A thoroughly and beautifully told summary of what Angel of Darkness could've been. I, among many fans, have been wondering how the trilogy would've turned out, so appreciate the bit of closure there. Hopefully in the future, they bring along some CORE personnel and remake the trilogy, or at least give us the next two games.

Thanks for the shout-out Suzanne! I am just a little bit obsessed with (the story/deep lore of/behind) this game haha so I always have a lot to say about it. It's definitely one of my favorite TRs (always has been and always will be). Not only because of the huge potential of what this game and the trilogy as a whole could have been but also what's already there. I am able to look beyond the controls/movement scheme and the bugs (of which there were not even that many in my version of the game) and see all the positives and improvements that were made (also given that TR had to evolve/innovate in one way or another and move into the next/PS2 era). I really appreciate how ambitious they were with it: ultimately they made something that for the first time really offers the player a lot to think about in terms of the story and the (side) characters/character development (that's very important to me in a video game, or any type of medium really). It's all incredibly intriguing and exciting. As far as I'm concerned, the writer of AOD (Murti Schofield) is a creative genius. It's truly a delight to hear the man talk about his visions behind this game and its larger world. He truly has thought about/developed everything and everyone - it just was challenging to translate it all into the game and so much has been left on the cutting-room floor, it's quite tragic really. To end on a positive note, I can say that I'm happy that he got more recognition the last few years for all the hard work he put in back in the day. Therefore we're now even up to a point he actually creates new material such as the El Hawa story bridging TR4 and AOD, Kurtis' Journal, and soon even a Kurtis prequel if we're lucky, which is just so cool!! Plus, actual AOD sequel novels written by Jenni Milward! So in the end AOD turned out to be a gift that keeps on giving - I love that! 5:57 That's a good alternative theory actually! However, I think the name of the game 'The Angel of Darkness' does not refer to Lara but refers to the Nephilim since they are the overarching villains of the supposed trilogy. The Nephilim are represented by Karel, who is the 'angel' (bringer) of darkness [a dark/black/evil 'angel'] (long) before, during, and even after the events of the game (before and during the game events he works through Eckhardt as a puppet master behind-the-scenes), both on a day-to-day basis as well as in terms of his ultimate goal, i.e. to create a lot more of his kind (using the Sleeper, another Nephilim) to ultimately take over the world. Strictly, the Nephilim are not pure 'angels' but (only) the offspring (hybrid) of angels and humans (i.e. only half-angels), but that's a detail. Thanks for all your hard work on this video and AOD as a whole. Awesome!

No problem! Your comment with all the info on Lara’s backstory really inspired me to look into it in more detail 🥰 I see the greatness in AOD too! I think Murti is indeed a genius and he created such an intriguing and amazing story that has so many places it can go. It’s such a shame how it turned out for these games because they could have been a masterpiece! I’m so glad Murti is still creating and AOD is still going. Maybe some day we’ll get our remake 🥰 Oh that makes sense about Karel being the Angel of Darkness! I never got that before, I always thought that Lara was supposed to be the Angel of Darkness 😂 Thanks so much for watching! I have really enjoyed this series and can’t wait for what’s next 🥰❤️

@@suzannetheraider Your take was also correct, Murti himself stated that "The Angel of Darkness" has a double meaning, one of them being Lara's darker tone and her experiences.

Long over due thank you for this video. As someone who has been a die hard extreme above and beyond of thinking fan, this answered alot of questions my original mind as of 10 years old and currently 31 of questions of the trilogy has been answered that I thank you for finding out and gathering your information of and I thank you for taking the time to share this. I am someone with a passion for very few video games that stuck out to me to be someone that avoids hearing what other people feel, etc, but something about your video triggered me to decide to see what you're all about. I saw this yesterday and have been thinking about it since and it's amazing how this is officially Canon and overall what the trilogy would have consist of. I am an OG classic TR preferred fan over Enix version of lara and it really does sadden me how much potential this game had/has and probably more than likely would be the best tr outta the franchise that I dream and hope someday would continue.

Great video Suzanne. So much info to have made AOD an epic and different game from the previous games. We can only think what could have been. If AOD is remade and let's face it from the control point it would be just the start of something fantastic. There's plenty enough to go on and maybe some new ideas to produce the AOD that should have been done.😊👍

What a great summary, thank you for this video, as someone who's been an AoD fan since literal childhood, I enjoyed every second of it. I've already read some of the stuff you mentioned, like about Morgau's character, but you provided lots of background information and structured it very nicely so it didn't feel exhausting to rummage through all that, because you already did that for us :D I'm a little torn on the matter of AoD. On the one hand, I absolutely loved the game despite its flaws and I always wished to see a remaster of it - a complete version of the game and its story, including everything we've heard has been cut. On the other hand, I really enjoyed Legend and we wouldn't have gotten it if Core had continued Tomb Raider instead of Crystal. But honestly, I think I'd be happier with the full AoD experience. I'd give up on Legend for that, I'd gladly take the three AoD games and all the Kurtis spin-offs! They really sounded amazing! And like a more cohesive, more unique story than what we got after Legend (I never liked how they only remade Anniversary so they could put Natla in Underworld - felt cheap to me) So anyway, I'll stop my rambling here. I've subscribed to your channel and thanks for this video 🤍

