The Callisto Protocol is a 2022 survival horror video game developed by Striking Distance Studios and published by Krafton. It was directed by Glen Schofield, who had previously co-created the Dead Space series. The game's story follows Jacob Lee (Josh Duhamel) who is sent to a prison facility set on the Jovian moon Callisto fighting against infected prisoners with an unknown disease while uncovering dark secrets of the facility. Gameplay has players exploring a series of levels, solving puzzles, and garnering resources while fighting off infected prisoners.
Development of the game began with the formation of Striking Distance Studios back in June 2019. Originally developed as a game set in the PUBG: Battlegrounds universe along with the company, it later evolved into the studio's own intellectual property (IP) with its own original story and lore.
The game was released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on December 2, 2022. It received generally mixed reviews.

I recently discovered Callisto on the PS5. Got it for free and didn’t plan on playing it because of the bad reviews. Suffice to say, after starting the game out of boredom I couldn’t put the controller down. Why in the world this game got bad reviews is beyond me. This is a fantastic game and the graphics are ridiculous. The radio comms going through the dual sense speakers is a nice touch and also adds to the immersion.

Callisto Protocol is gonna become one of those "cult classics" like "The Thing" and "Scarface" for example that got horrible release at first but years down the line people grow to appreciate and even love it. Callisto feels like a better version of RE3make and DS is like RE2make in a way if you compare them. Callisto just feels short and linear. It's best when it comes to characters, story, gore and when they actually DO let you explore a little. The graphics and sound design are also amazing at times, but lackluster in others. In the end, it's a solid 7 or 8 out of 10. Just feels like a tease and makes you wish it had more, especially the cliffhanger ending which you had to get DLC to actually finish it.
@MrDueltube

@@greasy8394 Yes Callisto will probably get more respect as the solid survival horror game it is down the line, that's a pretty good comparison actually Callisto reminded me of the RE3 Remake quite a bit, in some ways more than Dead Space. I mean I can understand people's frustrations with the game as when I played it earlier this year all the DLC was released and many of the glitches were patched out. Plus it had quality of life improvements like skippable cutscenes and tweaks to the game like making combat more fluid or making the healing animation faster. So I can understand people's frustrations as it launched in a buggy unfinished state, though I don't think we should act like Callisto is the only game to do that, it's pretty much every game now. As for the cliffhanger ending and requiring a DLC to see the story's end? Again Callisto isn't the only game to do this, actually some games are worse as they end on a cliffhanger and require purchasing the full priced sequel to see the story's finale. Assassin's Creed did that for years. Long story short Callisto Protocol maybe didn't turn out the way some people hoped, definitely has issues but it didn't deserve the absolute thrashing the larger gaming community gave it, like it was some 0 out of 10 game.

It’s not really their fault she’s obnoxious. You’re right, they just made a game in a style they’re passionate about I should give it a fair shake without the stigma of her nonsense attached to it. When RE4 remake releases and I have some down time I’ll probably check it out. 20 bucks is pretty fair for that style of horror in 2023. It’s about what Resident Evil 1 and 0 are priced at individually.

1000% agree with how much tension can be created when you have to face 3 or more enemies at once. That is where I felt the most feared and satisfaction once I overcame the situation. So happy to see a small community of people that love Callisto. The hate Callisto gets (outside of pc performance) is so unwarranted. The game was marketed as is, I don’t understand the “disappointment” when it was made clear that this game wasn’t reinventing the wheel. It was one of my favorite games of last year. Great video brother 👍🏻.
@babybulllets

@@loubloom1941 It doesn’t break. There are so many things you’re able to use to your advantage in combat when overwhelmed. There are environmental hazards that you can use the grip ability to quickly get rid of an enemy. The skunk and riot gun attachments are pretty much crowd control. These things in addition to melee pretty much make you overpowered when you get into the rhythm of using them in combat scenarios. A lot of criticisms I’ve read were about the melee but the games combat isn’t just dependent on that. If you don’t use everything at your disposal then yeah I can see the game being pretty tough and annoying.
@milkycannon444
@milkycannon444 8 ай бұрын
no one asked it to reinvent the wheel lol the complaints are the level design is more linear than the 2008 dead space, if you talk about the remake its not even close. The enemy variety is sub par, the reused mini boss, the awful weapon switch mechanics and tedious heal animation, the same jump scare out of the crates over and over and over and over again. The terribly designed final boss fight, an ending that straight up requires dlc, no real backtracking through any areas, a terrible brain dead dodge system that even alan wake 2 could pull of where you need actual timing and enemies dont attack in set strings of combos, no real puzzles, dead space suffers from this as well but thats also a 15 year old game so crazy of me to want some basic improvements survival horror games over 20 years old have done well. If you think this game gets unwarranted hate outside of pc launch performance, you clearly arent actually listening to what people tell you or have little to no experience with this style of game to be critical of it.

