It’s an adaptation. Not a recreation. The manga is more gritty and chaotic. The anime is much more grand and cinematic, slowing things down as the director knew that the manga’s pace would not work in the anime as it needs to slow down. Cleaner line work and a darker colour scheme. It’s still gritty and dark, just in its own way. Since in manga, you read at your own pace. Both versions of chainsaw man simply are showcasing the unique strengths of both mediums, of which neither can truly recreate.

I think the casting was excellent. Kobeni and Kishibe were exactly how I imagined them to sound like (and even better). Makima, Denji and Power fit their roles perfectly. And the same can be said for most side characters too. The only one whose casting I don't agree with is the Angel devil. I wanted Angel to have a more masculine voice, but I don't particularly mind what we got.

I shit you not, the moment I saw Kishibe in the manga, I pictured his voice would sound a lot like the guttural and low-energy tone of Vlov from Tsukihime Remake and Melty Blood. I was absolutely blown away to find out Kishibe was voiced by the same guy in the anime.

Thanks for the quick blurb about the author at the beginning. I started reading the manga after the first season ended and while I've been enjoying it I still haven't really felt like I've been able to appreciate it on the same level as a majority of the series' fans do and I just assumed it wasn't going to resonate with me personally as much. However, now knowing that the author draws heavy inspiration from Korean film, which is what most of my favorite movies are, everything that I've read so far has been recontextualized and I have a way stronger appreciation for what I've read up until this point. Another banger video, keep up the great work!

The messy lines, The sloppy facial expressions, The paneling are not captured in the anime because it is an anime and all the things you mentioned are aspects of a manga. Grit cannot be portrayed the same way in all mediums of storytelling. Hell, Grit is sometime portrayed differently within the same medium. The show was plenty gritty. It may not have captured it in its style all of the time but it definitely did in the feel of the show. Also a production can be clean and gritty at the same time. Half of David fincher's filmography is an example of that. Great video as always but thats weird take from you but just like you said, that's your opinion and i respect that. cant wait for season 2

I agree with you, it would be way harder, and honestly, I also believe that Mappa choosing this "cleaner", "realistic" and "cinematographic" art style is because Chainsaw Man is the next big thing in the Anime industry especially overseas, people that don't really watch anime watched Chainsaw Man as their first anime ever and most of those people were impressed how "realistic" it looked for an anime, I think that was the kind of impression that Mappa wanted, a unique and different artstyle could make "normal people" to don't like the show, having a simple but beautiful and very cinematic looking artstyle definitely make more people enjoy the show, especially those who are not familiar with anime

I think Berserk displayed the best examples for an issue like that, it's nearly impossible to mimic the linework faithfully when adapting it to animation since it's going from a single frame to 24 frames per second. The only way it would be possible to do it is for them to utilize even more CGI to put layers of crosshatch on top of what they already have, which I assume is even more time consuming

The anime is missing that grit because it literally cannot replicate it. Fujimoto is so fucking good at being a manga artist he’s perfect panels and page layouts make it impossible to replicate in an animated medium. Which is why I appreciate the anime even more for using the strengths of its own medium to try and recreate the same effect as the manga. Sometimes it falls short, sometimes it exceeds the manga and sometimes it’s the same. That’s my perspective on it anyway. Also I NEED to know your reasoning behind the Ed placements. I think it’s a fascinating list (one I don’t disagree with because a lot of the middle ones are hard to rank over each other tbh) and just watching a video where you just breakdown your opinion on each would be great, though understandable if you don’t wanna do that.

Bro, I totally been saying that same take about the grittiness since I saw the trailer. I feel like it needed that Studio Trigger/Gainax look to it. I always imagined CSM as a KLK/FLCL hybrid in terms of visuals. I'll never say thay MAPPA made it look bad it's actually the contrary but CSM would of benefited from using still frame shots to capture those really intense or comedic scenes vs. the heavy handed rotoscope that had a bunch of frames & unnecessary movement.

Chainsaw man anime look the way it does because the director desicion. In an interview he said, "..Fujimoto sensei loves movies, so I was convinced that if I could incorporate the essence of something realistic or cinematic, it would be good for the work." and "I cut all anime gag faces that would be impossible in real life." which is kinda a silly take because for me personally, it just make it more boring to look at especially something as hyper, crazy, wacky as Chainsaw man. Personally, I would prefer CSM to look something like Devilman Crybaby, Mob Psycho, or Bakemonogatari, but I respect the desicions they're making, the author likes it and in the end it's still a solid adaptation.

