Join critically-acclaimed author and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and world-renowned theoretical physicist and author Lawrence Krauss as they discuss biology, cosmology, religion, and a host of other topics.
The authors will also discuss their new books. Dawkins recently published The Magic of Reality: How We Know What's Really True, an exploration of the magic of discovery embodied in the practice of science. Written for all age groups, the book moves forward from historical examples of supernatural explanations of natural phenomena to focus on the actual science behind how the world works.

Krauss's latest book, A Universe from Nothing: Why There is Something Rather than Nothing, explains the scientific advances that provide insight into how the universe formed. Krauss tackles the age-old assumption that something cannot arise from nothing by arguing that not only can something arise from nothing, but something will always arise from nothing.
Founded in 2008, the ASU Origins Project is a university-wide transdisciplinary initiative aimed at facilitating cutting edge research and inquiry about origins questions, enhancing public science literacy, and improving science education. Since its inception, the Origins Project has brought the world's leading scientists, including Nobel Prize winners, to Tempe to explore origins questions. The Origins Project has hosted workshops and public events that have focused on questions as fundamental as the origin of the universe, how life began, the origins of human uniqueness, and the origins of morality.

Atheism is not an alternative to religion, it's simply a rejection of theism. It is a philosophy without content. Saying it's a religion is like saying abstinence is a sex position. Quoting theology isn't going to convince those who reject theism in the first place.

I more or so see it like the word "gay". originally it had a different meaning. But now its loosely used, and has a different meaning (and is likewise controversial). its more or so a word with the same spelling and slightly different meaning now, (a homonym). Hence I'm an atheist, but with the looser more modern take. So next time there is a "fire", "fire" your weapon.

It's a big tent philosophy, which means atheists tend to disagree with each other about philosophy all the time. Anyone could be a Realist or an Idealist, these are philosophical labels. But the meaning of these labels don't tend to change, they still mean basically the same thing they always have.

I was a believer simply because my parents took me to church and raised me as such... I became an atheist in 9th grade and stayed that way for 14 years. I "found" God as they say sometime after that. I struggled very much with faith because like most of you on here I am a critical thinker, analytical, cynical and question most things. Because of this I have a much more mature faith then when I was a child. I sought out "truth" in several religions. I enjoy watching video's like this because I want to challenge myself, I do not simply want to believe in something just because its what make me feel warm and fuzzy. I choose to believe because in my life it's what seems to be most logical. Some deductive reasoning brought me here. But I am who I am so I will not lie to myself, faith does not come easy for me. The doubts will always be there for me and I am okay with that. No need for all the fighting on here, everybody in this comment section is friends with or loves someone who is an atheist or believer. Mutual respect.

There is Grace to be had is almost all denominations of Christianity and I have no doubt there are those in Heaven whom never stepped foot in a Catholic church. Yes, we have the sacraments and the Bible teaches to participate in them in order to be in more perfect union. I agree. However God can claim whomever he wants and there are holy and righteous people that will make it, maybe they go to purgatory first, who knows.

Outside of his Bio Lab, Dawkins is just another guy with an opinion, same as you or i. Because he ( or any other scientist) is an expert in their science, that does not necessarily mean their views have any more validity than anyone else's. In fact Dawkins has been spectacularly wrong in so many things. From McCain, to Assange, to the fake Trump/Russia collusion etc. It baffles me that his fans ignore these blunders and still believe him when he tells them his views on the BIG questions. The guy lives in a bubble of privilege, and has little idea of the real world.

