Hi John this is Handyman48, that happend , to me plenty of times, it's not your recorder they put too much tape in the tape cassette try taking some tape out of the cassette & see what happends.Infact put the tape in fast forward then push stop then push play.If that doesn't work open up the cassette housing inside there's a small post & a roller put the tape behind the small post & roller & button her up then put the tape back into the cassette player then tell me if it works.

It his a 90 minutes tape, so there his suppose to be that mush tape into it for 45 minutes on each side, and I have one and it works just fine, in my most recent tape player is old now but it still work on it, and it work just fine in older tape player as well, without eating the tape, but the older tape player will always eat the tape from chrome tape and it never eat the tape from a chrome tape the first time play in it and the older tape player take a lot of plays from the chrome tape before it started to eat it, the tape that got damage by the older tape player works fine in the old tape player even while passing on the damage part of the tape, and it also sound perferct on the damage part of the tape.

Try another cassette player, especially one that accepts the tape upside down.....

That's not going to help, the gentle has to take some tape out.
