My grandfather was a commander on a naval ship during WWII, and he never talked much about the war at all. But once he let loose about the scary sea creatures that no one believes exists. He said that there were giant squids, and this was told to me in the 1980s long before scientists actually captured one in 2008. Navy men don't talk of these things because they know they will not be believed.

I met a mariner not long ago who described a typhoon at sea, which lasted for days. Finally the weather cleared, and the water was amazingly calm and clear. Looking down into it from high aboard the ship, near the bridge, he could see what he called huge sea monsters which he never imagined existed. Some swam along with the ship. He never saw those conditions or those creatures again.

My dad served on Soviet subs. He said he was mostly scared of soviet sub-par engineering and not pissing off the intelligence officers. It was very loud as well. He said he wishes he had great stories but he really doesn’t have any. It was mostly “boring fear”. Closest I’ve ever got to a submarine was at a naval museum when one was open to the public for a tour. Gave me much greater respect for my dad.

Having served on board U.S. submarines in the 80s, I can't stress enough how much U-28's log book was glossed over. However, it's the Iberian survivor's accounts that are the most important. You see, the Iberian did try to run, and the battle did begin at 6,000 meters (almost 4 miles)... but it opened with the U-28's deck-gun, not her torpedoes. The shelling apparently damaged the Iberian to the point where she slowed, allowing the U-28 to close the distance. The Captain of the U-28, using a megaphone, ordered the Iberian to stop, Captain Jago of the Iberian, complied. The Captain of the U-28 then ordered the crew of the Iberian to take to their lifeboats, and again, Captain Jago of the Iberian complied. The important thing to pay attention to here is that this all took place... BEFORE THE IBERIAN WAS SUNK. In fact, the Captain of the Iberian, with one Dr Patrick Burns and all of the Iberian wounded aboard his personal lifeboat, rowed to the submarine to ask for medical supplies, which were given. So, the crew of the Iberian were not scrambling into the water while their ship was going down... they got into their lifeboats calmly and rowed away to a safe distance before U-28 fired her first torpedo. I find it impossible to believe that none of them watched the spectacle of their own boat being destroyed, nor watched the alleged "massive explosion" that took place 25 seconds after their ship's bow slipped beneath the waves. And, in fact, the newspaper reporting on this story does indeed report that the Iberian crew watched intently from their lifeboats as their ship was destroyed by the U-28. Also, I say "alleged explosion" because, even though the paper took great pains to make the story as dramatic as possible, there's no mention of this explosion taking place after the ship went down. It's not mentioned... because not one single survivor of the Iberian ever reported it. The only explosion they witnessed came from the torpedo. I would also like to add that, the story I recited above (taken from the _August 7, 1915 Cork County Eagle & Munster Advertiser_ ... a local Irish newspaper, where the survivors came ashore) fits perfectly with the standard operating procedure of U-boats during WW1. Ships were most often stopped by U-boat commanders, their crew ordered off and then sunk after everyone was safely away. It was considered cowardly for a submarine commander to fire upon a ship without warning, however... that did change over the course of the war (especially as cargo ships began arming themselves). I'm linking the report containing this newspaper's story here (scroll to the bottom where you see the two news clippings to read this account): blogs.forteana.org/node/93

The Bonesaw .. Thank you for your post. What's most interesting to me is how this information, which anyone seriously investigating this story would uncover, doesn't simply end the discussion. This story cannot stand up to even basic scrutiny, yet it lives on. I would argue that the real story here is what this ability to overlook the facts suggests about the human need to believe in the "unexplained".

David, I appreciate the question, rhetorical as it may be. In my own personal experience, I've seen, time and time again... that it's a combination of sheer laziness on the part of the reader/viewer, along with a healthy dose of confirmation bias. People are more trusting of a view when it coincides with their own. Admittedly, as skeptical as I try to be, I've even been caught doing it in the past -- although, these days, I do much better at avoiding it. At some point, everyone is going to stop digging when they keep finding post after post agreeing with their position. This story was very much like that. In fact, I had an entirely different post written and ready to go, when I finally came across the article with those news clippings in them (and I'd already been to four or five sites and was on the verge of stopping, thinking I'd found all there was to find). That initial post of mine was critical, but I had nothing tangible to point to; however... that was my point towards their position (the leap of faith that 60 people would choose to ignore a giant explosion that blew a 60 foot creature out of the water). So, I was very glad (and lucky) to discover these two news articles, written immediately after the sinking, that not only noted that the survivors were paying close attention, but that there was no massive explosion after the ship had sunk. In light of your very point, however, I do try (especially on KZbin), to get the word to everyone on the post. That's why you see me spamming every thread on the post. The way KZbin works, most people will not see what I've written if I just respond generally, so besides the main post, I try to put a blurb in every thread so that they can see that this was literally debunked the day after the event and years before the hoax was ever created. In that way, maybe at least one or two of them will be more cautious about these kinds of stories in the future (which, honestly, is probably a fool's errand, but I'm still compelled to try). And it doesn't always work -- in fact, I'd say it fails to work more often than not. I still get people who get angry whenever I find evidence that blows up their theory. It turns out that people don't like having their world view shredded to pieces; and many of them will defend to the death their initial belief, no matter how convincing the counter-argument may be.

