This was one of my favorite seasons of the 90s, even though I'm a fan of offense and not soccer scores. I loved how Palffy, Bure, and Selanne all scored for weak teams. My favorite line from the 98-99 Hockey Scouting Guide was the opening of Bure's profile following that 51-goal, 90-point performance: "Get me out of here!" Ouch.

Imagine how hockey history would've been different had the Wings let go of Scotty Bowman & hired Mike Keenan to take over as coach/GM!! Keenan was rumored to be offered the job while the Rangers were in the middle of their Cup run in 1994, it also complicated matters because he was still under contract to the the Rangers. Had that happen the Wings would still be looking for their 1st Cup since 1955.

I've said it elsewhere, but Kolzig deserved the Conn Smythe that year, not Yzerman. Without Kolzig, the Caps are out in the first round. The Red Wings still had a strong team without Yzerman. Down the stretch, the Caps signed Bellows and traded for Tikkanen and also for Jeff Brown. This was probably the best group of stretch drive deals in Caps history. Tik got criticized for the empty net he missed in game 2. I don't blame him for losing that game as they were up something like 2 goals when he missed it, but the Wings regrouped and won. I thought Tik helped them down the stretch in the regular season and make the playoffs.
@matthewdaley7465 жыл бұрын
I think a losing player will only get the Conn Smythe Trophy if the Final goes to a Game Seven.
@sdgakatbk5 жыл бұрын
@@matthewdaley746 Probably true today though in 1968 Glenn Hall won it with St. Louis though they were swept by the Habs in the Finals. Hextall deservedly won it for the losing Flyers in '87 and that was a 4-3 Final. While the 87 Oilers had the most points that year with 106, the Flyers were 2nd with 100 so in terms of the regular season, there wasn't that much difference between the two clubs. However if I remember correctly, the Flyers were pretty banged up in the playoffs that year. Comparing the '99 Sabres who lost the Finals to Dallas with the '98 Caps, Buffalo had 91 points while the '98 Caps had 92 points. In terms of regular season points of the playoff opponents, the '99 Sabres faced tougher opponents than the '98 Caps did. Also Hasek did get them to game 6 when the bad call allowed the Hull goal ending the series in 6. So it would seem Hasek had a stronger case for the Conn Smythe in '99 than Kolzig did in '98 but it was won by Joe Nieuwendyk in '99.
@matthewdaley7465 жыл бұрын
@@sdgakatbk They weren't going to win Game Seven anyway, and, considering how he not only ran off Ted Nolan, but, that the Sabres LET HIM DO IT losing was karmic. Lindy Ruff got his job because 24 players were usurped by 1. Today there are four rounds of Playoffs so it's even harder for a losing player to win. I still have no idea why NO ONE stood up for Ted Nolan. If they were afraid Hasek would leave, the joke was on them, because he left anyway.
