I feel for the German, Swiss and Austrian car cleaning, enthusiast and detailers . I can't imagine not been able to clean my own car at home😢

I know. Although I fully support the environmental protection angle, I would hate not being able to just crack on at home. We are lucky in the 🇬🇧 I think.

Without a doubt. I guess I look towards the manufacturers to ensure that they only use biodegradable/safe chemicals. If that's possible?

I m extremely torn when it comes to this topic and the more I think of it, the less I m in favour of the prohibition of washing your car at home, a policy "we" actually adopted. My final verdict goes against my gut feeling which favoured such a ban. And that despite having watched many vids from the UK or the US where the degree of carelessness in regards to the products used regardless of terrain/surroundings left me either speechless or enraged reinforcing that feeling. Yet, I d say "our" ban on washing cars at home actually doesn t really address two core issues intended with that ban. It neither makes ppl more aware of the potentially harmful ingredients in the products they buy (you can see huge differences there and you d want consumers to buy the less harmful ones- just compare Fusso F7 vs Sonax Netshield s data sheet) as it shifts all the moral obligations to the owners of wash boxes making most end users feel like it s not their problem anymore, nor does it encourage companies to make greater use of more environmentally friendly chemicals/ techniques or the development of such (I think this one is the biggie). Instead, the ban bets on a more centralized use being less harmful to the detriment of everything else. Placing all the burden to wash box owners in the hope that they have properly working facilities in place to deal with those chemicals (having talked to two owners, I can tell you that they actually can t guarantee that and the water ends up getting dumped into the sewage system of the community) whilst giving consumers and even more so manufacturers of these chemicals a free pass. I d argue that regulating the manufacturers regarding the impact of their product s ingredients would be more beneficial. This step is also likely to increase public awareness of the issue at hand...this sense seems to be already more/fairly developed in continental Europe though. I feel like it s very cheap to address issues with global bans like this and I get that it s a trade off but as of now, despite that policy in place, we don t really have less of the harmful chemicals in the system and we don t encourage manufacturers to reduce them, we just bet on the fact that it ll be overall less harmful to use them at x place BUT we don t reduce their production or give incentives to a lesser use. Regarding your pity: yes, such bans very much limit and restrain you as a user, it all becomes much more of a hassle (which probably was also intended in order to limit the amount of chemicals used by individuals but still, there s chemicals in use, even harsher ones needed in automated car washes in order to make the system work in a shorter period of time) and it requires more planning and workarounds that are sometimes also detrimental (I know ppl driving 20min to the nearest wash box one way) and you gotta become really efficient in getting all the things done in a limited time frame depending on the owner s discretion...that really sucks tbh...but that s a story for another time.

@@AndreasSchwarzinger@michaelbutler4219 Hi there , that's a good point , although I understood from the podcast they also fear the contaminants from the car itself getting washed down to soil? Nevertheless, biodegradability of products from my POV needs a massive review. I am doing a bit of research in this topic and my understanding is that every manufacturer just needs to follow 20 years old EU legislation, which defines different levels of biodegradability and does not look at whether the substances into which the product degrades are toxic or natural (not toxic). That is my understanding at the moment. Any good sources of information for this Andreas? I think it's a bit too specific. Thanks
