Good for you. I think you are 100% correct about that M8 sensor. FYI: I just received my Leica M11 Monochrom and thus far loving it. By forcing myself to think Monochrom I’m able to see things I simple did not previously. The M11M gets you a usable 100k ISO. It’s truly an amazing camera. I plan to speak to this point over on my channel if you’re curious.

The ccd sensor on the M8 is the sweet spot between analog photography and digital. The files it produces both in color, and black and white, are in a genre of their own. I did some of my best photography to date with that camera. I’m currently shooting with a Q2M. Great video!

I have owned both the M8 and M9, ultimately settled into the M9 as it's still got much of the CCD magic, no IR issues, the extra 8mp really helps with a mild crop, an extra stop of usable ISO, and no focal conversion. All of that said, the M8 colors are SO unique and the 10mp files are INSANELY sharp. I also truly adored the top led shot counter. The M8 felt like a prototype, it's a weird half working compromise, but that's also part of it's charm.
@JustinPhillip Жыл бұрын
I agree. Recently saw an M9-P that looked awesome. But there is something about this M8. I also like it for a poor mans infrared camera. The results are very interesting with the right filter & conversion.
@kevintrudeau6145 Жыл бұрын
@@JustinPhillip honestly shot without an IRcut, and desaturated, it's the best monochrome M outside of the monochroms, by far.

@@JustinPhillip Hey Justin, your photography is noticeably improving every time you post, every time after you've gone somewhere to photograph with dedication since you've picked up the M8, forcing you to think, not relying on camera capabilities to take the shot. It really shows. The M8 already is an amazing investment into yourself and your skills! Can't wait to see what you'll do with it over the years! Sensor corrosion on the M9 is not exactly the sensor that is corroded, but it is the IR-cut filter on top of it. When you have it replaced (or you do it yourself, like I did) it is not the sensor that is replaced, but just the filter. So you keep the original sensor. I bought it cheap (900€ or 940$), because of the corrosion, ordered a chinese replacement filter. I took of the bad filer and glued on the new one. Now I have an good working M9 for less than 1000$. A good advice: If you DIY, you should be a bit handy :-)

@5:24 I bought the 7Artisans 75mm F/1.25 from you Justin :) I calibrated it using my own tools. It's an awesome lens on my M240 starting at f/1.8ish, not so on the M8, it is too soft until f/4. It is definitely large but I kind of like it. I use it to hold the camera and since the focus ring is a bit stiff it does not de-focus by accident while composing. All in all, I think it is a great lens and renders very nice. Love your videos! Keep up the good work!

Congratulations, you will love that camera! I have owned one 3-4 times already (and might get one again at some point) before switching to M9 and then, eventually, to the M Monochrom. Black and white files are excellent from that sensor, and colours do look like old Kodak. I never bothered with IR filters myself, never thought the lack of them affected my images (plus, i was converting most to B&W anyway). I tend to shoot mostly my MM nowadays, or an RX1 I had converted to monochrome, an M8 would give me color options (I carry a Ricoh GR for that) with M mount. By the way, the sensors in the M9 (and MM) never "corroded"; the issue was with the glue used to attach the cover glass to the sensor, it eventually started to detach when exposed to moisture. At the time Leica replaced it on both my M9P and my MM, no longer an option today. M8's sensor is exempt from that issue.

how is it with the framelines using the 40 summicron-c?

I found its better to jump to the 35 frameline for better accuracy. But that does get annoying having to flip the framelines every time. But at least you can still do that with the M8. The newer Leicas like the M10 & M11 did away with the frame line selector, so may be even a bigger hassle with those, unless you use live view

It is not the M9 sensor that is bad but the sensor glass That is what corrodes. The sensor glass can be replaced leaving the original sensor in place. I have the factory replaced sensor glass plus circuit board. Same great color. Both my M8.2 and M9 do great color. The M240 is close but not quite the same. The M240 can be goosed in post to imitate the M8/M9 colors. The M8 does shine in B&W.

@anthonymiller8979 Жыл бұрын
@@JustinPhillip I have never heard of an M8 sensor corroding and mine was fine. It is the cover glass on the M9 sensor that corrodes as the wrong cover glass was used. The first Leica replacements were just more of the same flawed CCD sensors up until mid 2017. After that Leica used a CCD sensor with the correct cover glass and thy should not corrode. You still get the CCD sensor and look. Kolori Vison can replace the cover glass on these sensor in many cases, again, preserving the CCD sensors.
