Not many serious actors can do comedy very well, but Roddy McDowall was not afraid to put himself out there in order to have a little fun, and audiences loved him for it. As a young girl growing up in the 70s, I thought he was adorable. It was always a treat to see him on The Carol Burnett Show. RIP Roddy McDowall. ♥

Remember sitting with my mother in the Capitol Theater in Vancouver watching Lassie Come Home . Think we both shed a few tears. No wonder I'm writing this now How Green Was My Valley was a real winner, too. Beats the crud they produce so much today. There was class back then that seems to have gone now. Mom would not approve, nor would I. Roddy, we who remember you, miss you.

Carol doesn't get enough credit for her singing ability. Not only could she do novelty songs, she could wail a soulful ballad or torch song with the best of 'em. I always loved when she would sing on the show.

As a Brit, I'm insanely proud Roddy McDowall was an Englishman! He was loved by all who knew him, as a truly wonderful, loyal friend (Liz Taylor was among his closest buddies). By all accounts he was the real deal - he really was as witty, charming, genteel and fabulous as he appeared. And what a powerhouse talent! That man could play everything from comedy to tragedy. Only he could have imbued that rubber chimp mask with so much personality! We all have a favourite Roddy performance - mine might be his wonderful cameo as horror TV host 'Peter Vincent' in 'Fright Night', opposite the equally sublime Chris Sarandon in 1985. He made every role magical to the end of his life. Roddy's death from lung cancer in 1998 aged 70, took him from us far too soon. But what a wonderful life!
