Everywhere at the end of time - Stage 2
thecaretaker.bandcamp.com/alb...
00:00:00 - C1 - A losing battle is raging
00:04:38 - C2 - Misplaced in time
00:09:20 - C3 - What does it matter how my heart breaks
00:11:58 - C4 - Glimpses of hope in trying times
00:16:41 - C5 - Surrendering to despair
00:21:45 - D1 - I still feel as though I am me
00:25:53 - D2 - Quiet dusk coming early
00:29:30 - D3 - Last moments of pure recall
00:33:23 - D4 - Denial unravelling
00:37:39 - D5 - The way ahead feels lonely
Stage 2:
The second stage is the self realisation and awareness
that something is wrong with a refusal to accept that.
More effort is made to remember so memories can be
more long form with a little more deterioration in quality.
The overall personal mood is generally lower.

The fact that “It’s just a burning memory” gets more and more slow and distorted is really sad and scary to me. It’s almost like dementia reminding its victim “remember this memory? Now look how distorted and different it is”

It's actually, as stated in the description, because of an effort to remember. The patient would sort of fill in the blanks, resulting in a loss of accuracy. "More effort is made to remember so memories can be more long form with a little more deterioration in quality."

a hint of unease. something is *not* right. you don't know, or don't care what it is, but something is not right and you either refuse or accept it, and try to clutch onto the memories you have with you. who was that girl that came to visit you...? your daughter says she was... you think her friend? and she was a... oh... what do you call it? you can't seem to remember. what exactly is happening to you? yesterday you couldn't remember which drawer takes what sock, today, you can't seem to remember where you put your keys again. hang on while you can, old man. this is stage 2.

In my opinion, this stage is the most depressing. Either the person refuses to accept the fact that they are developing signs of dementia, which is sad in a way the person can't understand, or the person accepts the fact that their mind is deteriorating, and that they can't do anything about it. Either way, they're still aware that something is off, and that is the saddest part to me. By part 4 they are already long gone, and while soul-crushing, they are beyond knowing what is happening to them.

Right now, I'm listening to this on my 16th birthday. I have no idea what it actually is like to lose your memory. But I have a plan. I have marked my calendar on my phone. On my 60th birthday It'll remind me to listen to this again. Then I'll probably understand this better. If KZbin still works and I can come and comment here, I'll try to remember to do that. I actually get a way different image. I imagine an ordinary senior citizen at a retirement home going over their memories in their head, realizing they can't piece it all together anymore. And they just start crying, because they know they won't be there for their children or grandchildren anymore. The song title sums it up perfectly; A Losing Battle is Raging.

I imagine a bright place, clouds everywhere, an old couple. They’re dressed in old ballroom clothes, dancing away, smiling at each other. Except the woman is blurred, and grayed out. Stage 2: This is the first sign that something may be wrong. While you can't really what it is that is ever so wrong, you can feel it. That feeling messes with you. You may ask yourself "What exactly is going wrong?" or "Why is warping from what it used to be?" Some people react differently. They may feel depression or ambivalence. Whatever it is, you are in for a ride. This stage starts off in a sort of contrast with the previous one ended. It is far more distant and ambient than anything that came before it. It gives off this sense of a child-like naivety, but also it has the foreboding sense of something not being right. Almost like the character in this album is in denial. In general, this stage is a story of grief, denial, and accepting mortality. It starts off with our character being in denial of their dementia in C1. This turns to anger in C2, they are not yet ready to deal with it so they will choose to lash out. Then it becomes far more somber in C3 as we have our first reprise of Heartaches, how could things be getting worse, what's wrong with me. C4 becomes far harsher and anxiety overtakes the tune, an orchestra of fear, anger, and sadness. It calms down in C5, and it turns melancholic and depressive. It becomes more upbeat in D1, maybe the character has overcome their grief. In D2, it feels to me as if the character is reflecting on their life. They have become happy with what was, it was a good ride while it lasted. It grows euphoric in D3, almost like a celebration of the journey, we had gone through. If we are just to ignore it we can remain in bliss, but you can't ignore death forever. In D4 we realize that fact. We didn't get over it, we're only in denial. This is when the full gravity of the situation sets in. In D5 we go into a depressive state over this realization, but we come to accept this by the end. It is a roller coaster of emotions, my abridged version of my interpretation is only scratching the surface of the impactfulness of the album. Each track is important to the album; without one, the rest becomes weaker. It not only acts as a statement about mild dementia but also about the trials of grief. How often we fall into denial, but the only way to accept it is to confront it. Only when you confront it, you can grow. This stage is truly a masterpiece and really is when the albums start to shine. There isn't a dull moment, every part of it plays an important role in building the album to what it. I'd definitely recommend listening; not only with the rest of EATEOT but also on its own as a statement about grief. It is the best in my opinion, but it isn't my favorite; that one comes after.

