The Case Against Faith (Richard Dawkins)

Science For the Win

Richard Dawkins believes science's ability to admit ignorance is one of its greatest strengths. On the flip side, he proposes that faith remains arrogant and all too certain of its validity without any rational set of proofs. While science can unite people around a common understanding, religion guarantees conflict and division that can never be rationally resolved.

Seriously I can't imagine any unopened minded person watching this video and even getting a grain of sand of an understanding of what he is talking about. He is explaining everything with such detail & such depth that it covers every bit of question that one might ask. Dawkins has been one of my heroes growing up & now at 28 I feel much more in control of my own life, my decisions, my morals because they are mine and based off of my own influences, experiences & inspirations. And I'm happy I am as open minded as I am. Thank you Mr. Dawkins.

The question "why" has not an ounce of meaning. There is no "why" - the universe does not have a "purpose". Life evolved without an ultimate purpose - it just is. Thinking that everything must have a goal, purpose or reason is a failing of the human mind. Believing that inanimate objects, including abstract objects like "life", have agency is a product of dualism and is hardwired into our brains. It was originally a survival trait (is that thing meaning to hurt me or not?) but not now.

Exactly. Our fight (as free-thinkers) is to make Religion 'history' and to lead a healthier, equal and open minded future, not necessarily to prove/disprove the existence of 'god/s' or 'supernatural beings'. In my opinion, religion exists solely as a means to control humans, and the fact that many religious entities are now attacking science just sickens me. If anyone still believes the earth is less than 10,000 years old, they must either be ignorant, blind or plain stupid.

We can apply logic only to certain aspects of music, architecture, painting, religion, etc. That is, and as Louis Khan has stated, only to the measurable aspects of these disciplines, the immeasurable components are really beyond measurement, otherworldly. As brilliant as Hitchens, Dawkins and Sam Harris are, why aren't they clear of the limitations of logic? That no matter how they impress the crowd they are only stating the obvious...

The most ridiculous thing about faith is the god of the gaps. Due to still remaining gaps in our scientific knowledge and understanding...... such as how all this complex organic chemistry came about...... they must always resort to the automatic default position...... of making the false assumption it provides evidence of something even more asinine and improbable. Fundamentally is the issue was Christ the living God, for me the shear fact that against all the massive odds this message spread and the apostles gave their lives for it was a clear testimony. However I accept belief is not for everyone its not easy to accept and it’s easy to discount as fantasy, however just what if this is actually true and Christ was and is the living God it would make a lot of sense!

Because a lot of what is contained in the plethora of Buddhist scriptures are unbacked assertions, many of which are unfalsifiable. Religion isn't simply a belief in a God, or Gods, it's belief in dogmatic assertions, thus Buddhism often falls unceremoniously into the suitcase term: religion.

Please investigate how the Bible really came about. Your brain washing started when you were an infant and you cannot conceive of a life without an overlord controlling your every move and thought. I escaped that environment. You are your own person. I chose to live in reality with science as my guiding force. Facts are facts. I don’t believe in Santa Claus or the tooth fairy either. As an Adult I chose to follow evolution and science and astro physicists. I enjoy my life, act as a good moral person without the fear of some deity hanging over me with threats of torture and death and everlasting hell. That does not sound like an all loving god that I want to follow.

Steve. Lol. Pretty funny stuff. I had to wipe the tears of laughter from my eyes. You sure think very highly of yourself for believing in a fictitious entity over the animals surrounding us. I personally am happy to believe, from scientific facts (you know which-craft stuff like DNA) that we evolved and that we are no more special than the animals that we should care for. Try to study some facts of DNA and the truth shall set you free. 😎. I’m not so conceded to think otherwise. That’s the problem with you ultra religious types. You think the world revolves around you and that minus any facts you know everything. We are part of the world as it’s developing. We are just lucky to have evolved more than the animals around us. I think that we have 98 or 99% the same DNA as chimps. That’s no accident. As Dawkins states so eloquently, DNA can be traced throughout all living matter. Who’s the idiot here? One who believes in science with facts to support it or the one who believes in something never seen or heard from. No evidence what so ever except from delusional folks like you, with visions and voices, who would rather believe in ghosts and displace responsibility to a deity instead of taking responsibility for yourself. All written in a book by illiterate camel herders and passed down thru time with adjustments from the church to control the people under their control. Try to study the Bible, Old Testament , New Testament and the millions of contradictions in each. They are great stories messaged by church to fit the narrative of the time as science has disproven their stories. Remember when the sun revolved around the earth. And how the church fought to keep that narrative until it could no longer be ignored? Millions more like that. Since you started this I’ll finish with, I’m done arguing with the ignorant and delusional. You can go on your happy way and believe what ever you want. You may want to look out for flying teapots out there too, just as likely as your god. Who by the way is the latest of some 3000 over history. But this one is the one? Laughable.

