The day 3/4 of the reddit heavy sealclubbers start pulling a sundy toward a tower fight, or they start at least attempting to save that base that was outnumbered by 30-70, or by the very least not ignoring people's request to hitch a ride, I will start taking them a bit more cyriously.

The most seen Big Grugs may be impressive, but no Grug is as large (and yet so ignored) as the medic with a 0.2 K/D who will die to get a revive or two, or the engineer who spends all day following a MAX or standing next to some tanks, or the infiltrator who spends 10 minutes to get to the top of a hill just so that they can spot everyone, and even the heavy who uses their LMG to suppress instead of get kills. A huge thank you to everyone who plays support roles to make the game more fun for the rest of us. Helping your teammates > kill farming.

Cyrious I agree with you most of the time, and I mostly agree with you here. But I'd like to say something in BWAE's defense. Your criticisms of the outfit are fair; they are sentimental about their numbers, but they really do try to stick to an honor code. They seek out under popped fights, and limit their choices of loadout (avoiding the use of things like shotguns, MAXes, and AI vehicles). They make exceptions now and again because deliberately gimping yourself will get you burnt out fast, but for the most of the time they really do adhere to the tenants of Bushido. And, they have made deliberate efforts to work with new players to help them improve. They've recently rotated in SKL squads during their ops to train them in infantry point holding, and we're working toward a similar dynamic of working with them with my own outfit (GSLD). They understand that not everyone can go all the way, but they're making the effort anyway. As for the sarcasm and shitposting outside of the game itself, I feel like the community doesn't end at Auraxis. It's Planetmans who read the Planetmans' reddit and we know how to interpret the salt and sarcasm that finds its way there. I think part of their criticisms of you aren't even directly criticisms of you, but an expression of an annoyance they have with zerglings (incorrectly) citing you as validation of the tactic. I will say that skill is not a tool the same way overpopulating a base is a tool. That's something intrinsic to the player and I think that should be considered separately. Yes, organization and cohesion take effort, but the kind of investment it takes to increase your individual skill to is much more than the level of investment it takes to group up some pop, or walk up to a terminal and press "E" for a force multiplier, to have the same effect that that individual skill grants. That's why I think there's more merit in valuing individual mechanical skill over other forms of advantage. Working on aiming, movement, positioning, and map awareness is more intrinsic than any other kind of advantage--be it pop, coordination, the base you happen to be fighting at, or the presence or absence of vehicles. At the most fundamental level, we interact with the game by pressing keys and sliding our mouse in a precise way, and that's where our absolute control ends. Beyond that, everything else is contingent on how other people have decided to play and the circumstance of Auraxis. I feel like lopping in "my skills are higher" with other forms of advantage is not quite it, because that's the asymmetry an engagement should measure, and I'd consider that exempt from the list of "all things held equal" when you want to set a fair fight. That can be indicated by the ability to farm out those big Grug numbers on demand. But sometimes you end up in circumstances where that's trivially easy--you're in a spot where you can farm mechanically lesser players being funnelled at you, usually with some kind of disadvantage on top of that. Or, it can be indicated when you find yourself head to head with another big Grug, and you need to see on the spot who can move their mouse and press their keys in the better way. But sometimes you catch the other big Grug with their pants down; they're in the middle of a reload, they aren't at full health, they are in a worse position, they don't happen to be running their preferred weapon, they were shooting someone else, and so on. And the different skill sets you mentioned at the beginning also sometimes detract from the engagement--sometimes a player's skill lend toward a proficiency at something that doesn't really show in a 1v1, but has merit in and of itself. My point (and something you've gotten at and I'd consider it your point too) is that no matter what metric you pick, it's somehow incomplete or biased. And when you decide to measure several things, how you weight them when you put them together is chosen in a arbitrary way. Let them be sentimental about their high-octane fragging. But catching another skilled player out on live isn't the end-all-be-all of skilled play, either. Getting frags and winning 1's tend to indicate skill but what you look for and what you value are still arbitrary, and happenstance can make either easier than it should be on live.

