My favorite player as well and as a Boston fan I loved that he killed the Habs. But, at the same time, I loved that he did things like bring Ron Tugnutt out to the ice to take a bow after that famous game. That was the Nordiques of course. I was at the game, but the Habs connection comes in with LaFleur. The Garden gave Guy a standing O when he got a point (assist), and shouted "GUUUYYYYYY!" when he had the puck. Wasn't a taunt, we knew he was an all time great and it would be the last time we saw him play. I gave Guy LaFleur a standing ovation at the Boston Garden. What a night.

This trade still haunts Vancouver fans. Almost every time someone brings up trading Jake Virtanen on the fan boards, there is a response within minutes that's something like "Remember Cam Neely!!!"
@TheHockeyGuy
@TheHockeyGuy 3 жыл бұрын
I don't remember Neely having the off ice issues that Jake has had. Neely was a great guy and a leader. I have compared them myself, but Jake isn't going to have a Neely career if they trade him. Jake might be a 25 goal scorer and a gritty type guy, but I don't see a superstar.

@@TheHockeyGuy oh for sure JV isn't in the same building as Neely, in pretty much any regards. I was just saying the Vancouver fans are now hyper aware of the dangers of trading someone that might come back to haunt them. Funny enough, I used to play ball hockey and played against Barry Pederson's younger brother over in Naniamo once. He was uber skilled, but even at that level the average sized Dman could rag-doll him.

Neely got 55 goals in the 89-90 season. Craig Janney played 55 games that season. If Janney played the full 80 Neely would have easily gotten 60 goals.

I coincidentally sat behind Janney's folks at a game in then old Garden once. They drove up to see their son play. I was wearing a Team USA sweater that night because of their son, and Janney's folks and I ended up talking for most of the second intermission. I suppose I could have gotten my sweater signed that night, but I was never into that. I like Janney a lot, he had a lot of potential that unfortunately he never got to realize but on the other hand, he played for his country and made it to the NHL, both of which kids dream about.

The year after Oates came in late in the season was when Cam only scored 9 goals in 9 games. Oates went insane. Scored 45 goals and 97 assists without Neely in the lineup. That was a crazy year for scoring. Oates had 142 points. I think Doug Gilmour had 127 points for Toronto. 93-94 was really the only year Oates and Neely got to play much together cause Oates was hurt too the next season.

Great stuff, thank you. Loved your post on Eric Lindros as well, another great power forward taken from the game too soon. Point of fact: according to Cam, the condition in his leg and hip was not caused by the famous hit from Ulf to Cam. It was caused when Cam went to hit Ulf, and Ulf moved, which caused Cam to strike his leg in an awkward way which led to his rare degenerative condition. You can confirm this by noting that Ulf’s hit was to Cam’s right leg, while Cam’s injury was to his left knee and thigh. While Ulf’s hit on Cam was dirty and he’d done it a number of times before, I’m not sure why Bruins fans keep saying that Ulf’s hit caused that injury. It is fun to dump on Ulf, but it isn’t true that he ended Cam’s career on that open ice check. I don’t know if footage exists of the actual play that injured him.

I think Samuelsson's playing "style" sure didn't help things, also it was a few years down the road till ANYONE found out about the direct cause of the injury..... Then year's of seeing Samuelsson playing hockey, while Bruin's fan's got to see Neely REHABBING.... That was Fkng' SICKENING, knowing that guy was playing, and Neely wasn't.....Seeing him come into Boston with a Great (Cocky)Pittsburgh team Over, and Over, with his "PLAYING STYLE", while arguably your best player is in the Press Box, that is what is etched Into Bruins fan's heads, sorry, but No Matter how much of a conscientious Hockey fan you are I believe that situation is going to Die Hard friend. P.S. Also remember there was half as much media then as there is now, so people weren't getting the facts pounded into them as they do now, when someone heard, and saw something then it was going to take much longer for that initial moment to be corrected/washed away.

Even Wayne Gretzky says that Cam’s 50goals in 50games should be in the NHL record books, but it won’t because of his knee surgery the previous season. And because of that he started season a bit later than the start of everyone else.

Interesting Neely's first three years were ok, and he becomes a HOFer. Jimmy Carson's first three years are awesome, 37, 55, and 49 goals, two 100 point seasons, the 2nd teenager to score 50 goals, I believe the 1st or 2nd American to score 50 goals. You would have thought Carson is a sure fire HOFer! Always was a fan of Adam Oates. But, seeing him play on TV or the few times he came to LA, you could see how great of a passer he was. But, then he is on the Ducks, and damn, he's older and nearing retirement, but still making amazing passes.

I have read some things, not necessarily here, about how Gordie Howe did all these things before Neely, and better. He was the 'power forward' Neely later fit the type for, etc. Well firstly, Howe did most things before most living hockey players and did them insanely better. When Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky both say the best player ever was Gordie Howe, well, that is saying a lot. But second and most important, Howe was a physical freak. His body was a thing that seemed custom made to play ice hockey. To do what Howe did you first had to have that strange leg to trunk ratio and _then_ have his skills and toughness and vision and hands. So he can't be a 'prototype' power forward. He was, is. and always will be a player not repeated, that why he is a hockey God. Neely's combination of size strength vision and hands proved the _formula_ for his style of play was correct and very effective and that all teams should strive to have that kind of player.

the trade tree is ridiculously long. more so on the pederson side, actually. luongo's in it, so vancouver fans can be happy. i always hated neely, but i'm a habs fan. for some reason, he always had roy's number, and it irritated the shit out of me.
