The Case For Edible Insects | NYT Opinion

This is part three in “We’re Cooked,” a three-part series from NYT Opinion. Watch part one here: • Meet the People Gettin... , and part two here: • See the True Cost of Y...
Mealworm soup. Chile-lime cricket tacos. Charred avocado tartare with ant larvae.
In the West, edible insects have long been the domain of food adventurers, with few other takers - even as billions of people elsewhere on the planet count insects as a part of their traditional diets.
But as we explore in the Opinion Video above, a growing tribe of environmentalists, academics and entrepreneurs are arguing that edible insects must enjoy a wider acceptance to help create a more sustainable global food system and save the planet.
It’s a matter of numbers. The world’s population is booming. So, too, is agricultural production to meet the growing demand for food. Yet agriculture, particularly the production of meat, is a big driver of environmental harm.
Scientists have warned that unless we make major adjustments to the kinds of food we eat and how we produce it, we have no chance of meeting our climate goals. A change in dietary patterns, especially reduced demand for meat, would help relieve pressure on the environment and mitigate global warming.
That’s where insects come in. Though the research is still nascent, the early evidence suggests that some edible insects offer a more environmentally sustainable alternative to some conventional livestock. Insects also offer tremendous potential as pet food and a feed source for conventional livestock.
This video is the third in a series of short films we published this month examining problems with the food system. The first one explored the environmental harm of agriculture and the powerful lobby in the United States that has fought to maintain the status quo. The second exposed some ugly truths about the modern poultry industry.
Now it’s time for bugs. Whether you regard them as agents of filth or sources of nutrition, integrating more of them into your diet, this video argues, is among a suite of dietary changes that we urgently need to consider to deal with food insecurity, biodiversity loss and climate change.

I love nothing more than eating an organic worm burger while waiting in line for the new Funko Pop release (with my Pride shirt on)! However, I don't really have much room in my pod to display my Funko Pop collection so I might just sell them on eBay and donate the proceeds to the ADL! So wholesome!

And now the European people are the 1st target trial population for this madness because they are the most "liberal" which means they are the most obedient to their governments & will eat those bugs & like it. But of course these imposters who call themselves liberals are anything but liberal. They are statists who don't believe their party leaders should be questioned, but any true liberal knows the basic tenet of classical liberalism is to always question authority. But not these mindless statist neo liberals. After Europe, it will go on to Australia. The once independent & proud Aussies are now sniveling pro statist neo liberal sissies. After Australia, then onward to Canada. By that time, about 5 years from now, it will be America next! This country is already majority demoncrat which means we are a good little obedient pro statist country now & will be eating these roaches too So Europe makes perfect sense to start this government experiment & Bill Gates has funneled millions of dollars into these programs because he's a very good mindless neo liberal who believes he's saving the planet & will convince the mindless herd to do as the "experts" tell them. Remember everyone. "WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!" All for one and one for all! 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆

I don't think you can compare lobsters with insects. You can clean a lobster really well, take out the organs and digestive tract. I also don't like it when i am eating a shrimp that is not cleaned well, eating excretion is not something that is appetising to me. So get some bigger bugs with nice meaty parts that can be cleaned or it will be really hard to change people's minds.

The good news is that we do not need to resort to eating bugs to avoid the damage to our environment from animal agriculture. The largest organization of nutrition professionals officially declared- "It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes. Plant-based diets are more environmentally sustainable than diets rich in animal products because they use fewer natural resources and are associated with much less environmental damage. Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk of certain health conditions, including ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and obesity. Low intake of saturated fat and high intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nuts, and seeds (all rich in fiber and phytochemicals) are characteristics of vegetarian and vegan diets that produce lower total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and better serum glucose control. These factors contribute to reduction of chronic disease. Vegans need reliable sources of vitamin B-12, such as fortified foods or supplements." Link on my channel under "About."

The benefits of switching to a purely plant based diet are amazing. 1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get several deadly chronic diseases including our top killers.) 2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases 3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen. 4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water 5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution 6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation 7-Animal ag increases PTSD and spousal abuse in the people who work in slaughterhouses 8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity 9-Animal welfare, obviously 10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation. 11- Longer lifespan. 12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.) There are lots of things I didn’t eat and I didn’t cook that I tried in a restaurant and I now like and have learned to cook. The problem with insects is that it’s only served in restaurants that serve only insects. It’s not like in Peru where you can choose between chicken and Guinea pig as à main cause. I can’t touch or normalise the experience because I can never accompany you to that restaurant if I don’t want to eat insects. Also for me personally insect protein should be processed in to something that doesn’t resemble an insect anymore for me to buy it and cook it. A bit like the dry soy/meat chunks maybe…

There's no way I'll eat bugs on purpose. And if I was meant to eat vegan I'd have been born a rabbit. I could easily grow and raise my "groceries" for the most part with my goats, chickens and turkey, rabbits and family garden. We need to be allowed to raise as much food as we are able to on our own instead of relying on mass producers and commit to preparing meals instead of relying totally on a grocer.

@@BizzeeB It was a common practice ( and greatly encouraged by the government) to have chickens and victory gardens during WW1. It helped get many families through the Depression and also helped with the war efforts. Why would it not help with saving the environment and help people eat better? There's been a rise in people in cities raising chickens in back yards and growing gardens since before the pandemic. I have several neighbors around me in a city of 87K that currently raise chickens and garden. It doesn't take much space and the practice itself isn't hard. I think it would be harder to wean off the convenience of buying that frozen pizza at the local Kwik Trip. Granted I did have the land at one time to raise more than chickens. Instead of a cow I had two doe goats for milk, rabbit, chicken and turkey. My beef came from the local meat shop that served local beef and dairy farmers. I grew veggies and herbs. I did buy the staples, of course, and my feed. Eating habits are just part of it. It's shopping habits too. For myself it was hard to just not Satisfy that instant gratification of opening the package and nuking a burrito. It was the mindset I had. I think in the long run people will find a way to help solve this problem in their own way and these people should be able to do it whether it's going vegan, or bug eating or even hunting and fishing. Being reliant on a food system like we have now isn't healthy for anyone really.

I've been around for quite a while.... In the 70s, it was acid rain, we had ten years to stop all the pollution or the acid rain would destroy all the crops and there would be massive starvation. All backed by science of course, didn't happen. In the 80s, it was global cooling on the face of Time Magazine. Because of pollution, we had 10 years before the next ice age was coming. It would destroy the crops, there would be massive starvation all backed by science, didn't happen. Then of course in the 90s, we had global warming and all of Al Gore's failed predictions. The coast of Florida would be flooded, the oceans would rise, changes in the climate causing massive starvation ,we only have 10 years left, backed by science of course, never happened. Now we have a scientific term that is so broad that is impossible to make a bad prediction ,climate change. Same play, different scene, climate changes causing droughts and flooding, massive starvation, we only have 10 years left, all backed by science........ Progressive globalist don't care about climate change because they don't believe it. If they really believed it, they wouldn't take their private jets, they wouldn't buy coastal mansions. Globalist only want three things, to control the food, to control currency, and to control you. No, I'm afraid this is where I get off.