As someone once said, "Everything's fair in love and war" war is completely fair, no one wins because they just did nothing to help in the fight. Any tactics employed, zerging, individual skill, squad deployment, squad loadout. Everything matters. Everything is fair. (What isn't fair though is you hold non combatants hostage but that has more to do with real life rather than this game) As curious discussed, this power factor held by a side predicts the flow of battle and i wholeheartedly agree. This is the essence of war. Observing and reacting to the tide of battle.

From a guy that has only played this game for less than a week, i have no idea what you talk about a lot of the time. Even so i love your attitude and the respect you show to others. I am also a guy with the dex of an elephant and I am that seal that gets clubbed a lot, but I can tell you, i love this game. I will also emphasise one word in that last sentence.... GAME!. I watch a lot of your and other people's videos, on what i should be doing to get better and i go out and try to implement them. Most the time i fail but i usually have fun doing it. I will never join any clan because some nights i might just want to sit on a hill sniping at people and not hitting anything until i run out of ammo and have to redeploy to get some more. Never been a fan of anyone telling me what i should be doing in RL never mind a game., i pay my money i make my own choices. I may, in the future, join a clan when i feel i can contribute or have any sort of skill set i can offer. I guess what i'm trying to say is, it doesn't matter to me what numbers on a stat page say. They are just numbers. What matters to me in game like this is the atmosphere of the game. If it is toxic then the fun element is removed from the game and so far i not encountered any of this. luv you guys xxx

I know those dudes too. I haven't played with them in a hot minute and they kicked me from their JOKE outfit when I couldn't keep up. Those same dudes were the ones that ended up breaking up the 382nd after they got a few good kicks in the server vs server Planetside Battles things. However, the leader told us when it was created to not think of ourselves as the best or good. Even if you're not and keep yourself humble. I've always had my respect for Shades, but I think after construction and the redicule of MCOR there was a bit of a tinge. At that point I had been kicked out, but they let me stay around because I had made friends with a few of them. I wanted to get better, but I was around 16 at the time and I had High School to worry about so I didn't make the trainings, but I'd watch anything Shades put up just to see what ops I missed that week. Then that stopped. I didn't hear from them and I went to play on my xbox with my irl friends. I also transitioned away from Planetside and played Arma 3 and found a good group of people to play with there. I still respect Shades for all he taught me when I was in the 382nd. He was a good platoon leader and was able to communicate well with other outfit leads that also had multiple platoons. To end it. They had a great deal of the Bushido rules and I still think Shades has that in them, but the elitism took in a while ago and really tainted their way of thinking. It was sad to see the people I had so much fun with become the one thing that they hated.

This is what my outfit is all about. Take a bunch of aging, medium skill players (with a handful of extremely high skill) and do our best, leaning on teamwork to have the most fun. We don't swing the biggest clubs in a twelve person only outfit, but we enjoy teaching the game to enthusiastic players. A good night is a night where we got into evenly matched fights and barely pulled out on top, getting our outfit name on the bases. Loved the comment about Planetside Arena being exactly what the loudest players asked for. Spot on.

This comment is only in reference to 25:40: BWAE got a squad together outside of regular ops, waited through the population Queue to get on to TR. Good on you for trying to help them out. I tried to help them out a bit too. I think most of the high IVI players that farmed them honestly didn't do it intentionally. They were just out looking for the next fight, and there happened to be a lot of easy fodder there. It was exacerbated by the platoon leader making some bad calls on the front end, so they just got trapped until they formed up in a ball that could actually make it through a tower base. Grey Heron is tough nut to crack as well because the entrances are so limited. But it does put the plight of the less skilled player, attacking very difficult bases to enter, on display.

There were several BWAE stuck fighting them because they crushed the server population so bad that non-members played the opposing faction or *not at all* that night. But the vast majority of BWAE are members, who waited through the shorter queue to go try and help. We were on our discord that night communicating with Drew who shared our concern about the veterans mass seal clubbing the mass group of new players.