@Xavier Foisse for one atheists don't think the universe has arisen from nothing, no one has ever really made that claim in any concrete manner. (if you are referring to the big bang that is an evidence based theory garnered by scientist much smarter than me looking at stars, it in no way is stated to be the start of everything in reality but people seem to have that conception of it) atheists directly claim they have no idea how the universe was formed and through exploring the universe and finding what bit of evidence that's available to us, we have found no reason or proof that would suggest gods exist. doesn't mean they don't, it just means the universe in our current understanding can exist without them two; why the heck are you comparing flat earthers to atheists? i don't even know a good enough analogy for that one. you couldn't have picked two things furthest apart if you tried (im sure someone is going to read this and try and one up that now) Atheism isn't a religion, its not even a belief. in fact its an expulsion of belief (if you want to get into the nitty gritty of semantics knock yourself out, i'm not biting that hook) the whole point of atheism is pretty much rejecting magic, gods, and the supernatural as no evidence is available to definitively prove any of it exists (subjective evidence and anecdotes generally aren't good enough to prove anything, provable means testable and repeatable)

Thank you, Dr. Dawkins for articulating my feelings about the religious brainwashing of young children. My mother was a "devout Catholic", and started pumping religious BS into my mind as soon as I could understand language. I was a quick learner, so I got started early, and became so proficient in the mythology that I was selected by adults to teach other children when I was 12. However, that is precisely when my mind began to question things which I was told, and I started gravitating towards reality, a state I acquired around the time I was 13. I call what was done to me as a child, "Soul Rape", which as a Catholic, isn't as bad as it could have been. To this day, and I am 76 and am a fact, data, science-based person today, religious reflexive thoughts enter my mind. You used the word "brainwashing", which is precisely the word I use, as it aptly describes the process and the life-long damage done. Don't get me started on organized religion as a whole. Great discussion,

So well expressed! My being a daughter of Evangelical Fundamentalist Southern Baptist missionaries to (former) Belgian Congo in the 60's gives me one THOUSAND percent perspective on the evils done by religion. The denial of logic by all religions is mind jarring. That we should NOT use our innate search for truth is SO very incomprehensible to me. The slaps and whippings I received for "doubting" the WORD OF GOD are memories still with me. I am 80 years of age and still loving to learn from giants such as Richard Dawkins and his ilk.

@@100_1OO________1 Logic is not immaterial. Nature implements a subset of it in the classical world. As far as abstracts are concerned the application of logic always requires an existence proof, first. Why? Because in propositional logic (A is a property of the elements of S and not A is a property of the elements of S) is trivially true if S is the empty set. And once you have that, you can prove anything about the empty set, which makes logic completely useless UNLESS you prove first that your set S contains at least one element. Did you pay any attention in math class? I don't think you did. ;-)

I take the Bible as it is meant to be taken: For example: "Adam" and "Eve" of which, if one researches, turns out that "Adam" means "Man" (i.e. that of Mankind) and "Eve" as that of Man or the Mother of all women: And therefore the Bible is ageless and it describes you and me (Mankind) as all Adam and Eves, and the "Taking Serpent" is metaphor for "Temptation" and thus the talking snake within each one of us that tempts us after the age of our innocence into all sorts of awful things! However, I do take the New Testament literally as it is meant to be taken, Because I recognise the words of Yeshua as the word of "Truth" of which no man or woman can separate me or tear me from! ... :))