My take on the artwork: I think, like most people, that it's a vase, and that vase is supposed to represent the brain and the flowers the memories that we all have. Notice how the flowers are slowly beginning to droop like they're beginning to die and wilt away, just like what is happening here in stage 2, the memories that we have are disintegrating into nothingness.

The name of the piece, I believe, is something along the lines of 'pittor pickgown in khatheintersper'. No idea what this means, a lot of Ivan Seal's artwork's titles are similarly nonsensical, although it is to note that some of the titles do make sense, like 'round of applause' for example.

In my opinion, the story goes a little like this: C1- A general depressive episode. What once was pure and clear now somewhat lost, corrupted. That horrid feeling of not knowing and not being able to, because that memory can never be lived again. C2- A minor recovery is made. In my opinion, it sounds almost wistful, questioning. An aura of mystery is present and lingers through the entire track. You wonder if it was a one-off thing. It wasn't. C3- You fall back into the void. Once again, what was pure and clear has changed, malformed. The memory, and quite likely you yourself, aren't the same anymore. C4- The opening bells (?) sound fearful. Once the song progresses into the remainder of the track, not much can be said but the generally low mood points itself out again. Another quite depressing one, I must say. The orchestral strings halfway through really do encompass the title. A glimpse of hope, in trying times. C5- You've given up. This is your mind's war cry. Stuck in a losing battle against your own mind, and by the end you've done once again just as the title said. You've surrendered to your own despair. Your emotions now are the only representation you have of really anything. They control you, yet vice versa is not the case. D1- The opening silence is a period of mental blankness. This digital, compressed deterioration hangs throughout the entire track. Its mere existence goes to show that you're still there. Not entirely the same person, but deep down you're still the same whoever it is you always were. D2- A major depressive episode. This so far is the lowest you've gone. It feels like it lasts years, yet minutes. It's horrible. Just horrible. D3- A brief relapse into the earlier stages of grief. Back to denial, and pretending everything's fine. Mood's still low, but this is the highest you'll get for quite some time. D4- A manic episode. The deterioration in this track is intense. Everything about it screams mania. The rising crescendo of the orchestra, the heavy reverb and delay on the lone clarinet, the fact that instrument is the only main melody, the changeup midway through the loop, just about everything is a good representation of a manic episode. Even the title shows this. Denial UNRAVELLING. Your mental state is utterly destroyed yet it collapses further. D5- Acceptance. You've collected yourself, and shown you are fully prepared for the horrors that lay ahead. You're ready for what comes next, whatever it may be. Like the brave soldier you are, you march into the void, unaware you're never to return. After this moment you will NEVER be the same person again.

Underrated stage. I’d put it as my 2nd favorite to stage 3. The artwork really puts a picture of how bad dementia starts to affect the patient. Whether it be represented by their mood, or their mind as it starts to decay. The music shows denial, grief and fear. The clearly audible crackling in the background, the distance felt in the music, and the long dragging of notes really show that memories are fading away combined with the patient’s mood, personality, and humor. The last of their true self.

"Heartaches" is a recurring motif in EATEOT, at least in Stages 1 - 4. You can still hear a very distorted sample of it during Stage 4 Postawareness Confusions (track 1 of Stage 4) if you listen closely. It comes around the 8th minute, if I recall right. After that, *if* it does play in Stages 5 and 6, it's so distorted and slowed down it's unrecognizable. I suppose Kirby chose this song to represent the whole EATEOT because it has the theme of memory, heartbreak and loss, even if it's played in major key.

