This isn’t from 91. The song was recorded around 79, when Karen was working on her solo album, which got cancelled because Richard and all the other poo-pooed it. Then Karen died in ‘83. Richard decided to release her solo album posthumously in the 90s

It was initially released on "From the top" in 1991.

What a vocal bliss!Karen's a unique category one of a kind.Such top female soloist, could even make a lot of today's overestimated Divas sound like a flock of dreadfully sqealing crows compared to her. She's marvelously Utopic.

Lots of people slated them for all the successful ballads but she had the range to do anything…without vocal gymnastics that seems to be encouraged these days yet i feel is so not needed. Karen had that wonderful ability of making you feel every word of a song.

Thank you for reviewing this but it's not by the Carpenters but Karen only. This is from her solo album recorded in New York with Billy Joel's producer Phil Ramone. Recorded in 1979/1980, her album was shelved until 1996. 13 years after her death it was finally released.

It was such a shame that Karen's solo album wasn't originally released in 1979/80, it would have been huge!!!!

Wasn’t Karen a gift fro God? She could dance, she could sing and she was one of the world’s best drummers! This was an actual solo effort when she took time off in NYC to recover from Anorexia. This was recorded in 1979 under the guidance of Phil Ramone. Another great one was “Remember When Lovin’ Took All Night”

first off this is NOT a carpenters recording. this was a solo recording karen did for a solo album she did before she died and the project was shelved. richard had no part of this since he was in rehab and she recorded a whole album with phil ramone. billy joel and barbara streisand producer. she had told richard her plans to do a solo record and was worried she was breaking up the act and told her just dont do any disco but she did anyways. a&m recprds was not happy with the outcome of the recordings and karen made the choice not to release it. the record company should have put it out in early 80s but they officially released it in the early 90s

Hi Gene.Don't know about the rest of the solo stuff but this sounds really beautiful. Can't clear out why Richard/AM, had reservationS on Disco.Twas 1979.Abba did it as well.Everyone did it at the time.Even rockers such as Blondie,Kiss,Stones,Rod Stewart,Elton John.Karen could sing anything and still sound exquisite.

@@alexioverdo5225 i have karens solo cd and got it when they finally released it. the album has many different styles on it and still not sure why herb alpert and co, didnt like it or thought it wouldnt have sold. karen went to nyc and stayed with producer phil ramone and his wife while she recorded this. i believe this was a big letdown and setback for karen. just glad these tracks finally came out, i would get a copy of this for yourself, you will enjoy it.

Richard had no part is right, but he pressured their record company boss, Herb Albert, to deep six the album in 1980. Richard was coming out of addiction rehab and was scared sh*tless young sis Karen might have a solo career without him. It was a personal selfish reason on his part and every Carpenters fan knows he had only his own interests at heart. A&M Records boss Herb Albert admitted many years later he really didn't dislike Karen's album, but didn't want to create discourse between them. Richard more or less "bullied" Herb into shelving her album. Boo to Herb Albert for caving in.

Karen did not make the choice to shelve the album. The decision was made for her. Karen very much wanted to release it but that was blocked by the powers that be and the family.

Only correction you prob know by now is Karen recorded it in 79 to be released as part of her solo album in 80. Older brother Richard pressured their record company boss Herb Albert to deep six the album in 80. Richard finally released it 13 years after Karen's death posthumously in 96.

In 91 on From the top.

This was from Karen's solo album which got shelved until 1996 I think. Richard convinced the record company the album was too risqué for the Carpenters image. Karen spent her own money to finance the project. It's a real shame it didn't get released until 13 years after her death.

This single would've fit nicely alongside songs from Donna Summer, Bee Gees, Deborah Harry, etc. in 1979-80.

thank you D for this reaction. I thought you might give your stamp of approval, I am glad Karen recorded this basically against Richard's request. It is interesting that when Richard released her solo album he did include this one over some others that were not released. I understand there are more songs form her solo session in New York that she recorded. They were never released but some how they leaked on the Internet and found here on you tube. I read also the masters were in a volt just sitting there, that is if they were not destroyed in the studio Fire. As it is Karen's solo album is a masterpiece in itself. I always ventured to wonder how it would have been if they just released her album then. Also if Karen basically said she had enough and released it on her own. I know that would not have happened that Karen really loved her brother a great deal. I just find it interesting what could have, or should have happened. Bottom line is that I am glad Richard did finally release this album even if it were not all there songs she recorded at that time.

This is one of the songs she recorded for her great solo album that Richard and the label decided not to release. I think this song and "If I Had You" (among others) would have been huge hits - and they clearly didn't want her to shine as a solo star. Such a shame.
