As an Avs fan who remembers that awful night, I will also say Crawford was reprehensible. Marc Crawford was just as responsible for how emotions built on that night as Brad May and Todd Bertuzzi. How Crawford has escaped the condemnation that followed Bertuzzi is beyond me. And I appreciated Crawford when he took the Avs to their first cup. But not turning the temperature down when things were already simmering was Crawford's responsibility. I will never forgive that from a coach.

I was a young kid in early 2000's, and Bertuzzi was the reason I wanted anything to do with hockey. Absolute heartbreak after that. He was my hero, and ho boy had a fall from grace

I remember him as a Wings fan, alongside Schneider, jumping ship to the Ducks after their cup run and missed out on the Wings cup run in 07-08.

I watched the Steve Moore incident in a pub in North Vancouver. The place went silent. Awful moment in hockey history. Everyone knew something was going to happen. NHL should have stepped up to suspend Steve Moore for the head shot & concussion on Naslund. There were calls for the NHL to protect the super stars or vulnerable players -but it fell on deaf ears. At the time, Naslund was leading the NHL in points. Steve Moore's concussion to Naslund put the Canucks' season/playoffs in jeopardy. Then Bertuzzi put Moore's life and career in jeopardy. The NHL should never have let this happen. Cancuks should never have escalated the situation. Hopefully, we never see this kind of tragedy again. Bertuzzi was never the same player - and even Naslund - after this incident. And Steve Moore never played a professional hockey game again. Lowest NHL moment I've ever watched live on TV.

And it was even lower for the NHL. Bertuzzi ended up having a 20 game suspension after all was said and done. Compare that to what happened and what the sanctions were in the NBA around the same time with The Malice at the Palace. Bertuzzi should have been banned for life.

What upsets me about the Bertuzzi incident, is that the NHL got full-credit for giving him a lifetime ban, and then that got turned into 20 games. WTF.

My thoughts... Steve Moore should have been penalized and suspended for the hit on Naslund. Did Brad May get suspended for saying "There's definitely a bounty on his head..."? If not, he should have been. Some of the things other players said before that game should have put the NHL on high alert and they should have been more responsible as a league handing out fines and suspensions. Bertuzzi's actions were criminal and he should have been suspended for more games (if not outright banned from the NHL). At that point in the game, Moore should not have been on the ice. Maybe they thought that after the Cooke fight it was over, but since Moore won that fight they should have known that Vancouver had not gotten their pound of flesh yet and would still be out for it. Finally, the on ice referees should have been suspended. They had plenty of time during the play, going on, that led to the Bertuzzi actions to blow the whistle and hand out misconducts. They failed in their duties. The entire series of incidents sickens me.

I remember going to a Canucks game with my youth hockey team and during the warmup he looked at me dead in the eyes, pointed to me, tossed a puck over the glass and my jerkoff teammates pushed me out of the way to get it. He was pissed so he told everyone to back the hell off, flipped another puck over, I caught it and he gave me a big smile and a wink, then bagged 2 goals including the game winner. Loved Bert for life after that and I still have the puck to this day.

There was a few things not normally mentioned that helped lead into the Moore tragedy - non-suspension on Moore for the hit on Naslund - Bettman purposely attending the next Avs-Nucks game, forcing both teams to play nice and allowing tempers to simmer for longer. - granato not benching Moore during the blowout to protect him when it was clear Canucks was after blood. I've watched enough hockey too remember people doing the opposite of what I listed to help diffuse hostile situations.

He was an elite power forward for about 5-6yrs. Boy, was the West Coast Express fun to watch. Btw, we could not win a Stanley Cup playing the style we played during that era. We were a high octane run-and-gun team that played little to no defense. I don't think Cloutier should be fully blamed for our lack of playoff success...

Bertuzzi single handedly changed the interference rules in front of the net, by initializing the hit on defencemen to make space for himself. Against Minnesota in the playoffs the Canucks got burned because they kept moving out of position to try to make big hits. After he signed that big 5X5 contract he started floating to the point where fans were losing their minds. You'd see him leave the bench, do a little skate, and then slowly skate back to the bench; while fans were screaming at him for being lazy.