Sometimes I have to wonder myself where we are going with our current level of intelligence. As for evolution, it’s taken millions of years, so our short blink of history will not allow us to see evolution in our timeframe. But if you study evolution, it’s theory, as it started, is correct. It’s now established on the evolution of species. DNA studies throughly support this. It’s truly incredible how they have found this and studied it. I would truly love to travel back millions of years and watch it in accelerated time to see it. As for squirrels doing calculus, I learned it but can’t say I can still do it. So maybe they are smarter than I.

I think a book of his hand is the magic of reality.| There he describes 3 meanings of magic: The kind of magic with which one would be able to turn a pumpkin into a carriage. The kind of magic of the illusionists. And finally the kind of magic which is related to the awe imposed on a humble man by the sheer incomprehensibility of reality which is surrounding him, such in poetic meaning. The latter definition is his favourite. This one should also do with the term faith. One is the kind of belief in the absence of proof. One is the sum of all rituals which constitute one of the world's branches of religions. And the third one which is the one which really matters is the kind which tells a conscious and intelligent being that what it has predicted about the future is correct and that it should allocate precious resources in that area, well knowing that its very existence might be at peril in case of failure. The latter is my favourite ofcourse. I think mr Dawkins plays with all 3 definitions to make his point. I find that unfair. He should stick with one definition. Everybody knows this cheesy remark: predicting is hard, especially when it is about the future. Then there is the definition of intelligence measured by the capability of predicting future outcomes, given certain parameters. So, inadequate as we are, as humans, we need to have trust or by an other word faith, that what we embark on is meaningful and should improve our position. If doubt wins over trust or faith, the journey would not be started and we would remain stagnant. But where is God? My answer would be that to have faith is the same as to have faith in God, since one is not suppost to have any image of God in the first place . So faith with respect to whatever pervades all of existence is the same as faith. So faith is extremely precious. So naturally one would want to convey this notion to offspring by using meaningful stories, kept alive by strong rituals. One should however remember that the rituals themselves are more like a conveyor of the message, not the message itself. The ritual is complex, the message is simple and elegant like e=mc2 I end my remark here.

No, I dont see intelligent design in nature. In fact there are several biological designs that are inefficient, unnecessarily complicated or even detrimental to its owner. Even we primates can come up with superior designs. I can give examples if you like. Trees, oxygen, bees, pollination basically the "circle of life" is already sufficiently explained by evolution. Like many atheists, he was raised a Christian and believed the fairy tales until reason and science opened his eyes. What puzzles me is why there is never any reference to the psychology of belief? How are beliefs are formed? There is some mention of the correlation between beliefs of parents and beliefs of children, but why does no one mention the factors behind the change of beliefs who were raised in a particular faith? How many people have given up beliefs they learned as children? And what were the reasons? For example, I was raised as a fundamental Christian, a belief that it took me 30 years to abandon. Why did it take me so long? What were the deciding factors? I can speak to the emotional turmoil that I went through to abandon those beliefs. I can still remember the tipping point for me: As I was reaching adulthood, I made a resolution that I would always try to "incline toward" the position that seemed most likely, based on logic and evidence, regardless of how it made me feel. I practiced as faithfully as I could the critical thinking strategy for any unproven assertion or claim: "How do I know this is true? What is the evidence for it? Does it make sense?" If the evidence or supporting logic was lacking, I resolved to abandon the belief (not always easy!). Sometimes I had to search further to be convinced. This approach forced me to abandon Christianity. Now, how did my belief originate in the first place? My mother was a strong influence, but once I was converted (I accepted Jesus as my personal savior at her knee when I was 5.) I followed that up with church attendance - even attending Wed nite prayer meetings! (I was puzzled why all the sick and shut-ins that we prayed for never seemed to benefit. Hmm!). What bothers me is there is never any scientific reasoning given about why such absurd beliefs are accepted in the first place. A person doesn't just sit down and say, "Hmm! I guess I'll believe in God!"