Say what you will about the direction of the anime, but I think they nailed it as far as imitating western cinematography without making it feel stale and samey. If they tried to make it feel like an overseas production, they definitely spiced it up enough to feel pretty much unlike anything I've seen while still having a welcome sense of familiarity. And probably the best thing about it is that it never felt redundant for a manga reader. I read the whole thing between the time episode 2 and 6 aired and I was glad that the adaptation actually felt like it added something to the experience. I rarely ever read the manga for anime that's already being adapted so I still have the drive to watch it after I'm done reading and I was worried that I'd lose interest in CSM after reading it and I am thankful to the heavens that this was absolutely not the case. Shit was kino af and I loved it to bits. And while many complained that it never felt as goofy or funny as the source material, I personally never found the manga to be really comedic as much as it was sardonic and deconstructive, so the tone of the anime never felt particularly out of place. It might not be the perfect adaptation, but it's a worthwhile experience for first-time watchers as well as manga readers. In that sense, I think Mappa had the right approach.

I think that the anime did a good job of the first chapters, as the real things start to happen right after this. In my opinion the anime version was better than the manga so far, but i think from this point on if the anime gets a second season, it won't live up to the sheer insanity and action of the original work. Like the bomb devil arc has so much stuff going on that no studio can create a whole season of anime if the point is to have brilliant animation. I too do think that it's not completely same as the manga which makes it better. With this you can enjoy the anime adaptation and also the manga. Also the anime is better also in a way that it has slow points. Tatsuki Fujimoto clearly meant to make an action packed and also emotional story, and the slow parts help a lot as the manga is in my opinion way too fast. So i suggest read the manga (i read it like in 4 hours).

Denji is honestly one of the most original shonen characters I've ever seen. The scene where he kicked Aki in the balls was my awakening to his greatness. Any normal shonen protag would have eaten a slice of humble pie from his senpai if he attempted to defeat him then trained to become stronger, but Denji really ain't your average mc, from his ethics to his motivations. He really is one of a kind.

@@martialspiritwarrior So what? You don't look at characters in a vacuum. Denji is particularly interesting specifically because he subverts tropes associated with shonen protagonists and even within the cast of his own story, he's a misfit that does his own thing with no regards to his role in the story or his relationship with most other characters. And even leaving that aside, I genuinely don't know what you mean by badly written, since most of his traits, be they negative or positive, are fairly deliberate.

@martialspiritwarrior 2 жыл бұрын
@VirgilTheMob So, a badly written character ruins the plot. How is Denji a misfit. This would make sense if he was bullied for being half devil, but he became one the same day he met Makima. The author writes Denji to be more of a victim of society than a misfit, always obeying orders and never making his own choices just like, well, a dog. Denji is the opposite of interesting, or at least his goal is. Denji made a contract with Pochita to live a normal life. Denji desires food, shelter, and boobs. Denji is badly written because Denji's goal needs to be living a normal life. Denji is still hunting devils, which is no different from his previous life. A normal life for a 16 year old boy should be going to school, living with a roof over his head, and enjoying his youth in general. A Denji with common sense would think of a way out of Makima's custody because when he first meets her, he has two choices: Death or be her dog. Therefore, Denji goal would be to escape in order to live a normal life. Another reason Denji is a badly written character is its anime adaptation . Ryu's adaptation of the anime removes the gag in Chainsaw man, focusing more on a serious tone, which, as a result, makes Denji unfunny and annoying. I never read the manga, but according to thousands of upset Japanese Chainsaw Man fans, they hated the anime adaptation. A big part of the aversion is how Denji relies heavily on gag. I had little laughs as I progressed into the anime. What I thought was a good anime became a clear disaster. Fujimoto's vision of Chainsaw Man is terrifying and unsettling, and although it does accomplish these feelings, the anime was missing the comedy. The hotel episode took me back to the horror of The Shining, but the characters ruined the experience as they were not at all interesting, and the same can be said with the main casts aside from Aki who is hands down the best character in the entire show. Himeno is a buzz killer in the show, being a bad influence on Aki and telling her sob story, which helps to make the episode unsettling. The other two were bland and annoying, not giving any laughs. Kobeni bears a resemblance to Shelly Duvall's character in The Shining, in the nature of her meekness and timidness, as well as holding a knife. In contrast, Kobeni's performance was jarring to watch. Her lousy performance of fear was all in the moment, and her expressions were insincere and superfluous. If this was meant for comedy purposes, I was not laughing or entertained. I won't bother with the new guy. 2 boring, annoying characters, and 1 unlikable chick. Imperatively, it is Denji's job to be one to stand out as a gag. He sleeps in a bed while everyone figures out how to escape. The whole episode wasn't interesting besides the unsettling atmosphere. I was mostly annoyed by the characters' failure attempts to be comedic. I think that whole episode needed a different story. Perhaps they were all dreaming. Denji, unintentionally, is the first one to escape by sleeping in the dream world. That way, more focus would be on the new characters. And then they can pay homage to The Shining. Speaking of which, a third reason why Denji is badly written is that he is not a dynamite character. He has no real ambition, no decision-making. Although the author uses dynamic to have Denji see the mundane of his goals and have Denji become his own master, it's not okay to have an uninteresting protagonist who doesn't move me. Why not have Makima be a devil tamer. Why not have Denji be on oath to serve Makima, unable to escape or kill Makima. Power can also be in a similar situation as Denji. Make Denji more of a loyal dog rather than a mindless dog. This would make Denji an interesting character. Subverting expectations is a double-edged sword. While it can deconstruct tropes and add twists, it can be used as shock value and even make no sense to the story. That is to say Denji makes no sense. In conclusion, Denji is a badly written character.