I'm doing a series in the comments sections of these videos I'll call, "Sensory-deprived Commentaries on 'Everywhere at the End of Time," where I turn the lights off in my room, put a pair of headphones on, and close my eyes. Here is my review of STAGE 2, written on a notebook (spelling mistakes maintained): "This stage, by contrast, was far less than pleasant; we can thak the tone set by the first song... "Surrendering to dispair?" for that one. A mixture of evolving emotions, mostly negative... Discomfort became anxiety became distrust became anger. It was raining outside, and the faint flash of lightning sent a hot shiver down my body. My heart was racing, I feared for my life. Not even the tones of the music could I entrust to comfort me... but I managed to comfort myself down to a manageabel level of tension. The comfort came in the tone of the last two songs, to deliver me from this state of grief."

There was a hypothesis of russian psychiatrist by the name Snejnewsky called "the theory of general psychosis". He stated that that the latest stages of mental deterioration such as marasmus syndrome (total dementia) include vestigial symptoms from previous stages as well, even the mildest neurotic issues. Although portraying the onset of Alzheimer's desease nosologically, first 3 stages hardly feature cognitive disability. There is no lasting memory loss, but rather treats more common with schizophrenia: social distancing, apathy, lack of willpower and flattening of emotions (particularly stage 2). Thus, we experience the path TO dementia through every other known pathology. Caretaker made a compassionate requiem in honor of each human being who ever struggled with mental health. And this is praiseworthy.

The last track “the way ahead feels lonely” fills me with an emotion I cannot describe. It’s a mix of finality and sadness. This is where you finally say goodbye to your life. The ability to recollect your childhood, memories with family, and life itself. It’s a calm before the storm as you realize your memories are about to be wiped away. It also reminds me of a person with dementia sitting with a close friend. The friend is in tears as he describes their memories together to his friend. Realizing that this could likely be the last time he remembers him. It never fails to make me cry.

SIDE C C1 - A Losing Battle Is Raging: Probably after the diagnosis. The static is pulsating, probably representing a constant switching between mild confusion and little to no confusion. The music sounds very sad and I wouldn't normally listen to it. It also has alot of heavy droning behind it. Probably all the brain fog. This sounds like the first stage of grief: denial. C2 - Misplaced In Time: Probably a war memory on the battle field. Sounds train-like, just like C1. Definitely one of the longest loops in EATEOT, maybe the memory is a long memory that you have not forgotten yet and want to hang on to as long as you can. C3 - What Does It Matter How My Heart Breaks: Sure, I can still tell it's Heartaches, but it is much sadder. Maybe depression or sadness after the diagnosis. The violin puts me on edge. It has more aspects to it than A1 so maybe he is making up things in the previous memory of A1 without even realizing it. C4 - Glimpses of Hope In Trying Times: This is probably the second stage of grief: aggression. There is a constant anxiety playing throughout the track with is fueling this stage of denial. It is probably nervous anticipation of what is to come. C5 - Surrendering To Despair: Sounds like C1 except sadder and hopeless. You can sometimes hear distinct footsteps in the background and I do not know what this means. This track has one of the longest loops I've seen in EATEOT and lasts a long amount of time. SIDE D D1 - I Still Feel As Though I Am Me: In the beginning it sounds like stage six. Maybe it is a thick confusion happening right after you have woken up. I do not know if this is a symptom of Alzheimer's so please fact check me on this so I can correct this comment. Anyway, overtime it slowly starts to sound like music again and it sounds more upbeat than most of stage two. I do not know what this means since we are in the middle of the most depressing album on this project, maybe the character is ignoring he has dementia and trying to live his life normally. D2 - Quiet Dusk Coming Early: I do not know what this song is supposed to represent, but I am guessing it flows in the third stage of grief, bargaining. The character would do anything to stop this disease from progressing at this point or even slow it down, he/she would even sacrifice their spouse since the memories they have had with each other have mildly degraded. D3 - Last Moments of Pure Recall: It's all downhill from here. It sounds happy like D1 but there is something off. The backing instruments sounds like drums that have been ignited by the fires of hell so maybe in the memory they are having they are only focusing on the main events and nothing in the background. D4 - We are in the penultimate stage of grief: depression. The loud instruments at first don't sound like it but it gets downbeat over time. Maybe it is the character pretending to act happy in front of their family and friends. D5 - The Way Ahead Feels Lonely: Now we're in the last stage of grief, acceptance. This is the beginning of the end and the character has to realize it before it's too late. It is not a loop like C4 and D1 and quite beautiful like them too. It's one of my favorite tracks. It sounds so solemn. Wow that took alot of time to come up with. I am planning to post something like this on every stage and eventually, once I have all the comments posted on all the stages, I plan to copy and paste the entire thing onto the whole 6 and a half hour video. Wish me luck.