cmitch3087 well you’re view is not exactly conclusive. You see much of science is unknown or theories and through science we develop our best explanations based on the evidence available or that we can understand. Science continues to remain inconclusive in many regards and raises even more questions. We therefore have faith ultimately in their interpretations but equally we have to accept it not fact until proven and all understanding could yet be wrong certainly in cosmology and quantum science. So we do have to have faith in science. Similarly for many there is some evidence to support religious belief and it is that faith that God exists and is the explanation for everything that is yet not disproved by others opinion or fact. These debates will last all our lifetimes it is where you place your faith that will determine your views. One major reason that science has to admit its ignorance is that it has adopted a stance like that as its modus operandi. Science starts from a position that nothing is known for certain so that it can pretend that its methodology is revealing a more certain truth about the fundamental nature of reality. But such a stance is only possible in the first place if it excludes 'a priori' any other known source of knowledge and understanding. Here Richard is dealing with religious faith which even if a legitimate target for a reasoned view of reality if rejected outright throws out many other possibilities about the fundamental nature of reality - which Richard believes science is uncovering. These possibilities are quite fundamental to questions about our experience within this so-called 'physical' universe. For example; that behind the; 'faith-based' religions may lie a truth - that 'There is indeed' a non-physical source layer beyond our perception of presently known 'physical' levels. Another possibility is that 'consciousness' may be intrinsic to what is termed 'matter'.discarded, in the present stance. A science which posits that all faith-based religious ideas and concepts must be discarded and ridiculed outright - may be throwing out the very 'further than physical' answers it purports to be seeking!
@alivation

No, you are free to ask these questions in a science framework, but you need to be able to come up with a way of testing your hypothesis objectively and repeatedly (experiment) in order to either reject your hypothesis or add support for it. Otherwise, if it cannot be tested now or in the future it falls into the domain of faith or fiction or superstition.

When I say that I have had more theology crammed down my throat than most, that is an understatement. There is an obvious difference in angry wrathful old testament God, super outreaching but strangely irrational New Testament God, back to being angry and wrathful, but still a centralizing Muslim God. Their words were written by flesh and blood human beings separated by centuries and millennia, and then translated by other men at different times. The books chosen for the final cut were selected by aristocrats and well-to-due clergymen at Nicea. I'm not dumping on any one religion, but rather suggesting yes, there are plenty of contradictions in the allocation of separate books codified by the religious hierarchy of the day. Therein lies a breakdown of unquestioned belief.

Thus, that we can explain how these things might have come into existence without God means that we don't need to resort to supernatural explanations.

Faith is believing, when you have absolutely no reason to think it's true. It is merely a wish. With faith, any potentiality is possible, and no potentiality is possible. Every reality exists, and nothing real exists. Everything is genuine, and nothing is genuine. ALL at the _exact same time._ Faith is a game for children and the foolish.

You know, I was raised as an evangelical Christian, "saved" and "born again" at 12. I know all about the emotional manipulation, and I'm not swayed by sentiment or arguments from emotion. No matter how warm and fuzzy and tear-jerky something is - it doesn't mean it's true. If you haven't got objective evidence or logical arguments to present your case for God, then you're wasting my time.

If you don't understand, then I feel there might not be hope for you. No offense to what you believe, but his explanation against faith is pretty straight forward, and anyone with an open mind would understand that faith is nothing more than believing something based on NO evidence. I believe God exists because I know it in my heart (when really that feeling is only there because your parents, or whatever other religious figure that has crossed your path has planted that seed.)
