He was a great guy in the community where he played. Always remember him as the guy that the Calgary Flames always coveted, finally got him, traded him away in a bad trade and then re-signed the next season for half price. Still was a great player on and off the ice and glad the Flames had a piece of him. He had to live up to big contracts and being a third overall pick for his career. When he did play in the playoffs, he had a big game in game 4 when the Calgary Flames played against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Hey! 2010 was an interesting year on Olli's career. He ended up scoring deciding goals in Vancouver to win the bronze for Finland, and declared this was his last tourney. He was never much appreciated in the Finnish hockey circles either, everyone had an image of a cocky kid (because he seemed like one when he was a NHL-bound teen). 2010 also happened to be a year when the Flyers' playoff campaign came down to game #82 where either the Rangers or the Flyers would get it in. The game went in to a shootout and who missed the last shot by the rangers? You'd never guess. ...and then he had to watch how the Flyers went all the way to the finals that year. I've always had a great admiration for the guy. He took all that abuse and kept on going. Great video dude, I'm a fan! Mikko from Finland

I don't like it when people call athletes losers because it didn't work out for them. Newsflash to them, the failings in their life/lack of performance in some area's don't end up under a magnifying glass. It's worthwhile to remember that Olli has a bit of legend status in Finland. He won Finnish Championship with HIFK 1997-98, and that was of the all time great Finnish teams, and in the same season he did also win U-21 World Championship (that was played in Finland). So in NHL he might have a stigma of only getting to playoffs once but in Finland, I'd we see he has a leader and a winner. And then there that how he did turn his lifestyle totally around. He used to a have in his youth reputation of being partyanimal but then he stopped drinking and basically became a sort of Gary Roberts style fittness pro.

My Mother's parents came to the States from Finland around WWI time frame. Europe was a mess, the Communists were taking over in Russia. It was time to get out of town. When I was watching on draft day and they showed Olli's parents, his Mom looks so much like my Grandmother it's scary. Haven't been able to find out if we're related on some distant level, but it wouldn't surprise me. I also think the thing that stunted Olli's career was the Kings bringing him up too soon. I'm pretty sure he has admitted that the first four or so years of his NHL career went living like a rock star. Drugs and alcohol ruled those years and he does not even remember parts of those seasons. If I remember correctly it was Mike Keenan calling him out in front of the team that helped him get his shit together when the other option was to pack his packs and fly back to Finland. It would be nice if I had the source but unfortunately I can't Google well enough with my phone. Nevertheless he has been public about that part of his life. These days he runs a hockey school in Florida and coaches juniors.