Glimpses of hope in trying times is possibly the most unnerving piece in my oppinion. Yes, the later stages are very upsetting on a deeper level, and the fact that they last so much longer is mentally exhausting (as it should be considering the subject matter), but this specific track causes immediate unease. It's about the melodic progressions, something about the trumpets that just yells out alarm. It might remind me of an unsettling melody I've heard in my childhood, and ever since anything that even slightly reminds me of it causes a visceral reaction. It unsettles me and at the same time it intrigues me. I'm still in search of that specific melody. I want to understand it. But for now I'm stuck with "similar enough". The track sounds like the record player has been sanded down with sand paper as the music struggles to play. Or at least, it sounds like something is cut from one song and replaying for a while, and the other song is normal 1930s music. It reminds me of a train where it goes chugga chugga, but the chuggas are bits of a different track. It's uneasy, and it gives a hint that the music is wrong, but you can't put your finger on it. As the track plays, there are some parts where the songs would echo and play on reverb. It's like that feeling when you're trying to recall a memory, but then you lose track of where you left off, so it causes you to repeat the bit of a story. In the middle it sounds like there's a mysterious tune that plays during those quiet scenes in horror movies where someone is paranoid of their surroundings. It gradually gets louder and then it hits but stays, and then calms down and plays the error tune again. it kinda spooked me because I was so used to the chill music from before. Around the 20 minute mark of the second album, the music is suddenly really droned out and long sounding. It's quiet and little bits of occasional violin playing happens. The violin sounds really weird and solo sounding, but it doesn't sound like it has a specific peice it's playing. It sounds like whoever is playing it is doing improv.

This stage is much more different. As saying, it's the most relaxing album ever. At the moment, the art is very great. The new thing to find is a pot of flowers. But there's one thing hiding. There's 2 men, or , 2 woman, at the pot. Ahh, never mind. The music has more louder cracking, echoes, and distortions.

11:58 This track marks a turning point in the album. It's a complete deviation in tone from any other track so far, with the beginning almost sounding like it's trying to say "hey! something's wrong!" This is only reinforced by the fact that we hear it just after a slightly off-kilter reprisal of A1.

Stage 2 is so sad and poignant. I can't listen to The Way Ahead Feels Lonely without crying. Those last few sobbing, sighing notes, my God. The whole stage is devastating, especially this track. Even the artwork is sad. The flowers, so delicate and perfect, but wilted, and the vase, that looks as though it's rotting. It's a perfect artistic expression of the emotions this stage is trying to evoke. Denial Unravelling is deeply unsettling and eerie to me, but I can't stop listening to it. It gives me that same feeling you get when you're doing something enjoyable, but in the back of your mind you remember a terrible problem you are having to face, and occasionally it rises up and overwhelms you. You keep the smile on your face, but inside you feel like you're dying. Overall, this stage evokes emotions of deep sadness, grief over what is being lost, and existential dread of what's to come.

