Күн бұрын

Biologist Liz Bonnin explores why some of the most bizarre and surprising animals pair up with each other and with us. She scours the globe in search of the most extraordinary and cute animal relationships, investigating why such odd couples sometimes form. From dogs mothering baby tigers and polar bears befriending huskies, to buffaloes bonding with grown men and lions behaving like our brothers.

From wiki: Kamunyak (meaning "Blessed One"), was a lioness who is famous for having adopted at least 6 oryx calves, and fighting off predators and lion prides which attempted to eat her charges. She suffered starvation, since the calves did not act like lion cubs and wait somewhere while she hunted for food… She was last sighted in February 2004, and despite a number of searches, has not been seen since.

The cat mum adopting the ducklings is something that can be on children’s books ❤️
@Madheim777
@Madheim777 Жыл бұрын
Seems unexpected, but is actually not that uncommon. There are lots of species which adopt cubs from others. There was a case of a female tiger on a zoo which lost their babies right after birth, so it became depressed. The solution was putting a litter of piglings, which were orphans, with some false tiger skin near the tigress. She made a sudden change and adopted them without problems.

There’s actually a 1967 documentary about a small boy who was raised by a she-wolf. Even though some in the pack didn’t want him there she defended him until he could no longer stay. Amazingly at that point, a bear was overrun with paternal hormones and took over care of the young boy. Amazing story

If I remember the story correctly, the reason they kept dying was either they got eaten in the short term or her inability to feed them got them in the long term. It's kinda cute at first, but they're clearly toxic and one sided relationships so it's just sad how traumatized she is...
@NomSauce
@NomSauce 3 жыл бұрын
If you look at the lioness, she's clearly extremely malnourshed herself, her spine and ribcage (even individual ribs) are far, far too visible for an animal such as the lion. It's most likely why the consensus was that she was seperated from a pride in a traumatising manner, possible that her cubs where killed.

This cat reminds me of my dog Cain. She was a Siberian Husky me and my family adopted. One time while we were having a BBQ we kept watching her crawling under the deck and coming out covered in dirt. Eventually we decided to take a look at what she was doing. Laying right under the deck. We saw her carrying old veggies from the trash and feeding them to a bunch of baby rabbits. Apparently our neighbor's cat attacked the mother rabbit and Cain was just keeping them safe.

If anyone is curious, the phenomenon happening here is imprinting. The ducklings attach themselves to one of the first moving objects they see for the first 25 hours of their lives, which is normally their mother (in this case the cat). There are also studies that show that cats do not kill rats when the rat has been raised in the same environment as the cat (but they will kill other rats), and presumably this effect also applies to these ducklings.
@Nilsosmar
@Nilsosmar 4 жыл бұрын
Right -- but normally if a bird had the bad luck to imprint on a predatory carnivorous animal (such as a cat, which can't survive without eating meat), it would have a very short life. In this case, the birds imprinted on the cat, and because it had just given birth to kittens, she bonded back. i.e., avian imprinting meets mammalian hormonal bonding.

The cat/kittens clearly imprinted on the ducklings. When birds hatch they tend to "imprint" on the first thing they see, i.e they observed kittens latching/feeding, assumed cat was mum and they were kittens, and thus copied the behaviour. The cat being full of "mummy autopilot" hormones, accepted the extras in her litter as her own and that resulted in this wonderful yet bizarre 1 in a million chance bond 😌🥰❤ Just lovely!

Yes, but also, keep in mind that the lioness found 5 more calves to care for. Nature is a source of tough love, no sentimentality or sugaring the facts of life and death, both sides of the same hand. Nothing is ever lost, see? We're in a perpetual cycle of life, expressed in a most beautiful diversity of expression. If this helps? 😉🙋‍♀️