I got so stressed and confused a few times trying to do the research, but I’m happy that I did because I’d never known any of these stories before ☺️ I know exactly what you mean. I too wish we had gotten Angel of Darkness finished properly and all these other games, but I do also love legend. I wish I could have both 😂😂😂 I think AOD deserves a remake of the trilogy in the future. I don’t know if I can start a petition or something? 😅 I love Legend and Underworld, but I honestly hate Anniversary. I think it’s so bland compared to the original, and we didn’t need it. I agree, using it as a way to just bring Natla back felt cheap and pointless. I would have preferred a remake or AOD any day. We deserve a remake of AOD! Thanks so much for watching! I’m looking forward to all the games coming up 🥰

WOW i've been at least a little obsessed with this game for more than 20 years now and never thought the lore was gonna get any further explanation, let alone something canon. Like you mentioning that man in bouchard's room reminded me of how many bizarre, fascinating and entirely unexplained things were in this game, but it really did feel like the elements were connected in a way that made me kind of obsessed with it even tho it was so clearly not getting any sequels. i've been checking for updates on its background every so often. i've been such a fan of its freaky goth y2k aesthetic, alchemy/magic and body horror along with the beautiful environments, dank liminal spaces, the inadvertent surrealism of its endless glitches and the strangeness of all the characters and the ways they interact.

Wow!! thank you Suzanne!! there was a ton of info there.. I noticed your notebook is almost out 😂 AOD gave it a run for its money 😆 I really liked how you organized and presented it ❤ I can see how people would be intrigued to actually get these games and play them. There are some really cool stuff there for sure. There are two points I would like to touch on. One is the Lara living and being accepted fully in the tribe part. I think it's the type of situation that really requires super high levels of respectful and tactful approach. Not sure if they would pull that off to be honest. It gives a bit of exoticism that I am not fully comfortable with, because these types of stories put a ""westerner"" at the centre of the story of swooping in and just fully appropriating / taking advantage of their ""secrets"" . But of course we never know how they would execute it, and since this a fictional tribe, maybe it'd be okayish (it's always the real life parallels though that make these scenarios uncomfortable, but I digress). Second is the special family line thing.. I am afraid I would not be a fan of that at all personally. I think Lara already has a quite special background and I love her essence of a super determined and skilled human. It is inspiring. It already is sort of superhuman ( idealistic, heroic) but not like metaphysical. I think giving her a ""magical"" family line and all that would remove from her essence. Not too mention, extreeemely elitist!! I am sorry, all heroes and important people belong to one family line??? and all the rest of us.. the basic trash 🤣🤣 get to be inspired by their stories?? umm.. NO 😆 but I will hold off from going full breadtube here 😅😂 Also if she now had ""far see"" and telekinesis in the later games, I would be like, sorry.. this is no longer tomb raider. It's something completely different. Maybe they could have just kept all that for the Kurtis games and therefore have enough to differentiate them. The important thing remains though .. you did an awesome job here and I loved this video 🥰 (didn't want to end my wall of text with complaints 😅😅)
@suzannetheraider
@suzannetheraider Жыл бұрын
Haha my notebook is well and truly full at this stage 😂 I need to get a new one for Legend 😅 Thank you! It was fun to find out what could have been 🥰❤️❤️❤️ I didn’t think about her joining the tribe in that way, but it could certainly be a point to make and maybe a plot that would need to handled really delicately. I Would hope that if they’d explored it it would have been done in a respectful way. And I totally get your point about the special family line part. I thought it sounded cool but maybe it does take away what makes Lara special? I felt the same about Live action Mulan. I didn’t like that movie and the main reason why was because I felt they took away the core of her character. She’s not strong or skilled or anything like that in the Disney film. She struggles so much when she first joins the army. What makes her special is her determination and her intelligence. She uses those things to become the best soldier in China. In the movie, they made her have chi, basically super powers. She had nothing to overcome and she wasnt relatable anymore. I guess it could absolutely be the same with Lara. Maybe what makes her so special is that she’s a normal woman who can do extraordinary things. I get why that aspect could take away from her a bit! Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed this video! Thanks for making the suggestion 🥰❤️❤️❤️

