I took a chance a while back and put Von Essen on my Lenin. In my first salvo I deleted a full health Charles Martel so I've stuck with Von Essen ever since. Combined with high level Cunningham and Jaujard commanders, it seems to work well for me.

This guy's seeing some action in my navy. He's running my Russian cruisers and inspiring my Hyde build. Like you say in the video, there's no way to gauge his impact on ship performance. I've got him at 14/3 so his base trait is nearing maxed. Might slot him in on my Norm Scott build and see if I notice any difference. I've played those American cruisers a lot so if there's any line where I might be able to discern a difference it would probably be in those ships. Great info and entertainment as always...enjoyed watching!

Generally totally agree on von Essen’s trait. What I don’t agree on is putting him on the German cruisers. I have more pen issues than bounces, due to the German AP hitting hard but with weak pen. An angle adds an armour multiplier even if it doesn’t reach a bounce angle, and that makes my German AP shatter before I even reach bounce chance angle.

It become more interesting when you add von Essen's ability to ships with enhanced pen to begin with. Stacking him with Hyde for oddball German BBs like Odin or Scharnhorst also should prove interesting. One problem is sussing out what WG means by 'enhanced penetration.' Shell normalization was a thing with AP shells, but how far WG carries it is the question. They do use these sorts of hidden stats as game balancing mechanics, but how they apply it is an unknown.
@time4anewsystem4523 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you. WGing is known for shadow adjusting both perks and ship/tank specs to keep a balance. The say that they don't with ships which I'm calling BS. That's why I don't spend a lot on this game and never will because of there tactics
@davefinfrock33243 жыл бұрын
@@time4anewsystem452 The really obvious stuff they usually don't fool around with. Looking up belt armor of capital ships isn't hard. However, they often leave things out like belt inclination or even multiple armor decks (KGV). They also don't show everything in the viewer even though it might be there (Cesare's bow). Throw in stuff like armor metallurgy and shell construction and you have lots of esoteric areas that you can fiddle with for balance. At the end of the day, this isn't a simulation, so you shouldn't think of it as one--at least not a very strict one.

The degrees seem like not a lot to add. But putting it in a percentage puts it in perspective compared to other commander traits. I wonder the percentage of shots that ricochet vs shots that shatter that could be helped by increased pen multiplier vs increased pen angles.
@TbullGaming3 жыл бұрын
The big percentage increase inspirations that come to mind are this one, al Atago and the reduction in enhanced visibility commanders (violet, lemon and whatever the anime BB one is that just came out). There are probably a couple others, but when it comes to having an influence on the build, the high percentage ones have to be taken seriously.

I think it'll work best on brawler ships.. your going to be close so dispersion builds wont make as much of a difference at 10km n its more likely they'll be angling sharper when closer.. so widening that gap for shells to get through should benefit.

When he came out I was thinking he could help, you get a captain who’s good at keeping an angle you could punch him with that perk. Ever little bit of an edge is good! Look at traverse speed 1.2 degree is a big boost now Dmitry is a 4 degree boost so……
@Notthecobracommander3 жыл бұрын
Maybe a good option on the ships that have smaller calipers like the Florida and the King George v. I have found that Commander abilities that fix weaknesses of vessels tend to be better than ones that improve strengths. Ie reload on the new American battleship line 34 sec is way too slow.
@TbullGaming3 жыл бұрын
That's the age-old debate: whether to boost weaknesses or enhance strengths?
@alaskanfire6525 Жыл бұрын
I would apply the same logic I do in real world and coaching. On a scale of 1-10 If you have a strength that’s a 7-8 and a weakness that’s a 3; if you raised one by 2 it makes you a 9-10 and the other goes to a 5. In the business world nobody pays top dollar for average. But an 8, 9 or 10 is the best at a category. In the game it may be worthy to raise the 3, but having a category at a 10 still seems very beneficial. Excellent videos sir.

Google "WoWs wiki penetration" and find the chart towards the bottom. The PC data is all we have to go by, but my experience strongly backs up the idea that they do have the enhanced values

Any thoughts on madden vs the reload commanders
@TbullGaming3 жыл бұрын
My advice on Madden is to put on Jellicoe making sure that build has no effect on reload time/traverse, and then put on Madden again making sure that his inspirations don't affect those two values. Check the stats between the two builds, and see if the change in performance warrants using him. The two or three times I've checked that, it didn't strike me as worthwhile
@danje40013 жыл бұрын
How does this interact with armour pen perks or do they need to be regarded as completely separate entities?
@TbullGaming3 жыл бұрын
Different factors. When dealing with a perk like this we are trying to covert ricochets into penetrations, and with the AP pen boosts we are trying to convert shattered shells into penetrations.

Alright so, I've been on board with this theory for a while. My von essen is only a 8 and I don't have the Halloween Commander to double this park up. However I did take two things from this video. One, didn't realize how drastic the sticky shot perk is for US heavy cruisers and I would like to know where you got the numbers for the penetration angles on the US and UK cruisers. Two, if I see Tbull on the high sea with a tier v-vii US or UK heavy cruiser, there will be no such thing as angling against his terrifyingly accurate AP. 🤣

I can never seem to get turret pens... I know I'm doing something wrong, but no clue what.
@TbullGaming3 жыл бұрын
If you're shooting a battleship it will usually take battleship caliber guns, if a cruiser it will take cruiser guns, etc. What vertical angle the turret face presents also matters. Soviet and french turret faces are nearly flat, and make them easier to knock. Japanese, Italian, American tend to be really angled and harder to knock.
@Wigmore723 жыл бұрын
@@TbullGaming thanks for the reply. So I should stick to HE even with heavy cruisers when shooting BBs? Also, guys seem to be able to smash me, even from distance no matter what BB I'm in, even when bow tanking, but I can't do the same. When aiming at bow, Where should I be be trying to place my shots? And when aiming at broad, do I aim waterline or edge of deck?

This is a good explanation. In my opinion, Yamamoto is the better inspiration for boosting AP performance. However, I do use von Essen as my commander on the Leningrad. Burn it down, criss cross, velocious, reaching out, Sims, Trubs. Plays like a downtiered Tashkent. Best regards.
@TbullGaming3 жыл бұрын
I would love to see a breakdown between the two. There are some instances where Dimitri would be better, and some where Yamamoto would be better. I would suspect favoring Yamamoto would be better in general, as you suggest. Currently I have my US set up with Dimitri and Mikawa, and both the UK lights and heavies plus German heavies set up with Yamamoto/Dimitri

@pedro it's where all the members meet once a month, we come to an agreement on a Target from The Blue team ( usually it's DD players that Rush cruisers at point blank range, or BB players that put their shipping reverse and set the controller down for first 10 minutes of the game, or cruisers that sail broadside to every single BB that they can see.) We hunt them down, revoke their duck flags and then sacrifice them to the wargaming Gods. 👌