However, this is what i know through study: The first three Gospels: That of Matthew Mark and Luke are “synoptic” and were thus eyewitness accounts of which were collated to form the first three Gospels: And the explanation of how this was achieved can be found at the beginning of the Gospel of Luke. The Gospel of John is a “narrative” and was therefore eye-witnessed recorded and written by the disciple of Yeshua, John! Of which can be seen and noted at John 21; 24! So please do not let anyone mislead you otherwise with unsubstantiated evidence or in any other which way but truth! I was lucky enough to meet Lawrence Krauss this weekend and hear him speak and every time I hear him speak I get a better picture of not only the universe but also why there is such misconceptions about it in religious and faith based circles. Those that are religious do NOT like new information and what little new information they allow in is already a hundred years old because it takes them that long to adapt it so that it fits into their beliefs and can reinterpret what they find in the bible and other scriptures in order to let it fit the new information. For a very long time the earth was the center of the known univers and what is known for sure was paultry. Just a few planets and everything else were just dots poked into the shroud that lay beyond and I guess what lay beyond was the kingdom of heaven. God was easy to accept and our place was the universe and it was ALL about us. As Krauss says, 85 years ago what was known about the universe was that it was just our galaxy and it was fixed, permanent in time and unchanged - THAT is something that with some effort can be attributed to a god, ALMOST. Major mental gymnastics need to be done to reconcile that information but I can see how it could be done. Now we know there are BILLIONS of galaxies and pretty much know that the universe had a specific start and is spreading out forever so how can you reconcile that with the idea of a god? You ignore it or push what you think is god out beyond it. To conceit from the earth being the universe to accepting that we are the smallest spec of dust in relationship to the universe is impossible to believe that a god made the universe for us. And yet people work very very very hard to convince themselves of just that. Religion is based on a lack of knowledge and before people had the excuse that the information was not available. Now there is so much information available that there is NO excuse to still believe there is a god that created a universe for us so the only way people can do it is to simply NOT ACCEPT the information and purposefully completely change the concept of god to encompass it. To believe in a god is to lie to yourself. To believe there is a god is to choose ignorance. To have a god is to deny reality in favor of something that doesn't scare you. God is just a concept and a concept is something we use to encompass a great many thing into a single thing to make it easier to understand.

I WANT KRAUSS AS MY BANK MANAGER....something from nothing
@ole555
@ole555 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, you are much closer to reality than you think. Did you ever wonder where the never-ending inflation is coming from? Banks do indeed fabricate "money" out of nothing - only they do it to inflate their own worth in the form of debt obligations. This is in fact what happens every time you go and get a loan; They actually create your debt out of nothing. It is a perfectly legalized way to manipulate the money supply, known as 'fractional reserve banking', which is a very dirty and well-kept but could be regarded the most important secret in the world. It is effectively a scam which defrauds you of your wealth. The U.S. government even recently used the corona situation as a pretext to reduce the reserve requirements on some loans to zero. If you want to know how it works, watch the first chapter of Peter Joseph's 'Zeitgeist: Addendum' here, and prepare to have your mind blown: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpPZdKuDm8h-rJY

@@ole555 Everyone needs to know this. It is indeed one of the most kept secret. the corona situation shows what politics actually is: brainwash people into allowing their wealth and rights to be taken away. Not just the money value. It gets used to force people to buy masks. This is greatly abused and the reason why it is widely endorsed despite the people advocating against it at first when they were not available suddenly changed their mind. their are other equally abused concepts that are as dangerous as a forced inflation. Racism and Society issues get abused the same way. They cast fear of persecution into the mind of minorities to use words like racist to discredit people when they made sense. Thats also where all the rape accusations of famous people suddenly come from. All politics is is brainwashing people to like their own oppression. As example, in Germany you get brainwashed to not be opposed to refugees even if they commit crimes. The government makes an active effort to get more into the country. Why? because they get lots of money from the state that come feom taxes that end up in the hands of people owning the real estate they live in and so on. thats why left wing politics tries to make not working people get more money. Its essentially a way to rob the tax money by controlling where it ends up in the end. Same with climate change. All trash is made by companies selling it with everything you buy. When u throw it away, it gets sold by companies or dumped in the sea for financial reason. Same with gases. they all get produced by producing products to be sold. But people are brainwashed to think they as consumers are damaging the enviroment or the air by driving cars. All that to push products and laws that restrict your freedom in way that benefits the companies responsible. Essentially everything gets twisted and used to take money away. The problem is that it can only be stopped by enough people realizing it, but that will never happen.

