Always amazes me how well the Studio Ghibli animations dub so well into English and the thing that amazes me the most is, unlike in Disney movies where the actors seem to insist you know who it is doing the dubbing all the way through the movie, whereas in Ghibli they are doing the dubbing for the sake of the movie and not just their egos!

The movie was fascinating to see, but what’s surprising to see is Tim Curry playing the role as the Cat King. Like damn, I grew up terrified as a kid to see play his role as Pennywise from Stephen King’s It, and all of sudden, I see him in one of Hayao Miyazaki’s films. So gotta say, bless this movie and bless Tim Curry for giving me the unexpected surprise.

Just a side observation: the original title was "Neko no Ongaeshi". The last word means to return a favor or an obligation; it's not about a cat returning anywhere or anything. I like to translate it as "The Cat's Payback" because that phrase can have multiple meanings, as it does in the film. This anime works on so many levels; it's a longtime favorite of mine!

This really makes me wish Miyazaki spent more time on backstory and some characterisation instead of just going for the golden 1.5 hour mark for kids movies. This story really could have been fleshed out a lot better with more meaning. It's good, but it leaves me wanting more.

A decade late, but this isn't one of Miyazaki's Ghibli films - it was directed by Hiroyuki Morita and written by Reiko Yoshida. Also, Miyazaki's "My Neighbor Totoro" is slightly under 90 minutes but has fantastic character realisation; the same is true of "Grave of the Fireflies". The non-Ghibli "Garden of Words" and "5cm per Second" achieve great character studies in just 45 minutes and one hour respectively. It's just a matter of quality and focus.