Just to add some details for other viewers. Bertuzzi ended up having to pay an undisclosed settlement to Steve Moore for the criminal case. And I remember Brian Burke at the time as a Anaheim Ducks GM and former GM of Canucks, signed Bertuzzi for 1 year 4 million or 2 year 8 million I forgot. But to me it was a sign that Burke got Bertuzzi’s back and it was a way to help Bertuzzi get back on his feet after the settlement with Moore. Which I find it nice of Burke. Also fun fact a lot of Bertuzzi’s injuries are herniated disc related. He had like back pains and stuff. Herniated discs are no joke.

The Canucks handled the buildup to the Moore incident terribly, but Moore should have served a suspension. When their fans actually held a rally in GM Place (as it was called then) parking lot in support of Bertuzzi, I lost all respect for that team and their fans, and it's never returned.

I had the weird experience watching him play for my wings in the second half of his career. It always seemed to me that he did hold back whenever there was a scrum. But maybe not. He benefited from playing with the likes of Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Maybe more games suspended would have given it a different feel. Not sure.

No, he definitely held back. His play as a power forward was much more mature, and definitely more reserved when he was with the Wings. He was a good locker room guy too then, and finally got his attitude straightened out as a Red Wing. It was a long time coming, but I think he got his redemption. There were years though before where he was a selfish, gross man who really couldn't admit the harm he caused because he was so focused on how his own career was damaged.

I was at the remembrance event/game with Bertuzzi on the ice last year or the previous year, he was cheered in Vancouver. I think its positive memories around him still in Vancouver. I have Avs fans in Colorado and they don't seem to take it as hard as Avs fans outside of Colorado.

What Bertuzzi did to Moore was inexcusable. If it were off the ice, he’d have been in jail. His crocodile tears and half-hazard apology afterward never had me fooled. If he really was sorry, he’d have at least donated to help Steve Moore pay for the treatments after the injury. Bertuzzi never should’ve been reinstated after that incident.

I remember that game vividly. I was 7 years old, my dad knew something bad was about to happen when the Canucks went down big time in the first. He sent me to bed, but from my doorway i could down the hall to the TV. Being from Vancouver of course the Canucks were my team and Bertuzzi my favourite player. The only poster I had in my room was his poster, he was a hero for me as a child. It took me some time to come to terms with how this man I idolized could do something so brutal-especially having watched it live. 20 years later I still feel a little betrayed. After that game I disavowed my allegiance to the Canucks and Bertuzzi and started idolizing the Flames and Iginla, that's the gravity that it had on me.

As someone who coached hockey in Sudbury and coached a team who played against one of Todd's teams when he was on the verge of "stardom" I have a different view of him. He and his family were a group of obnoxious and overbearing a-holes who cared about no one other than Todd. He was a dirty player back then and when one of my players cleanly hit him, his father raced to the dressing room area to "let me know" who Todd was and how dare I send one of my goons to try and hurt him. I am not surprised the Steve Moore incident happened. That is who Todd is. I hated the day he was drafted by the Islanders and I was ready to throw a party when they traded him.

i remember the HBO 24/7 special between the Red Wings and the Maple Leafs, and one of the glaring omissions was anything related to Todd Bertuzzi. the series was arguably getting stale at that point after the excitement of the initial installment between Pittsburgh and Washington, and i think the fact that Bertuzzi got like three seconds of airtime kinda cemented the fact that show wasn't what it was anymore.

Thanks for the videos! I have to tell a story, as silly as it may be. During the season where Auld was starting, and we are at a bar watching the PPV game. It was another Canucks loss. The network allowed you to text in a comment, and it just may come up on the screen. My friends texted in something stupid, something about vaggies which didn't come up. My brother was a (tall) goalie, and loves gear and the goalie swag. He always mentioned Luongo and how awesome he thought he was. So, I texted in: "Hey Nonis, trade Jovo for Luongo." I saw it come up on the screen. Possible management saw it come up. Therefore I am responsible for Lu coming to Vancouver. 😅

I’m not convinced Steve Moore is as injured as he says he was. Even Joe Sakic hung around with Bertuzzi after the incident when it was in the courts. Brad May said the negotiations behind the scenes were ‘greasy’.