Lyrics: C1 - Once in the dear dead days beyond recall, When on the world the mists began to fall, Out of the dreams that rose in happy throng Low to our hearts Love sang an old sweet song; And in the dusk where fell the firelight gleam, Softly it wove itself into our dream. Just a song at twilight, when the lights are low, And the flickering shadows softly come and go, Though the heart be weary, sad the day and long, Still to us at twilight comes Love's old song, Comes Love's old sweet song. Even today we hear Love's song of yore, Deep in our hearts it dwells forevermore. Footsteps may falter, weary grow the way, Still we can hear it at the close of day. So till the end, when life's dim shadows fall, Love will be found the sweetest song of all. Just a song at twilight, when the lights are low, And the flickering shadows softly come and go, Though the heart be weary, sad the day and long, Still to us at twilight comes Love's old song, Comes Love's old sweet song. C2 - Rustling of the leaves used to be my lullaby, In the sunny South when I was a tot so high, And now that I have grown And myself alone. Cradle me where Southern skies can watch me with a million eyes, Oh sing me to sleep, Lullaby of the leaves Cover me with heaven's blue and let me dream a dream or two, Oh sing me to sleep, Lullaby of the leaves. I'm breezing along, along with the breeze, I'm hearing a song, a song through the trees, Ooh ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh. That pine melody caressing the shore familiar to me, I've heard it before, ooh ooh ooh ooh. That's Southland, don't I feel it in my soul, And don't I know I've reached my goal, Oh sing me to sleep, Lullaby of the leaves. C3 - Heartaches, Heartaches.. What does it matter how my heart breaks? Your kiss was such a sacred thing to me, I can't believe it's just a burning memory! C4 - No lyrics. C5 - Sweet and low, sweet and low, Wind of the western sea, Low, low, breathe and blow, Wind of the western sea. Over the rolling waters go, Come from the dying Moon and blow, Blow him again to me, While my little one, While my pretty one, sleeps. D1 - No lyrics. D2 - To have, to hold, to live for just a moment, In ecstasy, and then to be, forgotten. To laugh, at life, and learn to sing a love song, A melody, that's soon to be, forgotten. When, love has ended, to cry, but when, Your heart, is mended, to love, again. A night, of bliss, but when the dawn is breaking, A memory, that's soon to be, forgotten. Love is a flower that blooms in May, Fresh for a moment, then fades away. Love is a vowel, while springtime hums, To be forgotten, when winter comes. To have, to hold, to live for just a moment, In ecstasy, and then to be, forgotten. To laugh, at life, and learn to sing a love song, A melody, that's soon to be, forgotten. When, love has ended, to cry, but when, Your heart, is mended, to love, again. A night, of bliss, but when the dawn is breaking, A memory, that's soon to be, forgotten. D3 - Into my heart, Querida You came unknowing Into my heart, Querida With love light glowing Close to my breast forever, I long to hold you Your tender eyes remind me of stars above Into my heart, Querida You came to me with love! D4 - I am just a shadow, you are all the light You are like the sunrise, I am just the night You are all my heavens, smiling from above I'm the earth beneath you, reaching for your love You are part of me, dear, I am part of you Joy will always be near just with you, I love you In my love letter, cheers to belong I am just a singer, but you are the song! This is definitely more melancholic than the first stage, and downright foreboding at times with tracks like C4 "Glimpses of hope in these trying times." The first track and C5 "Surrendering to despair" were rather intriguing to me with that record skipping noise and the droning. From C4 onward I imagined old timey movies, like some kind of fantasy film and a western movie, as well as an orchestra, but by the later tracks my images of them became more distorted, often overlapping one another.

It's so distorted and disturbing but I enjoy its uneasy and horrifying behavior in its tone and atmosphere, the high and low volumes bring me too such a vibrant landscape of sound, its very mysterious on what will happen next it's so unexpected yet you can somewhat feel it occurring in your mind, oh how gruesome and terrifying each note is, in every part of it's time my skin crawls of anxiety and torture as very sound echoes in my ears starting a mental breakdown do to my weak memory of what I have become, I slowly fall apart drifting into madness and nonsense, slowly losing my very fiber of my true existence and morality, what will become of me next I wonder? What will be the new normal? What will become of us now? The color in the eyes slowly loses its pigment into a dead white as I forget and forget and forget and forget and forget and forget and forget and forget and forget and forget and forget and forget and forget, what are you now? I haven't gone through its misdirection and complexion since your last day of imperfection, very depressing and uncomfortable and unnerving to my brain cells, I enjoy the music none the less.

One thing I’ve noticed about state two is that it has a lot more static that stage three, but stage three has far more reverb, along with some static. I think this can possibly be because in stage two, although you are loosing memories, you can still grasp on to of them, although it is harder to, and with more deterioration in quality. Thats what I think the static represents. Whereas in stage three you are starting to loose a lot of long term memories, and even more short term memories. This can lead to confusion, which is where I think the reverb and droning comes in. Basically to sum it up stage two is your memories degrading, and forming less and less, and of coarse you losing some memories, and stage three is where memories start to become more fluid, and you begin to loose track things going on around you. You simply can’t remember what is what. Idk that’s just what I think feel free to share your take.

Definitely my favourite of the 6, and the one I find most relatable, because it tackles denial and depression It sounds so sad, it's obvious the person is mourning what they're going to lose and they're trying so hard to be strong for their loved ones but they're still wilting. Heartbreaking. And definitely relatable for me, I don't have dementia but I have depression and trauma, and I have to hide both of those things and be strong for the people around me. But really I feel like a part of me has died, and I'm mourning that person