When I was around 15 I inherited some of my grandfathers old things, he left among other things some old clothes in a large suitcase. I left them alone pretty much as they didn’t really fit/suit me, until a couple of years ago, when I left for uni I wanted to take the large suitcase as it was big enough for a lot of clothes. Whilst emptying out the old stuff I found a really old wooden coat hanger and took it with me as I was running low on them, after a few weeks I noticed a name was stamped into the coat hanger. The name was burnt in with what appeared to be a heated stamp of some description, after examining it carefully with a magnifying glass I realised it actually said “S.S. Iberian” after looking up the ship I discovered this story, and thought it was crazy. My grandad was in the merchant navy during the Second World War so he probably picked it up as a souvenir from someone, still have it at home somewhere

Curious World In 1999 i was fishing in egypt alexandria. Normally we only fished at day. But we were able to rent a boat with sleeping possibility. So when the sun went under we decided to try our luck and started fishing. After 10min one of us (we were 3) starred at a point in the water looking like a flashlight comming swimming from deep deep under water. The light got more intens and seemed to get closer to the surface in a amazing speed. When it almost reached the surface the water started to boil like your cooking hot water. This occurred for around 30 sec i guess but it seemed forever at the moment. After the boiling stoped there was a beam comming out of the water and shinning each of us into the face. But it was not only one beam. Each of us hade a beam in his face. But only for seconds. Than the entire spectacle stoped as fast as it appeared.

Aside from the intro being a bit long, I did like the way the information was presented. I hate when you see "mystery" videos where the author clearly has an agenda to either validate or discredit the subject. My grandfather told a story of them shooting a Great White Shark, he said they used winches to retrieve the shark, it was 24 feet long and well over 2000 lbs. That was in 1943 off the Hawaiian Islands when they were heading to Guadalcanal .

@freddieellis8449
@freddieellis8449 7 жыл бұрын
The issue is not industrial output but the timeline of the industrial revolution. Realistically speaking, the industrial revolution can be said to have started in 1713 with the invention of Thomas Newcomen's atmospheric steam engine. Following that, the significant improvements to the steam engine made by James Watt made the machine a lot more efficient, reliable and practical. The steam engine was the primary power source and driving force behind the industrial revolution, so we can take it as read that this, specifically is the turning point in the inception and explosion of heavy industry. Even if we go by the invention of mass-production, that can be traced to Marc Brunel (the father of Isambard Kingdom Brunel), who conceived a process for manufacturing rigging blocks for royal navy ships in the early 1800s. Or you could also equally argue that it is traceable to Richard Arkwright who, in the mid-1700s devised a way to mass produce spun cotton thread. So the assertion that "...in 1914 the industrial revolution was in it's infancy..." is very much incorrect to the tune of 100-200 years, depending on the particular school of thought you subscribe to. So yeah, there's that....

Interesting and well put together. As some one who has spent a lot of time at sea in various craft I doubt the story itself is true. An air breathing creature especially a sea crocodile would not survive the North Atlantic, too cold, lots of people, and sea traffic would have spotted its mates. Now a large fish, water breather, that is far more likely.

Here's a thought, regarding the notion of "lost in translation": a measurement given in feet could be mistranslated to, or from, a measurement in meters, when writing a German-language story in English. This happened in recent years with the very fitting, Mesozoic predator Liopleurodon, which was misreported in popular books as being 25 meters long (85 feet), when it was actually more like 25 FEET. If you recall that 60 feet equates to a little over 18 meters, then maybe we're looking at an 18-foot animal here, about the right size for a crocodile. But that could also be grasping at straws, in my part: who knows?

