Listen and learn as famed phonetician Daniel Jones narrates the 18 Cardinal Vowels.
These phonetic reference points are necessary to master the IPA vowel system.
Because you probably woke up this morning saying "Hey, I should probably master the IPA vowel system."

Thank you for this upload. Not only are these recordings of enormous historical importance but they also mean a great deal to me. In the late 70s, during my training as a linguist, I studied under a disciple of Professor Jones: These recordings were mandatory practice material for ear training from day one of her phonology course.

What people don't seem to understand is that, in these recordings, Daniel Jones is NOT pronouncing vowels that are part of the catalogue of any language. The cardinal vowels are theoretical reference points that linguists use to formulate the description of actual vowels.

Well, I speak Hungarian, which also has an [y]-type vowel. I studied French for a few years with a native instructor, and I think there is no difference between French [y] and Hungarian [y]. However, I think neither of them are identical to the cardinal [y] sound. In my opinion, it is not that his pronunciation was not perfect, and this is why it differed from your French [y], but because French [y] differs from the cardinal sound.

The cardinal vowels are not the vowels of any given language, but a reference points for phonologists to compare vowels. So, no vowels of any of the world's languages are the cardinal vowels, but they can approach the quality of cardinals.

This is very useful and thanks for posting Although it is a work of serious scholarship it also contains a lot of unintentional humour. The bit when he pronounces them on a rising intonation has not been included and it is side - splittingly funny. It sounds like a sheep bleating.

These vowels actually don't exist in any language. Cardinal vowels are a system of measurement used by phoneticians to classify and compare vowels from different languages. They "fence in" the area of the mouth where vowels are articulated. Though you have to keep practicing them to make sure you don't forget them. A bit of a pain.
@josefk5659
@josefk5659 3 жыл бұрын
They certainly exist but you're right in stating that they aren't precise and take place in a general area of the mouth.

The only reason I mentionned French is because like the Germans or Finns, we have this cardinal [y], which anglophones don't. His pronounciation of the [y] is almost perfect, but I just had to mention it was not as perfect as his pronounciation of the other vowels I know from my mother tongue [œ], [ɔ], [ø]. Since [y] is a close front rounded vowel, it should be just a little more "closed". That's all... :)

I would dispute, based on the little Italian I heard, that Italian /ɔ/ would be cardinal. I percieve it as being decidedly opener than C [ɔ]. (Or maybe it's more centralized)

Andreas Berg It is. It's just that we're not accustomed to this sound, because in well-known languages that have an y-like vowel (e.g. French, German, Hungarian), the y differs significantly from that heard here (it is retracted). Interesting quote from Gimson's 'An Introduction to the Pronunciation of English': " [about the pronunciation of English lowered-retracted i as in 'it'] [A] [y] sound, as in French 'but', said with relaxed spread lips, will come near to the English [retracted lowered high-front vowel]. It is implicit in this that French etc. y is not cardinal. The real cardinal y can be arrived at by rounding the lips and pronouncing a fully front _cardinal_ i.
