They are similar to hyenas in which the males must also leave the group to find new ones and prevent inbreeding. The males are also at the bottom of the hierarchy.

In my opinion this species is the most unattractive of all macaques because of their funny looking hairstyle. I love long-tail macaques the most. If you haven't watched before lookup Sweet Pea monkey on KZbin and you will laugh at how he quacks like a duck when he was little. Sadly his mother was stabbed to death and his father was shot and killed just yesterday.

I would assume both male and female's who reached maturity would leave to stop inbreeding, not just males. I would have thought females born into the troop, usually fathered by alpha male and maybe 1-2 high ranking member males, would have a chance of breeding with their father. I'm thinking now I'm wrong, based on this documentary, but still dont understand how females don't run risk of inbreeding. Maybe because females dont become sexually mature until around 4-5 and alpha males dont usually reign for many years, but again I may be misunderstanding it.

The Alpha male who fathered those daughters is now well past his prime and dropped several places in the hierarchy to the point they don't mate very often- retired so to speak.

Samething with lion prides. I asked myself this all the time. Like, Rn't those his daughters still?? Then there's the video of the leopard who chased her own daughter far away but kept her son lingering in the same territory as her.

new immigrant males enter the troop, and there are a bunch of challenges to establish his rank. He will father babies with the females of the troop, and if he’s tough enough could rise to be a high ranking monkey himself. The teenage monkeys who leave their maternal troops find new troops and have to face this same challenge. That’s how they avoid the inbreeding.