@@milkycannon444 Damn 9 months ago, time flies. Some of your critiques are valid I’ll give you that, but it just goes back to my initial claim. The only goal for Calisto was to be a successor to Dead Space and it is for the most part. It’s not even my favorite survival horror title but it’s far from the worst. It’s enemy variety is fine for an 8 hr title, and the healing takes long purposefully to build tension and keep players on their toes. It was even sped up drastically due to criticisms of it. Biggest issue people had at the time of release was it’s combat which imo was extremely simple to get a hang of. It’s also Striking Distances debut title as a developer. I’m not trying to change anyone’s opinion on the game, my initial comment may have come across that way and looking back probably would’ve worded it differently. But I think high expectations hurt an otherwise decent titles reputation.

Great video! 100% agree with everything you said. So glad you made this video! What I want to add is that I think that a dodge button with directional inputs would have been perfect for this game. Like in Alan Wake or The Last of Us part 2, dodging with good timing would feel even more satisfying. I also wish the game had more enemy types and a bit of a varied arsenal. I would have loved some javelin gun, contact beam or detonator sort of weapon, or something brand new that is not just a dead space weapon. I also have two nitpicks: At the two-head bossfight when I first saw that he ripped himself in half I thought that it would be like a second phase and depending on which head you damage in the first phase it would have different attacks, like the big hand hit knocking you over and needs Jacob to stand up or the bladed hand faking a punch or something, it is a fun fight but could have been improved imo. My other nitpick is that when Jacob gets his head bashed in from Cpt. Ferris or when he gets his eyes popped by the blind enemies I wish it looked a bit better. To me those look like Jacob's head just bends inwards and that's it. Those death animations would look a bit more realistic I think if his head would split open or we would see wounds or something like that. This only pops out to me because the rest of the game is such high quality. This game has so much potential and can't wait how SDS continues this franchise.

Just got the game for free on PS plus (ps5 version) and finished it. I really enjoyed it, and personally don't do too well with survival horror games. I feel like it being linear really helped me finish it, as a bigger, more open horror world easily intimidates a player like me. The close hallways and straightforward way of combat made it very digestible. Even when I died the checkpoints are so good that I never felt a huge loss of progress, and I could work through a chapter for an hour before work, with guaranteed story progress. I plan on doing a new game+ soon but after a break lmao.

@@russian_knight Well let's be honest here. All stories now have been done to death it is how it is done that makes it work. Dead space 1s story was very predictable and linear but it at least had the power to keep you hooked and had good pacing. In Callisto it is very barebones here. an example of how barebones it is can be seen with jacob having hallucinations of the toy box and his dead friend. He shouldn't have any of them when he was not linked to Dani and plus his feeling of being the one who got his friend killed leaves no real feeling of care if you played alot of other horror games and media when you don't really know that character. I find both games suffer with how predictable it can be done story telling wise but at least dead space has pace and story beats that are paced well callisto's feels very rushed and fast.

The callisto protocol is projected to sell 2 million in way less time. 5 million is what Call of Duty can expect to make at worst. NOT a brand new single horror game. My biggest problem with callisto is why would I use the weapons as often as you do in the snippets you show, while the stun baton + dodging allows me to be pretty much invincible. My goal is to conserve ammunition, if the enemy is not very far away I find that it is kinda useless to shoot. Should I force myself to use the guns when I know I could conserve ammo ? It gives me a very weird feeling. So I come to use the melee combat which becomes repetitive very quickly: left right left, blows with the stun baton, and repeat until there are no more enemies. The GRP is the joker I use to get rid of enemies quickly, I don't like to use it when it's not absolutely necessary because it makes me feel like I'm effortlessly getting rid of enemies, it's kind of like pressing a button to skip a fight the same way I would skip a cutscene. Use it in combat to push enemies away? For what reason, I can let them come to me and dodge their blows without any difficulty. Melee combat is way too easy All this gives me a really weird feeling about the gameplay loop, it's not satisfying. I did all the achievements in the game and have finished it 5 times, so I didn't completely hate it but it's really the gameplay that I don't find satisfying enough.

