white supremacy and colonialism anymore. This flag tells a story and is part of SA’s heritage. The same as die stem.

@@ArgentinaFan76 Fair point. I think there is just so much hurt attached to this flag, that you probably have no account for, that even the mere mention of someone liking this flag better feels like an attack.

The African Marigold plant a.k.a. Afrikaantje in Dutch has been renamed in a eastern city in the Netherlands this week. Now even flowers seem to be racist, it's getting more and more idiotic everywhere.

Funny how I can understand parts of the anthem without even trying (native Swedish speaker, and I studied German in school for a few years). I get the impression that a native Afrikaans speaker would fairly easily learn Swedish and vice versa.