Honestly, the hour of largely unedited footage was very helpful for me. I know you call it unskilled play, but for someone like me who can't even understand the concept of, "aim for the head," without constantly tweaking my sensitivity back and forth, trying to find a sweet spot that will make me functional... well, there was a lot there. A lot of movement and decision-making that I could go back over to find out what were good decisions that kept you from dying, where to go and who to shoot at, how to make sure you got out of disadvantageous situations (a skill I've yet to contemplate, let alone master). You call it unskilled play, and it was, by your definition, but it was still an opportunity to observe the use of skills that might help me function in PS2.

Very good points as always. Now, a question: how can I improve my mental state when I’m playing the game? I often find myself getting angry over my own lack of skill, the aggravating HESH or A2G spam, or other things I can’t necessarily control, like the game’s performance and my crummy ISP. As Wrel pointed out a few years ago, it takes quite a lot of practice to be able to control my anger, and I’m working on that. But are there any tips you have for helping me keep my mental state in tact when it feels like everything is working against me? Shooting practices, aiming for the head, muscle memory, it all goes out the window when the frustration goes through the roof because it often feels like I’m on my own, or my one platoon is against the entirety of the enemy’s forces. The anger builds, the rage starts, and I end up quitting and taking a break, even during prime time alerts. Planetside 2 has been one of the most harrowing challenges of any game I’ve ever played, and yet, I feel like I’m SO close to being a decent player, and being an asset to my team, but still so far away from that goal

PS2 is not an easy game ... I am not an skilled player ... But to know the Bases and its immediate peripheral helps a lot ... flanking is necessary to don't get crushed by crossing fire ( breath, before spawn, check the map and How The enemy and allies are moving on ... Then, flank ... To get into an organized Squad is not common ... Therefore, don't expect too much ... But enjoy when it happens ... disorganized players don't tend to cover angles and Your back ... with time, you will know snipers "sweet spots for farming spawn rooms" ... ( generally, change to the secondary spawn room tends to be a safety choice ) ... There are lot of strategies that depends on the circumstances ... Therefore, to check the Map and The Battle Data before spawn tends to help to prepare oneself to those circumstances ... The Minimap is essential for in game awareness ... ... and don't worry .... Lonely Wolfs in improvised Squads Dies a Lot ... Lot of the Deaths are because The enemies got multiple angles and one is alone against more than 2-3 players flanking around Your position ... Again, The Game is not easy and lonely wolfs playing in The Vanguard or Defending Lonely Bases attacked by multiple combined forces, die and get crushed a lot ... Plus, VS armaments tends to don't favor Lonely Wolf profiles but in organized Squads and zerging becomes powerful ... ... Your question have room to produce a book ...

Try and change your mindset, while dieing to hesh or a2g esfs sucks it’s often times preventable. Every time you die ask yourself” why did I die” and the answer isn’t “fucking hesh shot me” it could be “I tried a flanking route that exposed me to enemy armor” or “ I stepped out of a building to far trying to chase a kill” or even” I was standing in a part of a building enemy tanks can land shots in”. This really helps cope with anger because it shifts focus from no skill, frustrating weapons to I made a mistake. Sometimes though your deaths are unpreventable that’s just planetside, like dieing to a grenade that doesn’t have an indicator. But being able to write off most of the frustrating deaths as your own fault should help you improve at the game and deal with anger.

@@iamtj111 See, this is how I usually try to cope. But the new killcam often raises more questions than it answers. I had an NC sniper somehow shoot my C4 flash through a wall, not once, but FOUR TIMES. And then there are the times when I've been behind a wall for easily 1-2 seconds and still somehow get shot. Or how about this, yesterday, I was hiding on top of some boxes at the top of some stairs so Id have the drop on my opponent. A BR 100 turns the corner, and I get headshot 4 times before I even get 3 shots off. I know most of this is down to latency, but I'll be darned if this doesn't happen more in PS2 than any other game I play

Also what really changed the game for me was a player by the name of Sipherix, he is on emerald (multiple factions) and I think you two would get along if you ever come across him.

The micro and macro flow was already solved in the first game but for V2 the powers that be decided they knew better and wanted to create Battlefield side. Remember the wide open flag cap bases, remember when esamir opened to be driven over at all angles? There were lots of suggestions and complaints leveraged at this very issue of spawn mechanics and vehicle interaction in beta. Malorn also was very vocal about it while working on the dev team. Static tower > Capture Ramparts > Capture Inner Courtyard > Only Infantry + Maxes duke it out inside for the capture point > Vehicles and whatever else hold / attack soft spawns (AMS / Sunderer) or tower (hard spawn). Daybreak could do the above with a new continent release.

