she didn’t want him to think that she was overly protective? that’s literally the one thing you want strangers around your children to think about you, that you will fight for your children and you won’t let anyone hurt them.

I think she was hoping Don would still stick around her and give her spending money since he was so into her kids. She just didn't plan on him disappearing with her.

@@belladonna5904 Yeah, after he showed her kinky shoes for his daughter and went to the dressing room with her, it was definitely clear to the mother that she was taking a risk. And "Virgin Islands" and no wife showing up. WHo knows what else he said to her that she did not mention. She wanted him to like her so that he would buy her something too, so she couldn't be critical about his creepy behaviour towards her children. And her saying to the operator that she herself had been raped... It's the kind of mother who doesn't actually want her children to have it easier than she has had it herself, to show them how ugly the world is and what it's been like, rather than shelter them from danger. And then oops, it escalated faster than she had expected.

She wanted him to like her so that his wallet would stay open some more and so she didn't mind the kinky remarks he had made about her daughter and him going to the dressing room alone with her. Had she been critical about it, he might have looked for another family to harass. So she took the risk and it escalated right away. She probably thought she could parade her kids in front of him some more and get more money for it. "Virgin Islands"... when you hear that, sitting in a white van with a pushy man whose wife isn't showing up.... Aaaall this time, after the strange car ride, she wants him to notice how little she is watching out, so that he gets more comfortable and more cash flows. She just probably didn't think that he would be mad enough to commit a crime right away. But she knew what he had on his mind for sure.

An older man walked up to me and my son in the store one time and asked how old he was and what my son's name was, all I said was "oh he's 2 months" and he proceeded to then reach and rub my son's foot and I immediately smacked his hand away. He walked away awkwardly. Part of me thought after "that was an old man... what if he was harmless? I might have hurt his feelings.." But in the moment the mother in me could not give a fuck tbh. @@cjvaye99 please. Just an old dude trying to be nice. When I was growing up in the 70s, it was normal for strangers to be nice to children. Hold their hand and help them find their mom in the store, give them a quarter for the tempting coin machines at the supermarket with gum and little toys, and take a genuine interest in talking to parents about their kids and (God forbid) maybe even patting them on the head with absolutely no ill intentions. Just kindness to others. Unfortunately these days no one trusts or even speaks to people they don't know. However, they might pull out their phones and film them as they are brutalized and not lift a finger and that's honestly a shame. I'd gladly take the days when just talking to someone else's child didn't automatically get you branded as a 'freak'.

#1 Rule to Avoid Letting Yourself be Manipulated: You don't need to care what a stranger thinks of you. You don't need to care if they say your response is rude. They don't matter and they don't need to matter. NEVER let that be a reason to put yourself or others in danger. NEVER. Safety and caution always matters more than someone else's opinion. Please don't make that mistake of believing otherwise.

@picklepicklegobblegobble6257 well, that would depend on the situation. In this case, I'm referring to using this method as a form of protection against manipulative criticism rather than an a way to shield oneself from valid criticism. If you think about it, there's a big difference to be seen. In the case of this video, the man was using seemingly true and valid responses as a way to make the mother question whether her unease was really warranted. The fear of being the unreasonable one in the situation despite her gut instinct was what ultimately led to the death of her own daughter. Now, toxic masculinity can vary in how it's presented, but ultimately the toxic aspect would be using it for self gain with far less regard for the other person's wellbeing. This could be using that mindset in order to validate oneself by establishing a sense of power through behavior and action that could be associated with typical "male" traits. Ultimately, this can really apply to any toxic person regardless of gender or sex. However, the key difference is the confidence in ones intent. With the toxic masculinity example, the confidence would lie mostly in the intent to establish power, control, or dominance in a situation. In the protective example, the confidence would lie in the intent to protect onesself and/or others in a situation. Based on the objective/intent, lack of confidence could be either good or bad. For toxic masculinity, a lack of confidence could mean that the person in question may still have an inate sense of empathy, awareness, and morale, which would suggest that they can still be reasoned with, and that would be good. For protection, a lack of confidence could mean the disregard of key warning signs in a potentially dangerous situation, which may leave someone vulnerable, and that would be bad. Hopefully that makes sense!

