I was actually familiar with Hommell cars before they were eventually featured in Gran Turismo 4, but there's a bit of a story to it. All the way back in the very early 2000s, probably around the time GT3 came out, I had the opportunity to visit a museum in the French town of Lohéac, called the Manoir de l'Automobile. This museum is the property of Michel Hommell, and multiple Hommell cars are on display there (among many, many, many others), including the playable Berlinette RS Coupe and two prototypes of it, but also some of the versions you mentioned, such as the Berlinette Echappement, the Barquette, and even the RS2. Having returned to the museum in 2019 and in 2023, I'm happy to confirm they are all still there in nearly pristine condition. If you ever find yourself in this corner of France, I can't recommend visiting it enough, this is quite possibly the only way to see a Hommell in real life relatively conveniently.

@chucku00

@@purwantiallan5089 Nope. Berlinette : French word for a small sports coupé (similar to the Italian "berlinetta"). The original Alpine A110 was colloquially named "la berlinette" in France before the Hommell Berlinette has been released. Barquette : French word for a small sports roadster (generally without a windshield like a Renault Spider, similar to the Italian "barchetta") The Hommell Barquette was just a roofless version of the Berlinette.

Funnily enough, while deciding a team name/identity for my 2020 MyTeam career mode; Gran Turismo gave me the idea of reviving Chaparral as an F1 team. (The influence was particularly from the 2X VGT with some influence from the historically legendary Chaparral's like the 2J, 2D and the Indycar championship winning 2K) After winning 40+ Grand Prix's and 4 Drivers and 3 Constructor's Titles and loving the pure insanity from Jim Hall's innovations. Chaparral became one of my favorite stories of Motorsport. God Bless Jim Hall.

I always wondered how the devs were finding those cars at all, especially back in the 90's. They probably had a special department that was going through foreign magazines to find what they can. And even if they did, I can't imagine how hard it was for a Japanese person to try and contact a little custom car manufacturer somewhere in Europe.

It's funny how, because Gran Turismo doesn't simulate engine malfunctions, cars that are considered unreliable IRL are able to shine in-game. The Minolta 88C-V is a great example as you show, since it's 50kg lighter than most other Group C's without any real downside. The tyre wear issue can be fixed by lengthening the gears or driving in MT, since 1st and 2nd gear are pretty much unusable when it has over 900hp. The FD RX-7's are top-class JDM's as well in a world where you're not forced to deal with rotary shenanigans. By the way, to give a bit of insight into the V16T, GT4 absolutely doesn't do it justice. Cars in GT4 follow a general rule of "newer = better", so PD gave the V16T far worse grip stats than, say, the Zonda's or Esprit's. It has a few weird quirks as well: it has 0 / 20 non-adjustable downforce and the rear tyres are much wider than the front, so while it does have a 40:60 weight distribution, it feels very strange in corners because it both understeers and oversteers depending on the situation. This is all on top of it weighing 1361kg after reductions, so yeah, it's a boat with some not-so-ideal braking distances, and tuning can only really do so much to help it.

Whenever you think gear ratios are unusuable, use these numbers: 1 1.15 1.35 1.65 2.1 2.5 And then adjust the final ratio until it's good for the car's top speed. This way the car will have a MotoGp-esque ratio where 1st is really long and usable with all the other gears keeping you in the highest part of your RPMs. If the car has 7 gears the top gear should be like 0.95 or so.
@TeaKanji
@TeaKanji 11 ай бұрын
@@DanArnets1492 Those numbers are going to be different for every car, especially if you mess with the auto slider. There's an easier way to get those close gear ratios though, if you make final as short as possible, set auto to 1, stretch out the gears with final again, then arrange the individual ratios so 1st and 2nd are left, 5th and 6th are right, and 4th is 3/4's to the right. For the 88C-V, that would be: final to 5.500, then auto to 1 then final to 2.600, then set individual gears to 2.882, 2.061, 1.685, 1.390, 1.159, 0.976.

You've had gorgeous concepts of some kind of "Gran Turismo Remakes", which had beautiful design and I really miss them, since it's a great example of the idea "if you'll take the UI design from the old games and remake it in Full HD - it would be strongly competitive even to modern games". I have vaguely fond memories of the XJ13 trying to win the historic racing car cup with my best friend. It was such an erratic handful and slightly underspec compared to its rivals so you had to be all but perfect throughout the entire race to win, the race at deep forest was one of those where if you made a mistake you just had to restart because there was no catching up. After about 40 restarts I finally managed to get into the zen like state where man and car became one and despite a big twitch on the 2nd to last left hander where the GT40 managed to get past I managed to make a big lunge into the last corner and out dragged it to the line with a gap in the thousandths. Huge relief and forever viewed as a driving god by my best friend

