It's hard to put up 1000 points in the modern era, and putting up nearly a PPG for your career over 1000 games in that time is impressive. He was a bit like Shanahan and Gartner, guys who could still be point producers into their late 30s and not everyone can do that. That's why Ovechkin's season is so impressive. St Louis is like the first player I remember watching. Being from Saskatchewan, everyone was going crazy hoping to see a Canadian team (the flames) finally win the cup. And for some reason I was the only one cheering for Tampa. Something about him and Lecavalier together, drew me into becoming a Tampa fan. I didn’t watch for a long time after that, as back then there was no app and so there were never Tampa games on tv. But I did watch him on his run with the Rangers as playoffs were broadcast on tv, and again, didn’t seem to matter the team, he made me want them to win so bad. The Mother’s Day game has to be one of the best moments ever in hockey. I still tear up every time I watch that goal. So emotional. He is a class act. And watching his retirement ceremony was amazing, can’t imagine what it was like for those in the building. Great video Shannon. Was just planning to watch it later but I ended up watching the rest haha

Always felt like St.Louis was the heart of the Rangers 2014 run, his Mother died during the Playoffs and the Team seemed to rally around him, coming back from a 1-3 deficit in the Series against the Penguins and he scored the first Goal in Game 6 which was on Mothers Day, had they somehow beaten the Kings in the Finals, this would have been another classic Sports movie script.

Marty was a lot of fun to watch. The Stanley Cup memories in 2004 were amazing. He was such an inspiring player, reminded me of that energy rabbit that never stops working. I was really bummed how things ended in Tampa, his trade demand as "Captain" while the Lightning were gearing up for the playoffs rubbed me the wrong way. As a fan it felt like a huge betrayal. I remember him saying some lame excuse about needing to be closer to family but everyone knew it was about not being picked by Stevie Y for the Olympics. I wish he had just sucked it up, finished out the season, and then demanded the trade in the off-season. Fans would have been "ok" with that. But it was Marty's call. One other memory of Marty in Tampa was he had this "ironman" streak going of games played, it was really impressive. He was at 499 games in a row when he was hit in the face by a puck (it was Dominic Moore) during warmups at the Rangers ironically ending his streak.

Flames fan here, our GM at the time was a complete idiot. When I told my Dad that they put St.Louis on waivers and Tampa picked him up, his comment was "that asshole wouldn't know a hockey player if he was sleeping with Bobby Orr". That GM was Craig Button, TSN hockey "expert" - his opinion was (and still is) if you're not drafted or a first round pick, you're a nobody. And what did Calgary always need for Jarome Iginla? A play making center. Still burns my butt thinking about it, whenever I hear Button talking hockey I'm reminded of my Dads comment.
@AvsJoe2 жыл бұрын
For the record, Marty St. Louis wasn't a center, he played right wing, same as Iginla. I completely agree that it was still a mistake for the Flames to let go of St. Louis but he and Iggy may not have been ideal linemates given they both naturally played at the same spot.
@stanschmenge19652 жыл бұрын
@@AvsJoe yeah, but he’s a left shot and smart players can play anywhere. The genius Craig Button also traded C Marc Savard for a guy that never came to North America. He ended up starring for Boston before concussions ended his career.

Like Vinny Lecavalier, Marty is another of my favorite players of all time, more so because he and I are the same height. Something fun for the off-season might be a series of alternate hockey history videos where you speculate on what might have happened if certain events did or did not take place. You bring up a great example of St. Louis being drafted by Minnesota and ultimately knocking out Anaheim in 2003. Another would be if the Oilers DIDN'T trade Gretzky, etc.

St. Louis had a criminally underrated career. It was a shame he was left over the NHL 100 list. 2004-2014 he had one of the more dominant decades of all time. 1 cup (2 finals appearances, and 2 CF appearances), 2nd in points, 8th in goals, 2 Art Ross, Hart, Lester, 4 Lady Bings. He checks off all the boxes and didn't really start being dominant until his late 20s. There's a lot of people in the top 100 list that don't sniff that many accomplishments while playing far longer.