I love the integrity held up here with the opinions, and I love that you thoroughly explained all of your thoughts throughout. On the topic of Callisto, I absolutely loved it from start to finish. It filled that Dead Space craving I've been having, while giving me something new, and I think it filled it better than what the remake would've offered for me. Combat felt good, mechanics all smooth, graphics were fine (played after the Day 1 patch on PC and I wasn't having that many issues), and I liked the story. The Callisto Protocol did everything I was hoping for, and I can't wait for the New Game+ addition and Hard Core mode to come out this February! Your bit about her saying callisto is too action focused really cracked me up because dead space was also really action focused. I know what people find scary is entirely subjective, but I dunno, dead space never scared me, so I wasn’t expecting callisto to either, I just wanted a fun sci fi action horror game and that’s exactly what callisto is. It’s a bit rough around the edges but they’ve already patched the combat a bit and it feels even tighter now. It’s a great game that I’ve platinumed and have run through 4 times and i plan to go a few more times. I don’t really think it plays like dead space but I don’t mind that at all. It’s definitely got a bit of dead space DNA in its combat (mainly the tentacle mechanic and dismemberment) but overall it feels like it’s own thing and I really like it for what it is. They’ve got something awesome here to build off of, I just hope that if we get a sequel they don’t ditch the games melee and gun style of combat cause it’s a lot of fun. And while I do like the story for the most part, I hope they try to improve on the writing for the second one. It’s a decent first outing but I feel like they could’ve done a lot more with the story to bring some feels to it. Elias death was effective and it hit me a little bit but I feel like it could’ve hit so much harder if we got to know him more. And the ending does feel a bit out of no where but despite all that I think it was a fun story.

@Chandler Burse 2’s my favorite in the franchise. I don’t think people necessarily hate 3 JUST cause it’s action focused, it was a lot of things like the huge downgrade in the story telling and writing (that god awful cringey love triangle between Ellie Norton and issac) the weapon customization system, while cool, prevented you from just being able to have a plasma cutter, and a lot of the enemy encounters just kind of sucked. DS2 is action focused and while there’s a few DS1 purists that don’t like or even hate it, it’s still fairly beloved by the fandom. 3 just isn’t as good as 1 or 2 even on its own merits.

I've read a metric ton of Callisto reviews. Most severely skewed negatively, a few more balanced, this is the first one to make me think "Finally! This guy gets it"! You covered everything well both the good points and bad points, and you certainly took on my pet peeve of the huge number of people doing Dead Space comparisons that don't seem to remember what the hell dead space was like ... A simple rule of thumb I use to tell me if a gaming review or discussion channel is even worth watching is to click on them and just scroll down and see how much complaining they do vs how many videos they have where they talk about games they like. You’ll come to find that alot of these channels tend to have a recurring theme of hating everything because it’s low effort to just nitpick and talk about a game’s flaws for some easy views. If they have NOTHING ever positive to say about anything, their gaming takes are usually worthless

Loved this video. This might be the most level-headed overview of the game I've seen so far. I came to really enjoy the game and agree with you about the idea that "critics" just plain suck at the game or rush to get a review out. Or worse, they just slap footage together and bandwagon the popular opinion because it's the hot topic of the day. The RE3 Remake is a victim of this when its gameplay is literally the same as RE2 remake and even does some things better like character interaction and story consistency. It's just a more linear RE game, just like the original was... Like you were saying in the video, judge the game for what you got instead of what you pictured it to be. By the way... At 58:00, the game does tell you how to auto reload the grip. If it depletes and you have more in your inventory, just aim at the enemy and use the Grip again. It'll automatically use the item to reload it. I got the game at launch and it had a tutorial explaining this. Hope to see more videos from you. This was a nice recommendation from KZbin.

I initially played on maximum security and the game had flaws but I liked the game overall. They recently added new game plus and I have been playing that on medium security this time. They fixed some of my initial composites such as slow healing, and weapon swaps and it makes the combat flow so much better and I’m having a blast. I want the IP of Callisto protocol to do well in both dlc and sequels (if it gets one hopefully). I agree the game has flaws but it’s not a trashy game, it’s fun and innovative and I hope to see more.

