Oh how I wish we could see the pink & white terraces again! Off topic - Digging for Britain series 11 ep 1 they searched for tephra in an abandoned Anglo-Saxon settlement, found it was covered by an ash cloud in the 6th century from a previously unknown Icelandic volcano eruption from Askja due to the chemical analysis - just amazing!

I've always loved how the tip of the north island is just this massive hodgepodge of overlapping calderas and volcanic centers, including several large VEI-7 producing features and a few VEI-8/Supervolcanos. I can't think really of a single other concentrated area on the planet so violently eruptive.

Yes the pink and white terraces was a considerable loss to New Zealand’s natural wonders. A bit like Uluru sinking beneath the sand in Australia. All we have are a few old grainy black and whites from early photography. Apparently it was quite a place and a big tourist draw, even back when tourism was a relatively new concept.

It was truly a unique and special place. It's a shame that it's been decimated beyond repair :(

Good to see 😅 your teaching on geology and geography from the well respected down and under. As I'm from the up and over we are no longer taught geology or geographies 😢.

Could you also maybe talk about the near complete loss of the Wairakei geyser valley and other geothermal sites due to exploitation?

When you mention a volcanic eruption as the possible apocalypse, people laugh. They have zero idea.