Shows you what happened after she got stuck in the Tomb. These are OFFICIAL NOVELS. She didnt climb out. Someone saved her. But betrayed her later on. If you read the Official Licensed Novels between games. Especially Amulet of Power. ), The Lost Cult, And, The Man of Bronze. The fourth book I forgot the title of, but it's around Chronicles. Costed a lot of money for that one. Once I find it I'll tell you the name. You should totally read those. They are awesome and are good filler for between games ❤️

I have just found an excellent (more-or-less?) complete summary of the entire backstory of AOD from the very beginning/beginning of time to the end of the game (buried deep on TombRaiderForums), which I'll post below for archiving purposes (and because KZbin does not like me posting links). It also provides some more context for what is said/described rather quickly or only alluded to in the game. During the biblical times angelic guides known as watchers walked among the man. Some of these beings of light got cursed for teaching humans the forbidden arts of magic and alchemy. They fell from grace and their light got removed from their bodies. These beings then were filled with Lust and mated with the human women. Because they couldn't procreate among themselves. As a result Nephilim were born. Cursed angel and human hybrids. Together they corrupted the earth. As punishment for their crimes, archangel Uriel was ordered to destroy them with a flood. Only a small number of the Nephilim survived.During the 14th century they realized that they needed help and contacted Pieter Von Eckhartd the black alchemist in Cappadoccia. He moved to Prague and collected alchemical elements from human bodies to create the sanglyph over the course of 100 years. A powerful alchemical decive that can re-arrange the atoms. But Nephilim underestimated the madness and greed of Eckhardt. Eckhardt betrayed his Nephilim masters the same way he betrayed his fellow Cabal members not so long ago. Previously he had killed all the bright and powerful Cabal members to control their secrets and replaced them with not so bright power hungry sorcerers and alchemists. Nephilim were not the only ones, after Eckhardt however. An 11th century inner order of the knights templar, were also after them. This order was called Lux Veritatis, they were trained to deal with sorcerers and black arts. They looted the underground cities in Cappadoccia and found the 3 crystal shards, while Eckhard was trying to revive one of the 3 Nephilims sleepers that survived the flood. Knowing that his capture was imminent Eckhard split the sanglyph into 5 parts after finishing it. He magically hid them inside paintings, and called them the Sanglyph paintings. Nephilim eventually captured Eckhardt and imprisoned him in a Hell like pit in Germany. But it was Lux Veritatis that stabbed him with the 3 crystal shards. Before Nephilim could save one of the Sleepers, Lux veritatis destroyed it however. They built a castle on top of the pit where Eckhardt was imprisoned and guarded it. They captured the paintings and a member of the Lux Veritatis painted them over with religious imagery. This member was known Brother Obscura, he gave his name to the paintings. The paintings then were known as the obscura paintings, instead of the sanglyph paintings. Lux veritatis members hid the paintings throughout their strongholds in Europe. Brother Obscura also made secret engravings of the paintings that acted as a map to these secret locations. He also hid these engravings. For the next 500 year Eckhardt remained imprisoned, and Lux Veritatis fought with the remaining Cabal members. In 1945 Cabal members manipulated the course of the World War II, allied forces bombed the castle and freed Eckhardt. he captured one of the periapt shards and left the castle. Things took a turn for the worst in the next decade; Cabal was strong again. They eventually killed the Kurtis' grandfather, his descandents lived their life on the run, until they were all killed one by one. Kurtis left his family business after several disagreements with his father and joined the French Foreign Legion. His father got killed shortly before the events of Tomb Raider Angel Of Darkness. With his father's death Kurtis took this as his wake up call and took two of the periapt shards and his chigurai weapon from his mother and went after the Eckhardt, who was causing the monstrum killings in Paris at the time. A series of bizarre killings which leaves metallic eruptions on the victims bodies, and a ritualistic blood grafitti on the walls. This time around Eckhardt was trying to find and revive the second Sleeper. After experimenting with the Nephilim DNA from the dead Nephilim body parts he realized that he needs the real Nephilim Sleeper. He started seeing his Cabal comrades as expandables yet again, he looked down the experiments of Kristina Boaz and Grant Muller as useless. With the help of Luther Rouzic he collected all the engravings and the 3 obscura paintings. They contacted Werner Von Croy to discover the 4th painting. Werner did his own research on the engraving and contacted Vasiley and Margot Carvier. Vasiley had all the engravings but only sent 4 of them and wanted more money for the fifth one. Werner and Margot Carvier decoded the 4th engraving and discovered that the 4th obscura painting was under the former Louvre Castle, a Lux Veritatis Vault. They started the archeological dig under the Louvre and Werner started to realize the dangers of the Tomb beneath the museum. She desperatly tried to contact Lara Croft to help him out. He came to realize that Eckhardt was the shape-shifting Nephilim race had something to do with the paintings, concluded that monstum killings and his quest for the paintings were in fact related. Somehow they also realized that sanglyph parts inside the paintings showed up under X-ray. Lara finally agreed to visit Werner in his apartment in Paris, Karel disguised as Eckhardt murdered Werner, after he learned so much and knocked out Lara Croft. Margot Carvier and Vasiley also got murdered under mysterious circumstances, shortly after Werner's death. Lara eventually, met Kurtis and they worked together to stop Eckhardt and the Cabal. In the meantime Eckhardt finally discovered the Sleeper and moved it to his base in Prague. Lara used the crystal shards to kill Eckhardt, but in the end it was Karel that killed Eckhardt. The original Nephilim he met centuries ago in ancient Cappadoccia, he didn't want to trust Eckhardt after what happened back in the 15th century. He looked at him as loose end that needed tidying up. Lara grabbed Eckhardt glove and the Sanglyph, she used it to repel Karel's attacks and finally destroyed the second Sleeper. According to the developers Karel survived his encounter with Lara, and continued to revive the Nephilim race. It was rumoured that he went to the Cappadoccia to revive the final Sleeper with the Sanglyph he obtained from the wreckage.Unlike Eckhardt he actually looked at Boaz as a valuable member of the team. Perhaps he knew that DNA experiments were needed to fully resurrect the Nephilim race, since they couldn't procreate on their own.

