The 01-02 Red Wings were old but stacked! They had Yzerman, Lidstrom, Shanahan, Fedorov, Hasek, Chelios, Hull, Robitaille, Larionov, and Datsyuk!

I think it's hilarious that the Kings drafted legendary MLB pitcher Tom Glavine before Robitaille.
@Burning_Tyger4 жыл бұрын
@@irgids Really? I've never heard that before. I always heard him state that it was because being left handed was something special in baseball, especially as a pitcher, and less unique in hockey. Regardless, I still love that one of my favorite baseball players of all time almost played for my favorite hockey team.

Luc Robitaille use to tell the story of his draft day. Pretty funny story when you look how is career went out. After 8 round of draft, Luc decided he was done with it and started to leave the Montréal Forum (where the 1984 draft was being held). A fan of his junior team, the Hull Olympics, recognized him and started running after him and yelled to him "Luc! Luc! You just got drafted by the Kings!" Luc became estatic and went down to meet the Kings management. When he arrived, he said "Hi! I'm luc Robitaille." The man from the king organization replied "Wait who?" to which Luc replied "Well, I'm the guy you just drafted" and the man from the kings organization said "oh....yeah right.... hum....we don't have jerseys anymore so far in the draft so....here is a pin of the Kings Logo if you really want it....."

I remember Luc stepping up in LA during that period where Gretzky was injured. I forget which season it was, but he always delivered. Nothing but respect for Robitaille
@GrinderCB4 жыл бұрын
The 92-93 season was when Gretzky had the back injury from the Canada Cup the previous summer and the surgery caused him to miss the first 2/3 of the season. So, Gretzky wasn't really a Hart trophy candidate because of that, and Luc stepped up and led the team that year en route to the Kings' first ever trip to the Finals. BTW, Luc's 63 goals broke the record for goals in a season by a left winger previously held by Steve Shutt. It would stand until just a few years ago when Ovechkin broke it.
@SverigeiSverige4 жыл бұрын
Great note, but Gretzky played 45 games = missed less than 1/2 of the season.

Marcel Dionne as another french canadian on the kings was taking care of Luc for his rookie season 86-87. When Luc got there in the traning camp Marcel asked him what are you plans if you make the team? He was expecting Luc to say, I wanna have a place on Malibu near the beach like all the other kids, but Luc told him: I just want to have a room in a pension place like in the juniors, because I want to concentrate myself on playing hockey. Marcel was impressed he told his wife: I finally meet a kid who wants to play hockey :).

I think hockey fans admired LUCKY LUC because we could see how much he loved playing the game. Always on the loose with a smile on his face, Luc played a clean style but also a gritty determined type of game, always willing to venture into the high traffic areas of the ice. Never the biggest, never the fastest, he just had a uncanny knack for putting the puck in the back of the net. He had a lightening fast wrist shot and would use it by shooting from almost any angle. That's how he acquired the nickname"LUCKY" but luck had little to do with his goal-scoring abilities, it was pure skill.

As a Ranger fan, I was so sad he didn't work out in NY. I think he was miscast; he wasn't the right winger to match up against the trap happy Devils and legion of doom era Flyers 7 times a year each.

If memory serves me, Luc broke his ankle one of the seasons while with the Rangers. Also, you mentioned his foot speed. That was one of reasons why he was drafted,... 170 spots BEHIND (Super) Mario Lemieux. Aside from "Lucky" being one of Luc's nicknames, his lesser-known one was, in fact, "Zamboni", b/c he skated so slowly. ***Tried to find the Arsenio Hall interview with Luc, but can't - SORRY. :-(

I can say I had alot more respect for Luc after he played in Detroit. Him and Larionov scored a couple big goals to help them get past Colorado the year they won the cup. And 30 goals for a 3rd line center playing maybe 15 minutes a night is pretty much all you can ask for. Great video btw.

Everybody knows that, the game was different and the quality of goaltending wasn't anywhere to what it is today. But in defense of Robitaille, since it was easier to score and put up points, why didn't more players do it? He was an unknown talent who turned out to be one of the best left Wings, if not the best left wing in NHL history. Having said all that, I'm not discounting your point. Robitaille or even Gretzky wouldn't come close to scoring the goals and points in today's modern NHL.
