How was I not taught about this in highschool American history? This should be highlighted as one of the major victories of the New Deal in every highschool in America.

My Grandfather went straight to WW2 after his stint in the CCC's. He saw people broke and begging for food during the great depression. He later became a wealthy man but still drove around a old chevy pickup truck. He was very tight with that money too.

My father was in the C.C.C. in 1938 and 39. He served in Warren, N.H. at that time. In 1940 and 41 he was between N.H. and Vermont. After Pearl Harbor he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in North Africa and Europe.

My Dad joined the CCC when he was 14 after his father had a massive heart attack and left him to be the breadwinner of the family. As they say he got to keep $5.00 per month as anything else went home to support his mother and two sisters. He was very proud of the work they did and as a boy I spent a lot of time at Fair Haven State Park in Upstate NY that my dad and other boys under the direction of the Army Corps Engineers. I would almost support something like this today were it not for the nagging suspicion this would just turn into a giant waste of public funds. I heard stories of the Americorps under the Clinton Administration that did not accomplish much of anything other than a lot of the participants partying on the public dole. Guess it was to get them ready for a life on welfare.

When some folk actually worked… but only because they had too in order to eat! They no longer had free labor, and had to get up off of their duff, and work, to eat. My father turned 6 years old in 1933, and because blacks were not eligible for welfare or any type of government assistance as whites were, he helped his 9 year old brother delivering papers to an amazingly well read black community in West Philadelphia, to bring home nickels and pennies to help his Dad put food on the table. So contrary to conservative propaganda and disinformation news sources, blacks were not even eligible for welfare until the late 1960’s. So who was actually in welfare at that time? The truth is unpopular among (false) conservatives, so we will leave it there!