As an expat Englishman living in Germany, I read von Forstner's account in German and unlike what was described here, he did actually specifically state that while the creature had four legs, they also seemed to possess strong "FINS" attached to them ! So the theory that the crocodile (?) was "merely" an ocean going amphibious reptile is not entirely correct - it could well have been of an unknown aquatic species, or in fact a survivor from prehistoric times. If it existed, of course. But why would a renowned former U-Boat commander and naval officer undermine his own credibility by reporting such an incident at all, especially if it was fabricated ? Another clue might come from his own words - he wrote that the first underwater explosion had been quite weak, but the second, which hurled the animal out of the water, was very strong. Too strong, and von Forstner speculated that the "Iberian" was transporting explosives that hadn't been declared in the vessel's cargo manifest. Why would this have been important ? Obviously von Forstner had read the cargo manifest, or received it from the vessel's captain or first officer, so he knew what the vessel had been transporting. Wouldn't the manifest have then also mentioned a crocodile, regardless of size, if it had been on board ? But returning to the alleged explosives - was there a dispute regarding the sinking of the ship that the non- declaration of explosives in the ship's papers would have changed, or solved ? This surely wasn't a second "Lusitania" case, in which German sources accused the British for shipping weapons and explosives on board of an ocean liner - or was it ? Even then, why make up a story of a massive crocodile to prove his case ? It just doesn't make sense. I believe that von Forstner may have been influenced by the "Nessie" hype to come forward and disclose his strange story, as do whistleblowers nowadays when others step forward first. I do believe that he and his officers saw something extremely unusual that day - unless the explosives question is of any relevance - and that he reported exactly what he alleged to have done. Who knows what still lurks in the fathomless deeps of the world's oceans ? Maybe thousands of creatures believed to be extinct for millions of years ? Why not ? Nevertheless, another excellent video documentary by IJ Kelly and friends, accompanied by authentic photographs and other documents, telling the tale from all possible angles in an unbiased fashion, as all good reporters invariably should. 🌟🌟🌟

That's because eye witness testimony is the least reputable evidence in the scientific community. I hate to break it to you, but with the technology we have today and the sheer volume of photos taken these days, if any UFOs, mythical creatures, etc. were real, there would be an influx in pictures of them, and there hasn't been. I also have to point out that a never before discovered sea creature is hardly something people will call you crazy for claiming to have seen, it happens on a daily basis practically.

There are so many sighting stories of large creatures in the water that even though some could be whales, there is always the possibility of ancient species surviving. The ocean is so vast & deep with only a percentage of it really studied, there could be even new types of large creatures that we could never possibly see. But remember the sea itself is not a place to be taken lightly, regardless of the vessel.

Still due to overfishing in the oceans its hard to believe, that such big creatures could have survived Jurrassic and Cretaceous ages. Because sooner or later there should have bern found some proof of their existence. Like destroyed nets, attacked whales and such. Its too hard to believe, that a creature like Mosasaurus or even the Megalodon could survive into our age. Most seaman's stories are just exaggerated stories to spread also some fear among non seamen. Altough they surely met animals like the Architheutes but with exaggerated stories and drawings.

In WW2 it was noticed that low frequency vibrations such as explosions on ships could attract sharks to the site of a battle. It is also suggested that the dull thuds of wooden paddles on wooden native boats as they are used can attract hippos and crocodiles. It would then seem possible that in times of ocean warfare predators might move toward the sounds of a sinking ship looking for a free meal. If the ship went down stern first then the boilers would have been some 100 plus feet below the surface before the bow went down. Since streamlined objects tend to sink at about one foot per second the boilers would have been over 200 feet down and the bow just 25 to 30 feet down when the boilers were crushed. This would have released the pressure from the boilers as well as any air trapped in the hull. The object the captain saw was thrown into the air by a huge and very hot bubble of air and stream. What it was is hard to say but the description of the events do sound possible.

I believe in captain von Forstner's account, considering his reputation of being an honest officer and a gentleman. It's unfortunate he became the only survivor of the witnesses by 1933, but that's life. People die in wartime and in peacetime, so it should not surprise anybody. The video narrator insists several times on the fact that von Forstner kept silent about this event for 20 years, as if such behaviour could be attributed to some kind of foul play, That suspicion is ridiculous and casts a shadow over the captain's integrity and good name, which he does not deserve. Put yourself in his place, in wartime and commanding a submarine in 1914...would you dare report about a sea monster of which you have no evidence to show ? Chance are he would have been ridiculized and made fun of..! His naval career would have been endangered, so no wonder he chose to keep the incident to himself, and if he changed his mind 20 years later it was because in those days the monster of Lake Ness had become popular and the event he witnessed in July 1914 would not seem so incredible.

A body that large, close enough to the after it sunk to be thrown from the water high up in the air would have died from the blast! Bodies float and this happened not that far from the coast - and yet, not a single trace of the "creature" that this captain claimed to have seen on the ocean at night during a explosion! We know pareidolia isn't uncommon, and if you're tired and it's night, it's even easier for the brain to play tricks on you..... Now I'm not saying he didn't believed to have seen something, but that doesn't mean he did see it!