BWAE have their problems, and a lot of members left after the big controversy. But I'm thankful that they and some others have helped me to learn to enjoy the game, and to want to get better at it. They taught me how to do very basic things - lower mouse sensitivity, lower settings to minimum, etc. so that even though I'm getting 20-30fps in any fight worth anything and I can't hit the broad side of a barn, I'm at least not having a really awful time. Can't play in a squad or a platoon without feeling terribly pressured, but what I learned from those folks helped me find my own playstyle. It was nice.

Training on the go is a foundation going forward, but also giving direction to players at their experience level without being condescending is crucial. Getting comfortable working with very low skill players next to players that might as well be on god mode is needed. If more skilled players can seek out mentor squads and keep the corner tight can help them get experience without loosing the fun or being wrecked too often.

22:30 What you talk about here, it just happened to us today, we (VS) got ignored all the afternoon and had boring fights till the alert, to the point that we had 70% territory when the alert began. My friends and I (4) knew we would be double teammed by NC and TR so they can get that big piece of cake we had. We first tried to focus sunderers to slow them down. We chose to focus the one growing the fastest and try to slow them down, destroying beacons and sunderers to slow their inevitable advance. The problem is that for 1 sunderer you destroy, 3 more are coming. One base you capture, 2 others are lost, for one objective you secure two more are lost. And it's like this for one hour and a half. One of my friends got crazy mad about VS, TR and NC blaming everybody to be coward farmers. I get your point of view, saying that planetside offers tools and tricks to counter this. But you still need people for that. 4 players is just not enough. You can shake them a little but that's it. And most players are playing with one or two friends watching double repair opponent galaxies dropping full squads on bases, if you're lucky enough hold them for more than 2 minutes. So yeah I get your point of view but man it's frustrating when you know giving your best is meaniningless. It's even worse for individual players. Thankfully after a 5H session of aneurysmic tryharding the game hands you 100 iso and 150 certs for your loss.

I am tired of people in an overpop taunting you and saying how much better they are than you, when they are camping your spawn room with every vehicle they have and in squads together, and you are playing on a potato, solo. Like c'mon. Great video so far. Edit: And most people get it wrong. Zerging in itself isn't wrong. They think its the go-to, when they have other power despairities they can use. Whenever we are zerged by people who are taunting us, I always tell them that if they zerg us, they are going to lose their bases in the end. VS laughed at me. After all, they only had 14 points. When they got too close, we retaliated, and we took our bases back, and it was because they wouldn't listen.

I find zerging extremely frustrating, but it’s Maybe because the server I play on has quite low population. Some faction decides to send all of their soldiers to one base, and you have 2 choices : either you defend with all your population and you get crushed by the 3rd faction, or you continue to defend against the 3rd faction and you get crushed by the zergs.

@@ufhb6649 I understand totally. I hate it too, but at the same time, there is a very good solution to beating one. Y'know what it is? Leave the battle and try to backcap them from another lattice. Distraction.