I did buy a really good jaguar in group c book that I still have to this day. I'd seen the Cizeta before in a supercar book in the library early 90s. I watched the Minolta Toyota racing in the 1988 1000 km of Fuji (I was 4 years old) on VHS. My dad used to go to le mans to support jaguar which was common in Coventry. I'm glad you mentioned the reasons for why they probably chose it as I always came to the same conclusion that they should have chosen the ts010 or the 94c-v I still can't work out why they added the 99 r34 penzoil skyline and the Castrol supra without the nsx that raced them both, same for the BMW/mercedes dtm 2016 cars for group 2

What I find funny is that the Hot Wheels car came out the year before GT4 came out in Japan. Makes me wonder if Hot Wheels and GT got their ideas separately or not.

I mean yeah, i only knew of the '89 Toyota Minolta 88c-v race car because of GT4. It was insane to see a car, with a big turbo and an oil change hit over 1,200 hp.

The Honda NSX became my favourite car, thanks to the original Gran Turismo. It also has quite a fascinating history, what with Ayrton Senna involved in the design. Seeing that in one of your videos, Roflwaffle, would be great. This was fantastic, nonetheless, and very interesting - thank you!

I originally found out about the Tommykaira ZZ Gen. 2 from Tomica - the JP Die Cast cars - and to find out that its first generation exists in GT just makes me love this quirky little JP Elise boi even more, the Tommykaira ZZ came in 2 colors from Tomica - red and yellow. I had the yellow one and it's still sold at my local toy store despite it not being made anymore, i got the car along with another goofy boi that sadly isn't in GT i think - that being the Toyota IQ casting from '09.

I couldn’t ever not giggle a bit, driving the xj13 in gtsport’s historic races. There’s only one in the whole world, but here you are driving it. And four of your AI opponents have one as well. I ended up owning three :) I know, there is an accurate replica around. Tiff Needell drove one once.

Oooh 51 minutes. This one's gonna be a banger. Gonna have it in the background while I grind for golds in GT4. If you wouldn't mind, could you cover the story with the F1 cars in GT3. I'm curious as to why the two fastest ones were renamed to "Polyphony 001" and "002" and where the other two went. To this day, I haven't driven the other two.

I think you should make a video about the impact of Gran Turismo on the automotive industry. There's the Vision Gran Turismo cars (and the fact that those cars previewed the design language that those manufacturers would later use like the Bugatti Vision GTs design being used for the Chiron and the Mercedes Vision GTs design being used by the AMG GT etc), there were those unique demos of Gran Turismo that were used at Motor Shows and car dealerships to show off cars from specific manufacturers (that you talked about in your previous video) to prospective buyers, there's the fact that Nissan hired Polyphony Digital to design the multifunction display of the Nissan GTR and there's the GT Academy that led to people like Jann Mardenborough to race for Nissan in real-life motorsports. There's probably more that I don't know about that you could definitely cover in a video. It's amazing how a video game franchise about a particular industry could have such an effect on that very industry. The only other franchise I can think of with a similarly large impact is the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series.

Awesome video as always. If you ever make another video like this then i would love to see you feature the GR.3 VW Beetle. Not only because of the ridiculous nature of a very unusual racecar but also because, in 2021 a fully functional replica was built by the renowned German tuning company JP Performance.

Fun fact: Giorgio Moroder, produced the song "Highway to the danger zone", made famous by Top Gun, often thought to be a song about "going Mach 2 with your hair on fire", but, the lyrics were written by his mechanic (for some reason, that's awesome) and they're about driving a Ferrari at high speeds through winding back roads.
@HansenSebastian

Any proof? Because the lyrics were clearly meant for *_flying_* at over the speed of sound in a jet fighter. The "Danger Zone" in question being enemy territory.

@@HansenSebastian there's a documentary about the making of Top Gun (fun fact: the documentary is actually way longer than the running time of the movie), in which Giorgio himself, explains it. And it's kinda ambiguous, because of things like "preading out her wings" and "begging you to touch and go" ("touch and go" being a term used for aborted landing on an aircraft carrier, like the one Maverick pulls at the beginning, when he goes to save Cougar) but also, you don't, necessarily "rev-up" a jet engine, and the certainly don't have an "overdrive".

The Minolta is a very interesting choice. In motorsport, many people judge the performance of a car, team, or driver by their stats, but it doesn't tell the full story. Gran Turismo celebrates the history of cars. Even the non-winning cars have cool stories to tell. What if the Minolta won Le Mans? Well Gran Turismo is a game so you can give her a happy ending :)

I enjoyed the 2d. I remember having a setup that would mean the other racers would get a headstart only for me to drive by like they were standing still. It was especially funny in online since other players wouldn't realise how slow the take off is you'd get boosted and skip the low revs