Bingo, Mr. P. L. Carey! Throughout this narration, my thought was something like "What? The narrator is drawing exactly the wrong conclusion! Given the totality of the situation (wartime; respected naval officer; no military, at any time or place in history, likes dealing with "unusual sightings!") I would cite the USA & massive E.T. cover-ups as a prime example. It certainly would NOT have helped the captain's career to have reported this at an earlier date, so the reporting date in itself should not be considered at all in considering the validity of this story. If anything, it would lend credibility, rather than doubt, because it comports with both the reputation of Capt. Forster and of how society tends to treat those who dare to report unusual facts. Also, I heartily disagree with the narrator's opinion that the captain's memory of this event would be dimmed by the passage of twenty years! First, one has to be unusually bright to rise to the rank of commanding officer (Captain, in this case); second, if anyone on earth had seen a "sixty foot monster" shooting out of the ocean, I assure you, that is an image that would stick with the person forever - 20 years would do nothing to dim this memory! (Apparently, the narrator has not read or seen any eyewitness accounts of persons who've witnessed highly unusual phenomena. In every one I've ever read or seen, the witness states that the event or primary image remains indelible in his/her mind, even decades later!) Sorry, fans of this channel. I actually love to discover excellent reporting of unusual topics. But this one just does not make the cut. Mediocre research, combined with simplistic and illogical conclusions, equal "not worth my time." But best wishes to those who disagree, as even a poorly produced documentary can be a great conversation starter, or an inspiration for someone to do use the same or similar materials and do a much better job! Shalom.

I’m Persian and my great grandfather moved to India for construction work in the 1910’s. He was working in Odisha. Several workers were gone missing while bathing and doing laundry in the many lakes. My Great grandpa and 7 other tough fellas got on a 30 foot boat. This was at the crack of dawn so it was still dark. They saw an island along the lake and saw it move. It was a crocodile l. It started to SWIM after them. He said based on the size and aggression towards a 30 foot boat that he believed it to be 30-33 feet long. After 10-15 mins they managed to get away and return to camp. A week later villagers stated they saw the beast kill an adult Bengal Tiger. Based on what they said, half of the tigers entire body was completely in the crocs mouth. The best place for these Crocs to reach these sizes are the Philippines and India based on a more diverse ecosystem and larger prey compared to Australia. There’s definitely 25+ foot Crocs out there.

A good and fairly presented video. I'd add that the only known ocean crossing crocodiles exist in the South Pacific. Those waters present nearly ideal water temperatures for thousands of miles for a reptile like a crocodile, and the various species of crocks are native to these areas. There are no native crocodiles I'm aware of in Ireland, and there would have to be to make the story of this being a modern croc plausible. The other immediate issue I see is that hundreds of submarines made thousands of war voyages for the warring powers in WWI and WWII, in the Atlantic and Pacific as well as the Indian Ocean and other minor oceans and seas. Not one that I'm aware of has reported any creature even vaguely similar to the report of the U-28. For the past almost 40 years, the US Navy has had large nuclear subs that stay submerged for six months to a year at time. They can dive to tremendous depths of at least 5,000 feet. They are equipped with sophisticated sonars and radars that, estimates say, can show what's in the surrounding water with almost photographic accuracy. Not one of these subs, even with their long exposure to the undersea world, has reported anything like the U-28. I'm inclined to write this off to an interesting but fanciful sea tale. It was 1933, the depths of the depression, and I imagine the captain was in need of money. The creation of this tale, I'm sure, got him some speaking fees and book and pamphlet royalties. I don't begrudge him the money he got, and I hope it helped him through his declining years.

Your Burns effect pans and zooms are very nice - again, not too fast, and that makes a difference. I was there that fateful day. I saw it with my own seeing spheres. The beast was enormous, like the size of a Pringle, except if that Pringle was 60 feet long instead of its usual size. Now, you may be wondering, "You fool! That would make you at least 102 years old, and even that's assuming you were born on the same day you saw the dreaded reptile!" Well, you would be correct on both terms. I was born on the wreckage of the U-boat's target. My immigrating mother, having hid herself in a crate, carried me within her womb. It was not until the explosion sounded that my mother became frightened and birthed me. In an instant, the ship was torn asunder and I saw something not even a newborn could forget: the monster. It swallowed my mother whole, but spared my life. It spoke to me, "Your mother is dead. I am your mother from now on." And so she raised me, deep beneath the sea. Also, I have lived this long thanks to hacking the Government's central computer system and changing the slider of my lifespan from 83 years to immortality. This is the first time my story has ever been heard.. And being the wise being that I am, I have told it through a KZbin comment-- the most credible source of information in the world. I wanted to tell the world that the creature makes for a horrible mother.