So basically, you wanted the anime to be comical and gritty. But I loved how the actual anime was realistic and quite cinematic with real-life movements and whatnot, at times I even thought I was watching a live action or something, as a manga reader myself, I enjoyed the anime thoroughly and had no complaints other than some goofy cgi in the first few episodes (it got better) and the fact that it was only 12 episodes for this season. Just when the story started picking up, it ended, now we have to wait 2 years for another season : ( I feel like it kinda killed the momentum, but the part where they ended was a good ending point so it's fine i guess.

20:40 I feel that way about most modern anime. They look so bright and clean that it kills some of the impact. Im not saying they're bad because of it, just that in the transition towards the "modern anime aesthetic" something precious was loss in exchange. And I imagine it wouldn't be worth the effort to gain it back, as it would alienate current audiences that absolutely love the shining colours palette (there is nothing wrong with that). I sound like an ol' boomer talking and I'm 23, goodness im pretentious lol.

So far as the grittiness, honestly, I think it would have been damn near impossible to really convey the style of the manga in animation. Mostly for the same reasons that Junji Ito's style is very difficult to capture in animation. While it may be a bit messy in Fujimoto's case, his work is also very heavily-detailed. The sheer amount of work that would go into really replicating that in motion would be insane. Attack on Titan has occasionally captured some of that in its anime and done decently with it, but it's generally only in small parts. The only other example I can think of where a studio really tried to do that was in Berserk 2016, and we all know how that turned out. I feel like it's definitely a valid thing to miss, but there probably wasn't really anything that could have reasonably been done about it.

I'm gonna be honest, after watching a couple of your videos you've become the only anituber I like. These days it feels like every anime reviewer is trying to become the reincarnation of DemolitionD, but your way of making videos is refreshing, mostly because you humor is great and because you actually know how to give your opinions in a genuine manner, while understanding anime as a medium. In fact, I don't agree with like 70% of what you said in this video, but the way you speak your mind is the only thing I want in an anime youtuber. Regarding the topic, I think that a good anime adaptation should recreate to the viewers the same feelings the readers had when they were reading the manga, its an adaptation after all, it should capture the feel of the source material. Adaptations are generally worse than the source material, but people don't really care, cause even if they are inferior, it still feels like the original work. Take for example Jojo part 6 (no spoilers btw). Did the last 12 episodes look like a powerpoint presentation? Yes. Did I care? Yes. Did I have a great time nonetheless? Fuck yeah, because even if the animation sucks, the production still makes it feel like Jojo's, which is something that I can't say regarding Chainsaw Man. Also, about Fujimoto having a big part in the production? not sure about that, I mean, in the same interview where he talked about the Avengers he also said "I love anime, but I don't have any experience in making it, so I am leaving it all to them." so yeah. Anyway, great video.

End of the day season 1 was still a 8/10 with hope that season 2 will improve upon what season 1 did. Episode 12 was the only episode I truly felt captured the essence of what CSM is so hopefully mappa continues going in that direction but I guess we'll see

17:05 fr. Instead of being flashy, they focussed more on brutality and weight for the fights My fav devil is definitely the eternity devil mostly cus the eternity devil arc is still my fav arc, and the fight is just hilariously badass lol Also most rough styles in general are kinda impossible to translate into animation tbh. This happens to pretty much every adaptation lol.

I think this is the first time i've disagreed with you. The 3D looks great to me. also, the example you showed at 18:25 was actually 2D animated. the animator in charge of that shot posted the animation breakdown on his twitter. but yeah, i guess it goes to show that if viewers can't tell what's 2D and what's 3D, then was the 3D good? hell yeah it was good.

sure your average joe wont be able to properly tell what is actually cgi, rotoscoped and trad 2D, but they will still be able to tell something is off. which is how you get the reaction of a very large portion of the audience here. if the cgi was actually good, your dumbest media consoomers wont even be able to tell there was much cgi at all. most probably dont even know the bg's in pretty much every scene are cg.

@@Deid i agree. im just saying if you feel "something is off" from 2D animation while trying to spot 3D, and classify it as such, it just proves that the majority of the anti 3D crowd don't know what the fuck they're talking about.