@@freddan6fly First of all, how is "the alternative" worse? You mean an _actually government-issued_ currency without a profit motive behind its control and without debt directly built into its very creation would somehow make the world worse? Or are you maybe just positing the old propaganda canard that the central banks are "stabilizing" the economy and protecting us from the business cycle? Second of all, if that is really what the countries are trying to do, they seem to have incredibly bad aim, considering that the effective buying power of a unit of currency has only dropped precipitously for maybe centuries all over the industrialized world. I guess government economists are just too stupid to simply look at a graph of the absolute index of the official poverty line over time and see how wrong they (and you) are. The whole monetary scheme is quite obviously designed to systematically benefit the people who don't need loans and fleece the people who are dependent on them. The debt-currency scam should be the easiest part of it to understand.

Matt Dillahunty who I listen to on occasion has not made the statement, " there is no God"... Of course that does not stop anyone from making whatever statement they choose... You ask for evidence for us being created by God...For me that proof is in science! I do not believe that life can come into existence without a designer!... Observing the functions in the cell for example the molecular motors! I do not believe that they could make themselves! they need an intelligent designer!... Their functions are planned with a purpose and they are intricately designed to carry out their specific functions...as with all life! As we know all the components would have to be complete and not placed together over a period of time. They would also have to be placed in a specific sequence to function or the cell would die! My statement, "you will not be saved by man!" means that we are living in very perilous and unpredictable times! Man ruling over man has failed dismally...we have never been successful and never will be in ruling over ourselves! History has proven that thus far! The mega rich rulers of this world are creating wars and using us as slaves to do their bidding!....93 percent of the world live in poverty, so hardly a success story! Kirk Bushell You must be joking. He has the credentials of a scientist and is a scientist. "Clinton Richard Dawkins FRS FRSL (born 26 March 1941) is an English ethologist, evolutionary biologist, and writer. He is an emeritus fellow of New College, Oxford, and was the University of Oxford's Professor for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 until 2008. Dawkins first came to prominence with his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, which popularised the gene-centred view of evolution and introduced the term meme. In 1982, he introduced into evolutionary biology the influential concept that the phenotypic effects of a gene are not necessarily limited to an organism's body, but can stretch far into the environment. This concept is presented in his book The Extended Phenotype. In 2006, he founded the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science. He studied zoology at Balliol College, Oxford, graduating in 1962; while there, he was tutored by Nobel Prize-winning ethologist Nikolaas Tinbergen. He continued as a research student under Tinbergen's supervision, receiving his MA and DPhil degrees by 1966, and remained a research assistant for another year. Tinbergen was a pioneer in the study of animal behaviour, particularly in the areas of instinct, learning and choice; Dawkins's research in this period concerned models of animal decision-making. Dawkins was awarded a Doctor of Science degree by the University of Oxford in 1989. He holds honorary doctorates in science from the University of Huddersfield, University of Westminster, Durham University, the University of Hull, the University of Antwerp, and the University of Oslo, and honorary doctorates from the University of Aberdeen, Open University, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and the University of Valencia. He also holds honorary doctorates of letters from the University of St Andrews and the Australian National University (HonLittD, 1996), and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1997 and a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2001. He is one of the patrons of the Oxford University Scientific Society." Wikipedia. Don't be absurd.

So what we see in the night-sky would make no sense at all if we would be a square or flat or pyramid shaped. So we can literally SEE us revolving around the sun...long before we started to take photos of our planet from the distance. Even some ancient greeks figured that out...with two sticks. - And no...I personally have not been to space...but I also haven't been on top of the mount Everest or seen a giant squid...but I don't have any reason to believe that everyone who HAS been there or seen one lied to me. So people have been to space...and what they found there matches the things I can test from earth..while NONE of the things I can test on earth matches the idea of a flat plane...at least not with a basic understanding of physics. And I know that flat earthers believe in loads of stuff they can't see...like dome or a magic magnetic mountain or an Ice ring or a second sun or other stuff. - And no I haven't proven it myself...(if you don't count watching a sunrise) but I have not seen anyone disproving it...while not failing at elementary school physics.

