how to free up that frozen end of your whisker pole: 1) Drill a small hole (1/8" or so) in the end of the hook, in line with the pin. 2) Use a rod or punch through the hole to hammer on the latch and move it. 3) Remove whatever retains the latch, so you can remove it completely and clean up the hole. 4) Read it some more poetry. I'm guessing its galvanic corrosion that froze it up so its probably pretty snug in there. Hammering it directly is probably the only way it'll budge.

Spot on.👍 I’d just add that once it’s moved a little, tap it back in the closed direction occasionally and keep adding a drop of thin lube as it moves further. Diesel fuel works as well as any other penetrant and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper. It may be worth standing it in a small container of fuel for a day or two before you try freeing it. The one other thing that can help is heat, a blowtorch is ideal but a minute over a stove burner works fine too. Good luck with it, been there, fought that, they usually give up with perseverance and you’ve got that in buckets!

@@WindHippieSailing if you're allergic to penicillin, try propolis. Usually you can get it from beekeepers. As for galvanic corrosion, ultrasound and vinegar. Hope your rib is better...

I agree with Dan about showing the bad parts of sailing alone. People contemplating doing it need to know the bad as well as the good. I'm glad you have antibiotics with you now and that your rib injury has healed. Take care of yourself Captain. The thoughts and prayers of many are with you.

I love Vanuatu and have been in a lot of those anchorages you show. I think I remember the same clearing shed from 40 years ago but they didn’t call it biosecurity then. Rib injuries are a bugger, cracked one of mine in a similarly silly manner, a loud bang followed by three months of pain. I hope you have it behind you. No need to be shy about tough times, if you don’t put some of them in those of us who are also crazy enough to do this will be wondering what we do wrong.

I agree with you on not buying fancy crap for every project. I always have a habit of buying blocks, shackles, and other bits and bobs at boat yard sales and the like. If someone needs a block or you need one for making small projects, i always rummage thru the extra bits and mostly find what i need. Its easy to soend a pile of money for non critical items. I like your comment about how the old-timers got by with only cordage and wood, but it's important to note that most of them sank because of shipworms, fire, or the limitations of weather forecasting and navigation at the time. I guess the fact that most sailing back then was driven by commercial or military pressure for them, also... "get-there-itis" has sent many vessels to the bottom.

If you were hurting for that long you must have cracked at least one rib. Yep, you need to stop and rest to heal quicker, but there are things you need to do and most of them hurt which in turn delays healing. But don’t worry, 10 more years you can buy an AI crew member 😂