Unfortunately, based on witness statements I've heard in other coverage...I really do not think it would have helped. I think he got her isolated pretty damn quick. My understanding is a church parking lot was a place the van was spotted, I think that's right about where he brutalized her. I should also add that this happened in 2013 well before emergency alerts on cell phones were a thing, ntm smart phones were not ubiquitous just yet. So the most visibility would have happened on the freeway. Given today's tech, they may have utilized that. But they absolutely should have exhausted every resource they could for even just a chance of retrieving her unharmed (or at least alive) What the fuck does it cost the department to alert the public that a child is missing and in danger. It's kindof mind blowing

This is insane negligence and I feel so awful for Cherish, the person who’s sole responsibility it is to keep her safe let her down in the most shocking way. Can we also not forget that the kids had not eaten all day ?!?! I’ve seen a lot of comments about the mother essentially selling her kids for the money. What if they discussed waiting until close for everything to go down? There’s no way she didn’t notice it getting dark and late out; that the kids might need to sleep, especially Cherish before her flight the next day. I know this case is old, but I watched the video again. The fact that her surviving children call out neglect also speaks volumes. She should also be held criminally responsible for the neglect. No loving mother would EVER in a million years let a stranger go into a changing room alone with their little girl, or even little boy. They wouldn’t even let the stranger have the opportunity to “hang out” more than a few seconds. I have a little one; people stop me to say he’s cute and to chat briefly about how old he is. But it lasts 60 seconds, if that, and it’s all in a passing moment. I’d never ever let anyone talk to me for more than 90 seconds without walking towards the registers and close to some help. HELL NO; you get the eff away from me and my child; idc how “nice” you seem. If you’re really nice, you’ll know moms don’t want to be bothered too much when their hands are full and their hearts are already brimming with worry for their little ones.

Absolutely positively tragically heartbreaking…this case is one of those moments when I hate this planet. I hope this man dwells in the deepest tortuous depths of hell for all eternity. When I was 13 I had to walk a mile home alone from the bus stop everyday after school. One afternoon it looked like it was about to rain, and a strange man pulled up next to the sidewalk and ‘kindly’ offered to give me a ride home. I said no, and he continued to pressure me: “I really don’t mind, I’m driving that way anyways. Plus, it’s about to rain and I don’t want you to get wet.” Again, I politely declined and kept walking (never approaching his car) Then he got angry, started yelling at me “I’m trying to do something nice for you and you are being so rude!” And on and on… obviously trying to guilt trip me for not getting in the car. This scared me, and I walked faster. He was screaming profanities at me, called me a ‘bitch’ and sped off. I was pretty terrified. I’m so thankful my parents taught me how to say NO to adults. Teaching children to say NO and disobey is a very important, life saving skill that they need to protect themselves. They also talked to me about being wary of strangers offering ‘kind gestures’ and never, EVER getting in a car with a stranger, no matter what the situation. Even if it’s raining. If I was 13 and thought this man was sus, I can only imagine what this mom felt. Yes, kind people in the world exist. But they will never pressure or guilt you to accept what they are offering. And when it comes to small children… be extra cautious about what people get access to your kids.

The only thing she was naive about was that the man planned on raping her daughter right away. She knew what he had on his mind. He shows her kinky shoes, "Virgin Islands", wife not showing up, and who knows what else he said to her that she is not sharing. She wanted him to keep giving money so she needed him to stay comfortable. And he was only comfortable with her kids not being safe from him, so she made sure they weren't and let him have his way. It just escalated faster than she had expected. Notice how she has to mention that her daughter wanted her to buy something for herself but she refused. This exchange might have never even taken place. It's a way of making it look like she did not intentionally please the man in order to get money for herself out of him. Her realizations must be partially genuine considering that she hadn't anticipated this exact outcome. And of course she's pittying herself for the negative attention she will be getting for this. Oh and lastly, she knows what emotions are expected from a mother who lost her child. Just think about it... Her daughter just vanished and instead of focusing on how to find her (a better description) she babbles on and on about how he managed to trick her. She's already defending herself because is aware of her own guilt.

Here’s the problem. This mother is very comfortable exploiting people. She had a bad feeling, she didn’t trust him but the idea of getting some free stuff was just too tempting. It struck me when she said “I just wanted to buy a dress for Cherish” then when they’re taken to Walmart…she loads up a cart with “piles” for each of her daughters…she thought she was going to take advantage of an old man and it backfired horrifyingly. Her daughter got caught up in two horrible adults trying to take advantage of each other. Disgusting.