@Real time Entertainment But Callisto isn't trying to be like Dead Space completely. It's trying to be its own identity with its story, plot, enemies, and game mechanics. Yes, it adapted some similarities from Dead Space, but it isn't trying to be what it really isn't. Because we already seen what happened to games that tried to be the same identity as another game.

@Real time Entertainment I agree games do deserve criticism at times depending on how the game is or what they have that may be an issue or a small minor detail, but that's only if the criticism is reasonable because if people are just nit-picking or just band wagoning without their own conclusions of the game. Then their criticisms are basically invalid and just false information like with Suzi here that we seen.

I think the combat is a great idea but needs to be tweaked like dodging should be based on which direction the attack comes from and make a better system that isn't heavy lock on. Other than that I think the game was really good I like the world and the story isn't game changing but it's solid and felt like home cooking. I think if they tweak combat and if they make the levels more interconnected and explorable I would lose my mind but i don't mind the linear style. I hope the low sales don't stop them from Making more games in the horror genre and our a CP2. Action adventure with a horror theme, but you're spot on, although I never really consider Callisto Protocol a horror games either. Both games have the same problem, your character is way too powerful. Issac can blasts through waves of enemies and Jacob smashes their heads in with a baton, by end game you become a beast. The monster should be afraid of you, not the other way around.

I kind of skimed through the video but, i do agree with the takes here that Sherehunter did mess up on as this game is alot like dead space but where i have problems with this game is that the melee to me i feel is not as fun as you might find it. it took me along while to get used to the dodge system and the combat felt like chore to deal with then fun. I feel they should of made more different enemies then what they had as it was boring to fight. if anything i would of enjoyed enemies that change up how they fight and act. plus one thing i found sad is that when you shot the head off one of the enemies it didn't make them blind or anything, that could of been used to get out of some encounters I feel like blind a enemy or disarm them plus the stun baton felt just like the basic first melee weapon you get. I really feel that at the end of it they should of made combat more like the suffering style of combat or condemned style of combat as both made you need to think and you could back up and deal with all that the game throws at you. I know the update made healing faster and reloading faster along with even weapon swap but the problem still remains. I do enjoy this game alot with how the world feels and prison and so on but I feel they could of done a better job with it. I was really disappointed with it and hope the dlc improves or a second game makes it better as so far. the plot has not been interesting at all.

I've been a fan since the 1st teaser and not got disappointed. A worthy Dead Space 4. Great story, good horror, unexpected moments of shocks/frights, suspense, moments of horror... great graphics and audio as well as an oppressive atmosphere!! The close-up-fights are good and really fun. Sometimes you have to be really fast. Like Mortal Kombat with multiple opponents. Sometimes tactic changes are needed when restarting from a checkpoint - suddenly the level behaves completely differently after x-times repeat, because opponents come from somewhere else or there are other items to collect. Insanely good. The checkpoints are well set, sometimes I would rather have fewer. Compared to Dead Space, there are fewer puzzles, but this increases the fun of the game - you can just play through the game and the story without having to constantly run back and forth. This is good for collecting items and still good for weapon and body/suit upgrades though. Its great and exciting and on a level like Dead Space 1, 2, Alien Isolation, Last-Of-Us, Evil Within.

Absolutely agree. This game went well beyond my expectation with modern horror games. Atmosphere and sound is clearly the crown jewel for this game. It drips so well of locations where I was just slowly going into corridors hoping I don’t get attacked. This also leaks into the sound as well and was very intense at times. Combat. Wow, for the first hour or so learning combat was very different then what I am use to but boy once I learned it I was addictive to it. It plays real well into the intense horror trying to survive each encounter. Now there are some things I say may be less admirable such as being attack so much by these little parasite creatures and the ones who attach themselves to you and drag you to some egg. It worked a few times but after the fourth I disliked this so much. Story was decent and left enough to ponder about. Overall this game is really good, solid horror game but after playing the hardest difficulty in the game at launch, I don’t see myself coming back to this title until dlc is launch.