The problem with arguments about undiscovered species is that a species ability to remain undiscovered is tied to its size, position on the food chain, and how distant its habitat is from humans. Although a little fanciful right at the end, I have to say how refreshing it is to observe a genuine attempt of an objective analysis of these bizarre, U boat occurrences. Intelligent and well researched, the case for both the existence of an aquatic chimera and the possible misinterpretation of events/creation of a hoax, were well balanced and well argued. The Coelacanth springs to mind as well as recent discoveries of large, deep sea sharks. This is a compelling mystery and this video does it justice, refreshingly free of the idiotic, unsubstantiated claims and near-hysteria often associated with this subject-matter.

4 overlooked questions might be 1. what was a saltwater croc doing off the coast of Ireland where the water temp is lower than Australian waters and 9k miles away. 2. a 60 foot creature w/ legs thrown into the air from an underwater explosion would likely have caught some damage and made for shore to recuperate, nobody saw it while looking for salvage & survivors. 3. why did the creature swim toward the torpedoes explosion instead of away unless it was on board but there was no rumors even though it was gigantic because 4. the biggest saltwater crocs today are less than half it's length.

I actually do think they ran into a creature as they described. however, I think "fear" played a big role in everyone keeping quiet at the time. ive studied both world wars and looking at this from a "german" angle, I believe they may have kept quiet to save their reputations. I think they were afraid of being labled crazy/insane/nuts...etc... and thus losing the public/governments faith in their business, thus losing opportunities for work (income). just a thought. thanks again

Excellent video! Well done! The study of allegedly extinct creatures is known as cryptozoology, and there are many out there who are interested in this topic. There are also books written 20 or more years ago with photos of things that have washed up on beaches or caught by fishing vessels. When I was a commercial diver on Catalina Island I caught a fish in distress near the surface that I had never seen before. To me it looked prehistoric. I took it to the local aquarium and they kept it alive of about a day before it died due to lack of pressure. It was a deep water fish of some kind, very silver, and very fragile, about 2 feet long. I've yet to see one like it or ID it. The truth is out there....

This story is unrelated to sea monsters but it’s weird nonetheless & figured I’d share here… My Great Uncle was on a Navy Ship going through the Bermuda Triangle. He said everything was routine and normal and suddenly the ship stopped. Him and his ship mates ran up to see what was going on and he saw a group of sailors all stopped and looking out toward the ocean. When he and his group got to them he said his heart sank to his stomach and he was terrified. Him, along with everyone else saw a giant wall of water standing perfectly still. It wasn’t a wave and it wasn’t a storm. It was a wall made of water. He said nobody could believe it. The ship had to correct course and go around it and he said it was the most unexplainable thing he’s ever seen and was terrified. He said nobody on the ship really talked about it ever again or brought it up out of fear of being ridiculed or called crazy but he describes it as a giant wall of water. It had to be over 100 feet tall and he couldn’t guess the width, he just said it was really long, and just stood still. The ship was able to go around it though. And he never saw anything like that after. When he told me the story I could tell he is still confused and mystified by it. He’s really old now, but even to this day it bothers the hell out of him because it was so unexplainable.

I have to say, I'm pleased with the content overall.. kinda up my alley, you might say. but more than that, I'm pleased with your overall research, and the fact that you actually have press releases and logs, etc.. combined with the fact that you're easy to understand and don't speak in a rushed voice, I can't believe I hadn't stumbled across your channel before.. job well done sir, keep up the solid work.. greetings from Canada.. :)

Brad Fitz Thank you for the comments. I try to get as much info as possible. This sometimes means it takes a while to get a video done, but I'm still here. New video will be up in a few days.

If an explosion was forceful enough to blow that thing so far into the air, it would have blown it to pieces.

I would say that the theory of the creature being on the ship its self makes the most sense as it explains even more why the crew didn't say anything about it. Yes stress of the situation can be a good reason as well but the need to keep a secret is in my eyes much stronger.

Before and during the war my family (who were fishermen) who came from Stranraer trawled for fish over the North Sea. I was told many old tales of such creatures, witnessed by my kinsmen. I thought the stories they told were merely entertaining even though they looked serious when describing the creatures.

My Grandpa, a true Explorer, Treasure Hunter and Jack of all trades, did knew about the ruins of a sunken man made structure south off the Cuban coast. People still look at me with skepticism.

There are many sunken cities all round the world. Verry common. Continental shifts are most likely the cause.