I was hurt and heart broken when a very big problem occurred in my marriage seven months ago, between me and my wife . so terrible that she took the case to court to file a divorce. She said that she cannot continue to stay with me again, and she said "I don't love you anymore" So she took her things out of the house and made me and my children passed through several emotional pain. I tried all my possible means to get her back, after much begging, but all to no avail. and she confirmed it that she has made her decision, and she never wanted to see me again. So one evening, as i was coming back from work ,i meant an old friend of mine who asked of my wife .So i explained every thing to him, so he told me that the only way i can get my wife back, is to visit a prophet to know what is really behind this issue, because it has really worked for other people too. So i never believed in spell, but i had no other choice than to follow his advice. Then he gave me the Email address of the prophet. prophetehiagwina @gmail .com. I do agree that it is hard to grasp the time scale. Recently I was explaining to my 11 years old daughter how the megafauna has died. I told her that this happened not long time ago, about 10000 years ago. She directly asked me what do I mean by "not long ago". It was an interesting question. For almost every time scale I can take it was not long ago as in comparison with 13 billion of the universe, 4.5 billion of planet earth, 64 millions of dinosaurs being gone to heaven :-) or even 3 millions of human evolution megafauna died just a moment ago. My daughter did understand this concept and I felt sorry for all those creationists who didn't have somebody to explain to them the world.

In the Q&A session, someone young man asked tremulously if there was some way to disseminate ''this information'', more widely(meaning what these two scientists had been discussing for the last hour or so), and I am amazed at the poverty of this question. It seems that the obvious answer should be to bring up children to become readers of books. You may attend as many lectures of these and other eminent scientists as you like, but unless you have read their books, you will never truly grasp what they are talking about. The fundamental problem with many schools is that they deny children the kind of education early on that will open doors for them into the two important sciences of evolutionary biology and physics. There are socio-political forces working against imparting a sound education to young children, as opening their minds to science will threaten the status quo of societies based on what I would call "dumbism".

@Michael Brown It's quite funny to read what you have to say. How do you feel about other religions? There are over 4000 of them, so why is it that the one you are raised with is the only true one? And why do people, no matter what religion, also believe that their god or gods are the only true ones? Have you considered to open your eyes and use your brain, instead of relying on what other people are telling you? As an example something that was written down thousands of years ago in a book. Back then, science was in its infancy and we knew barely anything about the world - which is why there are so many stories and ideas that don't make sense, that we can easily disprove with modern science - not that you believe in any real science of course. Yet you probably enjoy the internet - does your god get the credit for that one too? You people sure are interesting, quite delusional, but interesting.

It’s fascinating how different people think about their surroundings. I remember from a very young age questioning the religion I was brought up in and thinking wow you really believe things without evidence. Yet people continue to this day to go their entire lives without doing so. While enjoying the benefits directly of people who realized how the world really works. I wish evolution would speed up on some people.