I respectfully partially disagree with this comment. Rayne was clearly struggling to buy new clothes for the girls at the Dollar General and when the old man realized this, he used it as a weapon to get her to trust him. Was she neglectful? Yeah. Should she have told him that her girls can’t go with him even if he seemed “nice”? Of course. Was she unfit to have the girls under her custody? Without a doubt. But to say that she was trying to take of advantage of Donald by getting free stuff from him is far from the truth, in my opinion. Rayne was in a vulnerable position and she was desperate to provide for her daughters, so she blindly believed him and he used that to HIS advantage.

Who was reported by said expert to neglect her whenever her boyfriend was around? Wow. Just wow.

I was pushing my stroller with my two year old in it up the hill on my way home in pouring rain. It was winter and already dark out. I had a whole lot of shopping with me, too. When a car stopped right next to me and a guy, alone in the car, asked if he could take us home. I declined. He insisted, the weather, cold, walking up the hill with all the stuff and a small child. I firmly told him no, we'll be good. He drove off, parked right after the next crossroads on the side we were walking on. I took another, much longer route to go home, but tried to stick to heavy lit main streets, with traffic and a lot of homes. Gone because of someone else's stupidity, carelessness, and neglect, IMO. That someone was her mother. When you regularly text & drive with your children in the car, it's considered neglect. That's worse than driving drunk with your kids in the car. To do that regularly would easily be neglect. So you can't have 1 be neglect and not the other. Her mother was texting & driving and wrecked and killed our child. Not sure I'll ever be able to forgive her.

@@J.C... I'm not even going to pretend I understand. That's beyond any level of pain I've experienced and saying I'm sorry for your loss sounds ridiculous. What I will say is that energy you feel as you direct hate at her mother is wasted energy. Her mother will be haunted by that and I believe karma is real. Channel that energy into knowing your daughter is looking down on you wanting you to have the best life you can. Make her proud. Even little achievements, she's there smiling. As you feel the breeze across your face, or a little shiver, that's her saying "well done daddy" xxx

I feel you. However, abusers are almost always have a history of being abused as kids. What would you say if you met a child who was abused, then found out years later they carried out the same abuse? Would you still want them to burn too? I personally understand that they need to receive consequences, but I’m usually bothered with people who see abusers and say “Let them burn” without a second thought because I think we do need to highlight their past as an abused child. NOT TO GIVE THEM SYMPATHY. But instead highlight the need for appropriate psychological intervention for kids who are abused. If we can look at an abuser and say “This was once a hurt child” then we can address one of the most powerful factors of creating an abuser. We can remove the stigma of getting treatment and hit the problem at the source. So many dismiss these factors because of their outrage and refusal to humanize the abuser. Some people even fall back on “Well I was abused and I don’t abuse.” Anecdotes don’t counter statistics, and taking that stance further devalues the influence it has on creating future abusers.

I do not usually leave comments, but I have something I would like to say: I have watched many of these channels because I have an interest in the psychological perspectives of true criminal cases. With that said, I truly appreciate this channel and its approach to the mental health of its viewers. Many others have a tendency to sensationalize the worst aspects of a case, show graphic or gory imagery for shock value, or focus more on the perpetrator than the victim. None of that is true here and it is greatly appreciated, but what is most valued above all is the warning the channel operator is regularly giving before videos as to the nature of what will be discussed. He would rather a person retain their mental stability than gain one more view. For that, I will always support this channel’s content and its continued presence on this platform.

He was telling me on the way over that something was wrong with his butt (meanwhile he was sitting on my passenger seat…) and he even told me while I was driving that he didn’t like my haircut. 😂 I’m giving him a free ride and he’s making a comment about me? Noooo. I was too worried about being a people pleaser that I gave a stranger a ride in my car. He could have called 911 or the police if he really needed a ride. He's setting up that he's a married Christian and is like "hey, here's my ID." That trauma tends to confuse boundaries. So sad that she had kids that she could not support adequately financially or otherwise. This was the result of extremely poor judgment and the child suffered horribly because of it.
