The Castle of Otranto - audiobook
Horace WALPOLE (1717 - 1797)
free-audio-book...
The Castle of Otranto is a 1764 novel by Horace Walpole. It is generally held to be the first gothic novel, initiating a literary genre which would become extremely popular in the later 18th century and early 19th century. Thus, Castle, and Walpole by extension is arguably the forerunner to such authors as Ann Radcliffe, Bram Stoker, Daphne du Maurier, and Stephen King. (Summary by Wikipedia)

this audiobook reading is actually super helpful because Walpole writes dialogue in really uncomfortable ways. the character voices in this audiobook really help to distinguish who says which line and allows for an easier reading flow. thank you!

I'm currently trying to translate this into gothic. You know, first gothic book in gothic. Many thanks for uploading this! As for my opinion on the work itself, I understand this was the prototype for all subsequent Gothic novels so one can't expect perfection, but sweet merciful heavens these characters were so dull I nearly fell asleep! The only interesting character in the whole bunch was Manfred because he kept swinging between relatable and jerk status the whole time. Still at least I can say I read/listened to this all important work, it's good to know the roots of where modern literature came from.

I bought this on kindle and it is missing the preface to the novel, which explains quite a bit and puts a lot into context of the novel. Thanks for that and the audiobook of this as well. Gives the reader of this novel a much richer experience!

The preface is part of the fiction written by Walpole. It was a convention common at the time for writers to distance themselves from their works by pretending that they had *found" a work written or a story recounted by someone else, that they have merely translated. Being a novelist wasn't yet a *thing*, novels as a form of writing were in their infancy, much less a respectable way of earning a living! Many novels of this period do something similar, Gulliver's Travels for instance.

Yes, uh-TRAN-toe. His reading and phrasing isn't great. And what I presume is a poem at the end of the preface was read really weirdly. It sounded like he was pausing at the end of lines of poetry even though you can tell by the phrases that they run on rather than pause. There's being able to read, being literate, then being able to READ. He can do the first, but not so great at the second 🙄