I just revel in seeing huge clusters of TR smash against a stalwart NC defence of the crown, and the god damn distinct rolling death that can be heard as a column of Magriders come pouring across the sands of Indar. Even with the shitty PC I have I can't help but look at it as a tank support off in the distance with my pathetic .24 k/d and think about it as an event. My bloody Steam Screenshots are filled with these. As if it were some poor TR Veteran looking through photo albums. I think it is necessary to expand on the position of good players as well as state what they get wong. The error in what you think is skilled, the vocabulary I would use instead of power, and why good players don't respect zerging. Then, I have some more to actually add onto your opinion about game balance. After that, I might as well just list a couple more things. What is Skill in PS2? Skill is about being able to do something well. Maybe in a video game that might be relative, but it means you do something well. It requires an investment in the form practical practice ( which could be any % of your gameplay). Not just being a function of time, but a function of how you optimize your training. This is encompassed around positioning, movement, and shooting. There are three components there because there is a macro and micro level to the movement of someone in any game period. Farming multiple lesser skilled, or bad players is going to require a certain amount of aim and movement above a certain threshold, and then is determined by positioning based on awareness of EVERYTHING around you. Being able to play around a zerg and farm is actually skillful despite not really making too much of an attempt to shoot insanely well. I don't really feel that you acknowledged how positioning makes or breaks a farmer in any case ( whether it be air, armour, or infantry), and that there is value in such independent thought. I would agree that it is not always 100% essential to capturing a point, but I would argue that the lower you get into numbers, the more it matters for every player on a side with low numbers. Being able to recognize power positions and battle flow on a macro scale within a base is very abstract and much harder than simply just attaining over 900 ivi. Consistently getting the stats that you got in that one session is a representation of the level of thought that goes into positioning without that much effort ( which is why the challenge was issued in the first place). I personally don't think one, two, or even three sessions mean much skill wise. Instead, it is more important that you would have that consistent result over a couple months worth of gameplay to really satisfy the elitist in me. 1v1 skill matters, but not that much compared to the benefit of positioning with more than 10 combatants in the area. Why Good Players Don't Respect Zergs I think some of it is a matter of perception, but it comes down to the investment of the players that are fighting to not only get better as an outfit, but individually. Like I said above, skill is a function of applicable time invested. If you do not try to get better, you won't get better. And maybe some guy will try and wave his big infantry e-dick on me and meme my ass, but idc what they say since I have my own, and it is bigger than all but a few. A lot of the issues here in ps2 are that everyone knows everyone. All the good players in their respective categories who have poured time into getting better are not really tired of zerging, but the mentality that it breeds. It is a weak mentality that demonizes good players rather than respecting for the ability to recognize patterns of movement that no one else can see. It is a hierarchy of skill, and elitist, but not for any toxic reasons. The respect should be acknowledged, and returned to the newbies. The only real problem is a lack of humility between the two groups. It personally does annoy me that people think I am a magical wizard when they see me on the battlefield, and I didn't pump thousands of hours into my gameplay to make it good, and then in the same vein call me a shitter right after for being better than them in a 1v1. And the misinformation spread by even just decent players is criminal. I have no issue with anyone being bad at any aspect of the game, it is just that they shouldn't try and explain things that they might not know with absolute confidence ( like this entire speech LOL). Granted my own opinion in this long winded wall of text is also subject to being wrong ( even though I do think I am right). Game Balance I only really have to say that we should be making skill more of a factor, learning easier ( as in not bad in game resources outside of community), and trying to incentivize balancing out a desparity in force between two factions. Vocabulary I would rather characterize an imbalance between two groups as a desparity in force rather than a desparity in power. Just makes me happier :) Conclusion I think you miss the mark on why good players are the way they are, and I agree with some sentiments that you have towards the skilled veteran community. I also think that the parameters of the challenge were quite flawed ( I remember seeing the post way back when). It isn't fun to fight overwhelming force, no matter the kind, and as much as that makes ps2 unique, it also makes it chaotic and undesirable for people who want a more controlled environment that they can actually affect. I really wish there was a better middleground, but I think that more in game population and full servers can minimize this entire issue of good vs bad, zerg vs non-zerg. Also, BWAE are not a zergfit, and zerging doesn't necessarily have to do with over popping. That can be fleshed out another time. I spent way too much typing :D.

I don't consider myself a top player in the game by any stretch. I know my place and I own it; neither a big or little grug. What I play for is the scale, the planes whooshing overhead, the uneven nature that is war. Seldom has any historical conflict been between opposing forces of equal strength, equipment, and experience, and Planetside reflects this. I do what I can to put up a fight, and sometimes I see my one-man-outfit's flag atop a base after a 100+ man fight. Most of the time, you don't even see me on the scoreboard. But where I fit in is being the guy that breaks a stalemate, when I rush a choked up death trap to be mowed down, then watch my little grugs swarm in behind me facing empty magazines that were dumped on me. Doesn't make me a top player, I can't fly worth a darn and I'm clunky in a tank, but seeing a fight break in favor of my faction after a calculated sacrifice is rewarding. Stats mean little to nothing in my camp, I like to see contributions against the odds. Same reason I avoid riding a zerg wave; any faction can win a 96-12 blitzkrieg, but there's no fun for me there. Planetside is about the disparity of war, and that's what I play it for.

