Wow, otto e mezzo is on this recording. Carla is honoring Nino Rota. I knew Federico Fellini well. He told me that his favorite musicians were Nino Rota and Carla Bley plus Giachino Rossini.

Someone stole my "Ihate to sing" studio Album at a hell of a Party i held - more like borrowed it and never gave it back. Still miss it. So thanks for this live rendition from the same period. Fortunately she really visited Germany, especially Hamburg very often, so one could really regularily go out and see her different Formations.

I loved this band SO MUCH. I saw them one night at the late lamented Seventh Avenue South club in NYC around this time and stayed for all three sets - sitting thisclose to her at the piano! What a find! Thank you!

I saw them at the Public Theater in 1979 and at Fat Tuesday's in 1986. Hearing this from 1982 is FANTASTIC. I love everything she writes. The early "out" stuff, EOTH, the mid-80s "smooth" stuff, the '70s Weill-esque stuff, and everything since. She's so consistently great. She's just over 80 y/o now and has a new record out. I hope she continues in good health and keeps writing until she's 100 or more!

And you know what? I made her laugh. I really was sitting right next to her, and she began the simple single-note intro of "Ida Lupino." And the mood of the room was so giddy that in one of the pauses I murmured "so far, so good." And she laughed!

I met her several times. She was everything, she really was. Something less known in the US is that Escalator over the Hill was the number 1 jazz album in Europe from the late 60s through the late 70s.