The game does have flaws especially on the horror aspect of it. But people are blaming it on the combat they’re all wrong, the combat in this game is amazing it still needs improvement but the stun baton is a fun mechanic to have, the problem with horror are the enemies, is not scary to have them pop in front of you every time when you can just smash them in the face right away, they need to have bigger sections where they pop randomly out of nowhere or silently stock you leaving small noise identifier that something is changing you. And a two more enemy types would have done, also having some variations of when they mutate to increase tension

I absolutely agree with what you said about Dead space games' similarity to Callisto and how the people who dont get the similarity between dead space and Callisto dislikes the game. a week ago I was thinking about buying the game but I don't want to waste any money so I checked out some game reviews and they all sound the same *"the combat is a chore"* *"the combat is boring"* *"the game is not fun"* and when I saw angry Joe's review of the game i was shocked by his verdict. giving the game a 3/10 and I thought it was ridiculous as hell. And when I checked his review of dead space and learned that he did not play the original dead space, I was like "no wonder why he disliked the Callisto protocol" Heck, even in Critical's Callisto protocol game review he gave the game at least a 60% rating on the moist meter and I was all like screw it. I'll take my chances I'll buy the game. And guess what? I absolutely LOVE the game! I've never had this much fun since dead space and man oh man the graphics and environment and atmosphere is so darn beautiful! Very good video and a lot of great points. Only thing I disagree with is the stealth system - it was just unfinished and clearly added shortly before release. Most of this game's faults are to be blamed on its publisher aka Krafton that pushed the devs for early release. The game could have used another 6-12 months in the oven and it would potentially be a killer. Still I enjoyed it very much and will no doubt buy DLC and a sequel on day1. And I don't know who even trusts reviewers and big content creators when it comes to buying new games nowadays. It's a shitshow.

When you go to a publisher to fund your game you have to give them a deadline to get the game out by or you don’t get to make a game because they’re not giving you any money marketing and distribution of games aint free. And for SURE no publisher would ever greenlight a delay of 6 months after a projected deadline let alone a year especially if it’s not a big name like EA or Capcom that’s in house devs . That is 100% a sure fire way to ensure you never ever find work again and are blacklisted by future publishers especially if you came to THEM with the game, not the other way around. The last thing I need honestly is for this game to have stealth with a million enemies in the room where I’m waiting for 20 hours to be able to get one stealth kill because enemies can hear the kills. That is a sure fire way to get me to uninstall a game. I didn’t like resident evil 8’s dlc or the benevito house for that very reason. It just drags the game down. If I wanted to play outlast, that’s what i would have played.

@@TeryonTheHuman you know people thought I was crazy when I said I didn’t care for the house in RE8. Wasn’t scary and I was over it after 10 min. That said man Callisto I thought was well done story and gameplay wise. Maybe better more diverse death animations and a couple more enemies to change up a little. The melee was awesome as hell. Love you get to protect yourself without a gun compared to other games with the characters 1 arm generic swing.

I believe the sloppy launch for this game may be because the devs knew they needed to get it out before Dead Space Remake. Otherwise, they would risk TCP being completely overshadowed by it. Calisto is awesome, and I can't wait for DSR.

@@starvethebeast6480 dead space having a release date for early 2023 means absolutely nothing here. Callisto Protocol was funded under the condition it would be done before the end of 2022. Which was a deal made before dead space remake was even announced

@TeryonTheHuman you may be right. I'm not claiming to know for sure that my stance is correct. To be clear, in my original comment, I stated that I "believe" the sloppy launch "may" be because bla bla bla. It may or may not be the case in this scenario, but there has been a precedent set in the industry establishing that devs and publishers often plan launches based on the calender releases of triple A titles such as Call Of Duty, because they don't want to risk being overlooked due to the sheer amount of consumer focus on certain titles. Suffice it to say my comment is mere speculation based on industry trends.

@@starvethebeast6480 which is completely understandable on their end. No publisher in their right mind would want to launch in the same window has something like call of duty or battlefield. You know how many great games made the mistake of launching in the same window as a big name IP like that and have gotten absolutely destroyed?

Hopefully it will be , i want the DLC to be of good length and optimized well on all platforms on day one . Glenn seems he takes the feedback to heart , so with the DLC it should be better .

Not to bash Callisto but c'mon, to say it has potential, and "when dlc drops" this is why games like Elden Ring got the overhype that it did. It did what it did ON LAUNCH day. Complete like games should do likes its always done pre ps4 days!