aaaaaah sometimes some people take PS2 very very very (VERY) to seriously. i can tell you i passed my BR 100 by resupply allies when i was dead so ye pretty good "skill" hein. XD but anyway a litle exemple to be less serious: i consider my self as a "casual pumpkin hunter" XD recently i have been searching for pumpkins... pumpkins, pumpkins more and more pumpkins on my turbo flash. and from far away i saw a NC flash shooting me with a candy canon i was like "ah funny" and he follow me and for sure he was friendly then i saw a pumpkin i just stop and leave the pumpkin for him. at any moment and if i was like some people (you know what i mean) i could kill him and be like " yeah i kill you eheheh you suck i'm best f**k you" BUT NO ! we team up and we hunt pumpkins toghether. at the end we have unlock everything we wanted and ye. Happy End. moments like this are a super big fresh air and that's good very good. let's make Auraxis more alive even if we kill each other for years. and so if we do the math here. if i was like "some people" i would have 1 more kill for one of my weapons and be a piece of **** to the eyes of the NC friendly flash guy. and in the real way. many reward and XP by destroying pumpkins and jack-O-lanterns , a bunch of good and funny moments. and +1 good friend..... :D

Sometimes organized wont win. For example, I run a small outfit of a highly organized, skilled about 8 to 10 people who play regularly. We got a base built on Esamir west of Rime Analytics...the VS came at us...and could never break the base. TR joined in and took over our tower. We cleaned them right out. They came BACK, retaking the tower failed...despawned the tower. Ensuing chaos among the TR and just cleaned them right up with no problem because we ambushed them technically. We had fewer numbers but we got the drop on them, even killed their galaxy when they came back in to try and land again. VS killed the silo...and we got another silo up and running with more cordium and the VS couldnt break it then. Yes...numbers are a good thing (although this is the only thing SKL does) but organized, skilled, groups can take out larger groups with ease...if they are playing right or find the right group such as an armor convoy with little armor protection and you got a heavy armor convoy with air protection. Thats your favor not theirs. Im proud to say, I am one of the best Vanguard players the NC has on Emerald. Although I do branch out quite a bit.

oof, SKL. Another of my least favorites... Then again, most of my least favorites are VS so... at least SKL isnt super skilled. BWAE has skills and zergs

@@avaliantsoul5408 A few of SKL have some skill. Ill grant them that. My main VS nemesis has been 24/7. Many of them have given me amazing fights win or not. Took only 5 of them to bring down a 4 man base. Took SKL a full platoon to do that to one of my bases.

@@avaliantsoul5408 But I can tell you this - my outfit has kind of made it a habit to target SKL on sight because of this. Mainly because all they can do is Zerg...so we make a habit of killing them on sight. One of our alerts we won...SKL was coming in and me and my outfit was running Skyguards and we lit those fools up like a christmas tree! Several galaxies coming in and you got two Reavers in the Sky with 4 Skyguards on the ground! They didn't last long. Even had a base built right outside the Bio Lab, the zerg hit the bio lab...the open platoon I was running went straight for their base...and we wiped it off the map, with them in it. Didn't take us long either. That was...August of this year. We won Esamir, and all because we stopped that Gala zerg dead in its tracks. One got to drop, but it didn't matter a bit. lol One of my favorite wafflestomps of SKL to this day.

@@adityajain16701 The T5-AMC is one of my favorite carbines. It has an amazing recoil pattern, projectile velocity, and RoF. Plus it's only 650 certs. It's mostly for mid to long ranges, but it's hipfire is still good enough to make areas tenable in cqc.

@@CMDRCyrious they've been a pain in AOD's side for a long time. most people (on TR at least)know them as an actually (somewhat) skilled zergfit, so basically, everyone's least favorite outfit. also tend to be kind of toxic. not racist (usually), but lots of teabagging and gloating