In the early 2000's The Hockey News ran an article profiling both Bertuzzi and Iginla: who will go down as the best Power Forward of their era? They slanted it pretty heavily to Bertuzzi. Funny how things worked out.

Coming from an Avs fan this is amusing. Bet you were happy enough to have Claude Lemieux play with barely slaps on the wrist by the league. Admit that Steve Moore was just as dirty as Bert. Bert had a rotten, selfish attitude for years after the incident that I couldn't stand, but he did eventually change. But don't think that Bertuzzi was somehow so different than some other players, especially ones that played on your favorite team.

Random question here, but I’d thought I’d ask because you seem to be able to watch ALL games throughout the league. I just moved from LA, where of course I’d watch EVERY single Kings game possible, to ARIZONA and it seems my cable company only offers BALLY SPORTS Arizona (not Bally Sports West). In tried calling Bally Sports to see if I could buy a package through them but they said no. So….how can I watch LA KINGS games while living in Arizona?

An issue I have with the video is you make it sound like the Bertuzzi-Moore incident (Mar 8, 2004 in Denver) took place the very next game after the Moore-Naslund hit (Feb 16, 2004 in Vancouver). There was a game in between the two (Mar 3, 2004 in Denver) where Bettman was reportedly in attendance the teams were given warnings, and the game was a 5-5 tie that went off with minimal shenanigans, Moore didn't fight in that one for the record. So I'm not sure what the NHL should've done in hindsight; suspend Bertuzzi and May for every game against the Avs until the next season or playoffs for their comments? More realistically Moore should've gotten at least a game or two for the head shot of Naslund which may have quelled the Canucks' fury, but then again different league back then with different standards.

I loved Bertuzzi he was one of my favorite players ever. One of the best power forwards to ever play the game. I dont agree with what he did to Steve Moore that was a tragedy that ultimately derailed his career. I remember every time he got the puck after that you would hear boos in the crowd.

I was living in BC 2003-2006 and listened to a hockey talk show in the evenings. I was horrified that many callers were such loyal Canucks fans that they kept saying things like: "Moore deserved it". Prevented me from becoming a fan of the team.

When they lost to Min in 03.. That hilights why u need to build up success in the playoffs. So many good teams that have gone onto to win the cup face those same problems, losing or finding ways not to win a series( not to take away from a solid Min team, who got good goaltending, an MVP series from Willie Mitchell, timely scoring) still that's why u look at teams need to string together series wins to build that strength that has to be won through playoff success buildup ( look at Vegas even they had their downs in playoffs when things were going well- but they have had a string of success in playoffs to build upon)( Det had some tough series that people doubted the abilities of Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Yzerman 🙄to win it all) Doesn't help a few years meeting powerhouse Colorado in first round( avs win cup) Next year face powerhouse Det( win cup) go up 2-0 against a better team, soft goal from mid-ice in gm 3, shakes young Canucks team....again no series win, or extended experience Next year lose in 1st rd tough series to Cgy( loses in cup final) Next year lose to Min in second rd Next year lose Bertuzzi to suspension, gutted the top line, a team who was a contender Again not about suspension, it was a call/action by Bertuzzi that impacted the team That hung over the team after the suspension and seemed to derail Bertuzzi career

I always liked his leadership in Detroit, he could really come up clutch too. I was in my 20s when the Moore incident happened, but from what I remember of my fellow Detroit fans, when we got Bert most of us didn't really care about it. I feel like as a fanbase we were more forgiving of what Bert did, maybe because of what we watched our guys go through in the 90s with the big Avalanche rivalry that got way too ugly, we could understand a bit. I'm not saying that Detroit fans thought what Bert did was okay or right, but I think we were more forgiving.