AOD is the best version of Lara Croft in the entire franchise. Such a shame that we never got the sequels.

Tbh, as sad as it is that these games never happened... I'm kinda happy it ended where it did. This story just doesn't sound like Tomb Raider at all, and I feel like fans probably would've just ended up complaining that they miss the simpler stories of the original games and, yknow... actually raiding tombs 😂 Instead of fighting off weird sci-fi genetic experiments for three games in a row. I think Crystal Dynamics taking it back to basics with Legend was ultimately a good thing for the franchise.

The first Angel of Darkness game was released with so many issues and bugs and it got such bed reviews that the rest of the trilogy was cancelled 😞💔

It's adorable that they thought anyone on mass would have wanted a Curtis spin-off game. I get that the greedy publisher, over-worked them to the point that they loathed Lara, understandable. Audiences however, will always want quality Lara Croft content. Replacing iconic with generic would have killed the studio, if AoD didn't.

Ye I’m not sure how successful a Kurtis spin off would have been, but if they’d included Lara in it and made a really good game it could have been ok I think. I guess we’ll never know 😞

Sounds like they wanted to link Lara to the African tribe genetically. There's an obvious link between the tribe being wiped out and the Lux. I can imagine why they didn't want to finish this story.

i know that TR community likes to talk about this game a lot and what could have been etc. but we should now forget about the game we got. Unfinished, bugged, not very tomb raider-y, more rpg than puzzle - platform. i know that is edios fault so f them but still. aod is a mess

The ending of Eindos Lara was bitter sweet, I don't like the game at all or the story but classic Lara was a woman I looked up to as a baby, they began ruining her in the soft reboot by giving her daddy issues, having her make a whole scene about her killing Larson in tr Anniversary while in the original she would gladly get rid of you for turning against her and in the full reboot she turned so unrecognizable and whiny. It's a true hassle. Classic Lara probably had daddy issues too because she got disowned by him for not wanting to marry but it never bothered her. As long as she can travel she was happy.

Classic Lara is always my favourite and someone I look up to too 🥰 I thought the inclusion of her backstory in the soft reboot was ok and added a bit of depth to her, but in the reboot it was way too much and she was very whiny 😂 You make such a good point! Being disowned by her parents must have been so tough but classic Lara never let it get her down or define her. She truly was a strong and inspirational woman ☺️❤️

I tomb raider legend, at the ending, Lara wasn't crying for her dad but her mother. I agree with you. I understand they tried to make prequels, but her attitude wasn't how she was originally. She was a strong, free spirited, independent women, who didn't need a man, didn't care about getting married, her love was traveling and discovering artifacts.

@@Butterflywings011 Correct but in legend there was hint that she resented her father Alistair said something about him and Lara said " But it wasn't bloody love now wasn't it?" I agree with what you said about Classic Lara being a great character.

@@suzannetheraider Personally I think having her playing for sport and the introduction in the tiny bio was enough debt in my opinion, at times less is better. It left a lot to the imagination of the player, Lara being mysterious is what kept gamers interested for years. Yes and I agree with what you said about Classic Lara. She's a strong woman and that she just want to be a treasure hunter than be in England living a simple life.

I don’t mind a spin off game if they make him handsome and mysterious with an actual personality. I’ve seen a cool real life looking Kurtis on Art station by Tavasa. I wish I could share the link but KZbin automatically deletes your comment.

Ye I always thought that Kurtis needed to be a lot cooler with more personality to keep up with Lara. He’s very bland in AOD but I guess he was unfinished so maybe they would have made him great in the spin off? ☺️
