Swede here. Forsberg came home in 09-10 to play for free for MODO, they were risking elimination and bankrupcy. Him and Naslund played without salaries to draw a crowed to a new arena that he had funded. Played 23 games, 11 goals and 19 assists for a total of 30 points.

He’s certainly one of the biggest “what ifs” in the history of the game. I watched a lot of Avalanche games as a kid and got to see him live multiple times as they were in the same division as the Oilers, and I am always surprised at how much time that he actually missed in his career. I look at him as nothing less than one of the all-time greats, despite only putting up 885 career points. The man was one the hardest people to remove from the puck that you will ever see. He would spend entire shifts with the puck, I swear. Even if he wasn’t doing anything that would lead to a goal, your team certainly wasn’t getting to play in the offensive zone for that shift, that’s for sure.

not only that. look at his defensive play. no jagr, ovechkin would tetrive the puck in their own zones, move the puck up the ice and score/assist on a goal. he was all over the ice and still managed to be a 1-point-per game player at worst

Exactly,& how you have to judge him isn't total points...it's points per game...& mostly in the dead puck era,where you were allowed to all but kill people.. before it was a penalty.(Marchment,Hatcher,Matmichuk,Scott Stevens)

Grew up with Forsberg being the big name in Swedish hockey. So much talent, so much grit. Even though he had an injury ridden career I think that somehow adds to the mystique around the guy. Such a 'what if'. He was a hell of a player to watch thats for sure.

Forsberg was a great player who had his career shortened due to injury, but he wasnt even the best player on his own team. Francis was the best on multiple teams except for Pittsburgh!

arguing francis is better than forsberg is stupid and i say this as a penguins fan playing longer and piling up stats does not make a player better than a guy that was arguably the best in the world for a few years your kariya/crosby example makes no sense considering crosby has more career points and has many individual trophies while kariya has nothing, francis has better stats than mario and just as many cups so i don't see the comparison with kariya/crosby show me one ranking list that has francis ahead of forsberg, in honesty i think forsberg is a bit overrated he seems to becomes a better player the longer he's out of the game, but he's still better than francis just like mario is better than francis despite having less numbers on his stat sheet i believe in stats when players are close in talent and peak, for example gretzky and mario are arguably the two best ever but gretzky gets the nod because his stats are much better

MikeG82 cups is a team sport that has nothing to do with this argument. Just because you and I are pens fans doesn't mean your making a good argument for Forsberg. Yes lemieux and Gretzky are close in comparison. I used kariya and Crosby because they just recently in the last two seasons were very close statistically even though we both know Crosby still has plenty of career left. (This was an arguement circulating around Pittsburgh when Crosby first got hurt) Forsberg was maybe the best in the world for a season if we can even consider that best in the world since he never repeated it and his best season still is less then Francis best season. Yes Forsberg won a hart and art Ross that's certainly an accomplishment unfortunately the season he won it the field wasnt that impressive. Difference between them Francis helped his team win back to back cups Forsberg didn't help his team win both cups. Honestly we are arguing over apples and oranges. Ironically he's the Eric lindros of the Colorado avalanche, a career cut short with plenty of potential that has what ifs surrounding it. Mark messier never won anything his entire career is considered one of the greatest of all time

Chris Pronger said on a podcast that Forsberg was his favorite player in the league to battle with. That kind of willingness to battle with one of the biggest and meanest defensemen the sport has ever seen, while also being one of the best point producers of his era and probably the best playoff performer - that's quite a hockey player.

The season he only played in the playoff was BEASTLY! The series against Detroit was so dramatic. He was close to (almost singlehanded) take them to another Cup. Thats my biggest Forsberg moment.

I remember seeing him last time in vancouver olympics 2010 sweden jersey and he wasnt the same man!!. I think the most impressive thing about Forsberg is that he put up those numbers while opposing players were clutching and grabbing and riding on his back. Elias Petterson will be the new Forsberg when it come to play-making (not the physicality and meanness). Both players have that intangible hockey sense.

He said in several swedish interwievs that before 30 (03) he felt good, had a good time, everything just beeing good. But after that it was misery and just a fight against his body. Also worth nothing that in 96 he was a member of the tripple gold club and felt a bit 'oh this is easy'. I'm just happy that Forsberg is very well thought of and loved in Sweden. So many people have very fond memories of him. A man who deserve all the respect.

Most bone headed guy to ever come out of Sweden and play hockey. When you look at his highlights there was absolutely no quit in the man. He shoved through better or worse by punishing his body way too much for way too long but all he ever wanted was to compete in hockey. They say he changed the way north Americans look at Swedish players forever. He played during the hooking era and despite some strong guys' best efforts it took so incredibly much to get him off the puck even if you were playing him dirty.

Had to watch an old documentary on Forsberg from 2011 where he explained that never understood what the word "spleen" meant :D. It was all thanks to his GM, at a dinner, saving his life. They found half a gallon of blood in his stomach at the hospital. Yikes! Poor guy. What a talent, played super hard but also had massive amounts of heart in the game his whole career. As a Wings fan watching my team during their rise in the early 90’s it was frustrating as hell to watch them play the Aves (ok the rivalry games were awesome) bc it seemed like Forsberg just couldn’t be stopped, he had such command, physical play and puck control. When I think of a complete player he’s one I would think of, just didn’t have major or even minor weaknesses in his game.

4:50 - Well you could make a lot of arguments aboy Peter Forsberg's play-style and choise of playing the 04-05 hockey season. BUT in his defence for that choise, he did that out of pure loyalty to his hometown Ornskoldsvik and Modo Hockey, his foster team since childhood, and he allong with several Modo NHL stars, Markus Naslund, the Sedin brothers had near "promised" to win for there team a Swedish championship aka SM-guld. Modo was joined with a lot of NHL star power beside them; Tommy Salo, František Kaberle, Alexander Steen, Adrian Aucoin, Mattias Weinhandl etc so Forsberg & Naslund fully believed they had great tallents to finally win home that championship. But they still had a mediocre season and went swept eliminated in 1st round play-off. Other Swedish teams had great NHL star reinforcments as well so the league was major stacked that lock-out season.

Great video! Though I would argue that the further we get from his era the more his in-game dominance compared to other greats with more games and points is recognized. That's why he was a first ballot hall of famer with no real discussion unlike some of the others you mentioned. If you consider the testimonies of players who played with/against him and that he was 8th all time in ppg playing in the nhl's lowest scoring era his case for the HHOF is pretty clear.

Also, Peter Forsberg is only one out of three NHL players in the Triple Crown Club (twice...) with Larionov and Fetisov (both HOFs). 96/97 was supposed to be his year. I almost threw up when Todd Simpson (a nobody of course) stuck out his leg and got Forsberg in the thigh... had it been the knee - his career would have been even shorter. He was killing it and so much fun to watch that year. Simpson a nobody taking out a HOF.

How about an episode on MoDo Hockey and the town Örnsköldsvik in northern Sweden with 30 000 residents. That has produced NHL players like: Peter Forsberg, Marcus Näslund, Niklas Sundström, Victor Hedman, Samuel Påhlsson, Daniel & Henrik Sedin, Toby Enström, Mattias Timander, Linus Ullmark, Robert Hägg. When healthy, Peter Forsberg was one of the best offensive players on the ice in the era of the trap. Had he not accumulated so many injuries in a short period of time, he would have easily passed the 1000 point threshold and could have continued on playing longer than he did. Probably could have played into the early 2010s.

On one hand, it's a shame the Flyers didn't keep him and let him blossom in Philly. On the other hand, Lindros was one of the most dominant players in the league and only injuries held him back. I still say Lindors was worth trading for.
