An unusual friendship is brewing at Orangutan Jungle School between one of the orangutans and a young male macaque. Inter-species friendships are rare- but they’re more common here than in the wild.

@peterp2153

Heck yeah. These animals, more so the orangutan can establish friendships. Scientifically it’s “social bonding” or “strengthening social networks” but is human friendship really any different, apart from us humans doing things like going to the mall together or taking a road trip? I also like how the monkey and orangutan establish boundaries without ending contact or getting violent. Slowly gaining trust.

So cute! And it's more common than you think - even happens in the wild, somewhere on KZbin there's footage of a wild baby orangutan playing in the trees with a young gibbon. This probably marks the start of the maternal instinct in this young female orangutan, which is the strongest of all the great apes.
