110 years old, costs 5000$ equivalent to today and still looks (and definitely appears to work better) than the "modern" split claw prosthetics that cost 10,000$. Unbelievable.

How does the amputee pull the chords to get the fingers to open and close?
@thehouseofautomata3 жыл бұрын
Either upper arm flexing or if the upper arm is absent as well then by shoulder flexing, a special harness is made bespoke for each person which could be strapped to upper arm or back/shoulder as appropriate

Why is the hand that's on display able to show 1 finger up and the other fingers differently flexed then the 1 that you were working on. Is the 1 that you were working on different mechanically inside then the 1 being displayed?And is the 1 being displayed have a lot more mechanisms inside the hand in order to have finger movements. Thanks for the answer.
@thehouseofautomata4 жыл бұрын
Well spotted! the hand in the dome is a different Carnes hand where the transverse rack bar with the finger lever connections have been removed allowing all the fingers to be posed individually. It cannot work like this but I prefer it for display. The disconnected parts are stored in the hand to prevent loss.

Imagine if people in 18th and 19th centuries would have already had fully developed electronics. We would already have robots precisely mimicking human body and Jules Verne book "The Terminator" would take place in the beginning of 20th century.
@alexello1189 Жыл бұрын
Jules Verne did not write “the terminator”…. That’s a movie made in 1984 by James Cameron. I don’t even know where you got that information
@remejas Жыл бұрын
@@alexello1189 that was a prediction, that if 18th century would have electronics, Verne would be writing not about underwater journey, but Cyborgs.

may i introduce you to Ian Davis's youtube channel? this is a machinist who has a similar problem. check out what he did, worth spending a couple of minutes to see his design.

This prosthetics hand remind me of the one the Inspector have in "Young Frankenstein". Edit: Who knows, maybe it was based off this design.

I think that you are solving problem wrong way. Electric motors and gears are slow and weak. Look at the Darpa's robot Atlas. It uses electrohydraulic actuators. Electropneumatic actuators or electrohydraulic actuators are faster and stronger.
