I don't think it's the camshaft hardness. Has anyone taken a camshaft from each manufacturer and had them tested? Also, doesn't CFmoto make the engine? It seems like they could have fixed the design before making another motorcycle with it. I’m wondering if CFmoto is using old 2018-2020 parts to build these motors. Have we seen posts about newer 2021+ 790s having the same problems? I know KTM updated the oiling design and finger followers.

I opened up the top ends of a 2023 KTM 390 and a 2023 Yamaha MT-03 and the difference is like night and day. And this is with Yamaha making them in their Indonesia factory. The Yamaha philosophies of “Monozukuri is Hitozukuri” means that the engineering and manufacturing that goes into creating products is also about the nurturing and development of the very personnel who create them. Yamaha CARE about their employees AND their customers as well as taking pride in quality manufacturing, assembly QC and performance and product longevity and reliability.

Whilst under warranty are the dealers stuck with having to use a particular brand of oil? Does the camshaft rely solely on oil jets for lube? Are the contact points between the rocker and cam too small? Are the valve springs too strong? Is the correct heat treatment process being used on the cam and all relevant contact points? So many possibilities.
@constantinosschinas450311 сағат бұрын
I have read that the issue affects only bikes made in Austria with Austrian VIN nuumbers. It was an offset drilling at the head that blocked oil flow. Who knows.

Compared to some KTM CAMs in the 890 engine. We need to consider oil starvation possibly combined with some other conditions which together create the problem. I'd argue that the use of different oil pressure release springs in variations of the 890 engine is due to meeting Euro 5 standards. The RC8C has an 890 engine but a higher rated spring producing higher oil pressure. Put that RC8C spring in the 890 Duke R engine and see the idle and RPM pressure increase significantly.

So maybe all the cams are Made in China? Well, after 26000km on my 2020 Duke I just had to do a valvecheck. There was a screen at the rear rhs of the cams. (totally clean) Run the engine just to see how the oil looked like when coming out of the jets. It squirted better than a...hmm, better leave that out. Everything looked fine, I'm glad to report. And yes, I did my own valvecheck since I needed to know more than a "mechanic" would tell me. Yes, "mechanic". I must say, they really don't examine, they just go by the book. And that's just don't good enough in this situation. I bet it's the oil journals that are not matched properly. Quite narrow holes and to meet these up properly, they can not be that much out of synch. A hole in the head, then the lower bridge and then the top bridge. The tolerences in these cases must be very small. So in my opinion it's not enough to change the cams. One must turn the engine over in order to see if the system lubricates properly. Cheers!

The only cams made in China are the cams in KTMs with Chinese VIN#!!!KTM North America put out a statement on October 24 explaining everything about the problem. Read it for yourself. In short is says if you have a KTM with an Austrian VIN# you could have the issue. If you have a KTM with a Chinese VIN# you won't have the problem. Also, the cams and followers are not the problem. The reason KTM was so steadfast in saying there is nothing wrong with the cams was when bench testing the cams on the machine to simulate wear it passed the test. The thing was that test supplied adequate lubrication for the test. It is an oil starvation problem. It is from a misaligned oil journal in the milling process. The journal was milled in from two directions and did not meet centered to each other. Hence the restriction. It is not a weak oil pump They also go on to say no Austrian VIN# KTMs have any Chinese manufactured cams or any parts from China in them. CFMoto started manufacturing KTMs after January 2023.

It oil pressure thats the problem. Cycle World did a test on that family of engines. 20psi to 5000 rpm, 60psi above 5000rpm. Thats why riders who try to conserve their bikes end up destroying them. And if you measure the oil pressure up in then cam box, its barely a dribble. Time to say goodby to that engine completely as it can't be fixed.