I grew up without religious indoctrination. In Germany, Berlin. My father...a American soldier...my mother Irish-German. Of course I had religious studies in school ( you had to pick the Evangelical or Catholic denomination ) and found it extremely interesting in a historical sense...nothing more. While in Berlin and young I would climb over fenced areas into " protected areas " of nature. Of course I could've got in trouble because it is illigal and some species aren't " human " friendly 🤣 as a young moron I figured a switzer pocket knife stuck via ducktape on the tip of a stick was enough protection... But ok, what I wanted to explain is...individuals that spend hours in nature observing it and really thinking about its mechanism will come to evolution naturally. I did. Ants were the most obvious...from them I learned that they all looked similar but have different habitats and strengths/weaknesses. I also was fascinated by fungi and plants and the many adaptions.... Years later when confronted with Darwin's ideas I instantly thought there's really nothing special here because no other explination makes any sense....then I started reading about Alexander Van Humboldt, Alfred Wallace, Thomas Huxley, Asa Gray and from there went into the modern synthesis of Evolutionary theory ( Theodosius Dobhzansky, Ernst Mayr, Julian Huxley, Sidney Brenner, Christian De Duve, Ronald Fisher etc ) and then into the what I call extensions of Evolutionary theory like Lynn Morgulis / Endosymbiosis...Carl Woese and his work with 16sRna & Phylogenetics...Barbara McClintock and Transposons...Frederick Griffith and Horizontal Gene Transfer...Quantum Biology etc. Most individuals have zero and I mean NULL clue about these subjects. It takes hours of study to absorb the evidence, mechanisms and history of Evolutionary biology and Genetics. So when somebody tries to tell me Evolution is just a "theory" and God did it I laugh and tell them sure...now please provide some evidence. Of course there is none. Historians are all over the place but thru further scrutiny I realized they have NOTHING. Christian apologists use philosophical arguments that lack often critical thinking skills and completely disregard the arguments of many non religious individuals ( best presented in " The Portable Atheist " by Christopher Hitchens or " Doubt: A History " by Jennifer Michael Hecht ) without ever doing so convincingly... I took my time really trying to see why so many believe in religious arguments...but failed. Compared to modern science and philosophy...the religious perspective has really one big problem= Methodological Naturalism. When one human being somehow manages to present an repeatable experiment proving there is SOMETHING supernatural ( meaning outside/separate of the natural material world ) convincingly....i might rethink my position. Until then...i prefer the beauty and explanatory power of modern science.

I asked myself how could anyone be stupid enough to be religious in a modern world. I found the shocking answer: most people believe what they want to believe because they like it to be that way. the idea comforts them and is tied to the identity these people have given themself. Thats why you get irrational emotional reactions from them. Proving them wrong gets perceived as attacking the persons identity. When its tied to the identity, taking it away gets perceived as a threat.Thats what causes their response. I observe the same phenomenon in other matters. When you disprove something that is emotionally tied to person, you wont get rational behaviour. If I call out that someone has been lied to by a friend, instead of thanking me I get personally attacked ? Why thought? its completely irrational, yet it is so common. its because the brain forces them to act that way to prevent the painful realization to take place. Lying to themself to avoid the unpleasant feeling of the consequences. For me, its the kind of behavior that makes me the most furious because it prevents people from aquiring knowledge that is actually useful. because most people sadly value a delusional feeling more than the truth without realizing that they harm themselfs.

The purpose of science is a continuous study of our natural surroundings, gather evidence, and evaluate the evidence to build our knowledge of the world we live in. If the knowledge does not provide concrete answers (as an example for simplicity sake, the sky is blue), then we are left with assumptive reasoning. This is why science should always allow for open-mindedness when it comes to topics that are not concrete. Nothing should be an exception to this way of thinking. It's ok if we subscribe to a belief that is based on some level of reasonable assumptions, but if we do not leave room to being open-minded, we can eventually find ourselves defending something with irrational bias. The evolution belief/paradigm should be no different. We all should take the time to be open minded and consider a different paradigm/belief without scourging the other side. Especially when the evolution paradigm dead-ends at three of the most important unexplainable pivotal moments in time... a) nothing in space turning into something b) something dead turning into something living c) something living turning into the mind-bending genetic & dna-filled complexity known as man. When the only answer to those questions is if given enough time, those things can occur, that isn't even remotely an answer that should convince anyone to automatically subscribe to that theory. A genuine discussion and debate with open-minded people needs to be had to evaluate real evidence. I think what reasonable people will find without me infusing my religious beliefs would be there are way too many assumptions being made to stand solely on the evolutionary paradigm. If everyone could set aside your personal experiences with man whether in a church or outside the walls of a church in a science forum for a moment, deconstruct what you've learned, and actually rely on evidence, we'd reasonably find room to consider another possibility other than the evolution belief. Take the journey with an open mind...
