Fun fact: The Jordan that won that day is still in Brazil, straped to a wall of a mansion belonging to a famous TV host, Ex GT4 driver and F1 fan. And this guy has put in his testament that when he pass away, the car will belong to Giancarlo Fisichella.

Thanks Josh for drawing attention to Fisi's talent of hauling dreadful cars to places they shouldn't be. The unfortunate years as Alonso's teammate tend to be the only ones mentioned by fans now when talking of Fisichella, people really need to remember that he was an absolute master of driving midfield and backmarker cars. No-one else could have got a podium in the 2001 Benetton or the 2003 Jordan. Guy was my hero as a kid because he did things you couldn't believe with inferior machinery. Just such a shame Alonso destroyed his entire legacy.

People drastically overinflate Fisichella's slump at Renault. Fisi underperformed due to tensions between him and the team. Even the whole "2 seconds slower a lap" thing was nonsense. As soon as he was yelled at to pick up the pace over the radio, he did. He shortened the gap immediately. Fisi was NOT slow.

I attended this race in 2003. First time traveling to Brazil and asked my friend to get us tickets for the Grand Prix. Saturday with Rubinho winning pole, the crowd was so loud, but rain on Sunday on the drive to the track, trying to find places to stand, we found that we could only get to bottom of the Senna S, which was perfect for the carnage in front of us later. I saw Fisichella pass for the lead (could see it from our seats) and crossed the finish line in the lead. Get back to friends home and saw the crash by Alonzo on TV. He got lucky. Rubens pulling out was just sad to the home fans, but Fisichella’s win was a great memory.

I read an article a few years ago that claimed to have solved part of the mystery of the junkyard of turn 3. Apparently the giant dishwasher of the VIP hospitality were cycling at a rate of finishing one full load roughly every 9-10 laps. Whenever they released their soapy and greasy wastewater it would immediately overflow because the drainage system was already overwhelmed by all the rain. So most of that water would float down the backside of the end of the main straight, right across the track in turn 3. Whichever driver was unlucky to hit that wave of greasy and soapy water at the wrong moment would end up in the outside barrier.

A very clever strategy, the Bridgestone intermediates being the right tyre to be on at the right moment and some excellent driving from Fisichella got him the win. Jos Verstappen in the Minardi was on the same strategy and tyres, and was ahead of Fisichella on the road, but binned it at turn three - it could've at least been a Minardi podium, if not a win!

@@Undivided-X it's true that Webber wasn't at his best in 05 but the team also completely failed him. I'm glad they did a makeshift ceremony for giving the trophy to Fisi. Some people criticize it for being so low-key compared to an actual podium, but many sports would just have the erroneous winner send over the trophy. F1 has the goodwill to make a big deal out of honoring the actual winner while doing so. Yeah, it may not have been a proper podium celebration, but I'd rather they do that than NOTHING.

This was the only Jordan F1 win I witnessed live, as I had only started watching less than 2 years earlier. I think this might be the only F1 race in history where no driver was stood in their correct position during the podium ceremony. Also an interesting fact about this race - during one of the ad breaks one of the absolute greatest tv adverts ever made debuted on ITV (UK channel). It was Honda’s “The Cog”. I think you should talk about Australian pro motocrossers Jett and Hunter Lawrence. Their story alone, of them and their family packing up, selling everything, moving to Europe, and then packing up and selling everything AGAIN, moving to America, working with Johnny O'Mara, both having a rough rookie year (with Jett having a season-ending wreck at Anaheim in 2019, and Hunter never finishing in the top 5 all year in MX2 in Europe in 2017). But in the end, all the sacrifice, hard work, and tragedies on the track finally paid off for them in 2021. They got sponsored by Red Bull, they got factory rides with Honda HRC, a team that were a shell of their former selves at the time. Still they kept winning. In 2023, the Lawrence brothers both had what could be described as the single greatest year of pro supercross/motocross they ever had. Jett won the 250 West supercross championship, moved up to the 450 class in motocross, and he would go on to win all 11 rounds, all 22 motos. A perfect season. Hunter won the 250 East supercross championship, and would come out on top during a highly competitive 250 motocross season. Hunter's also set to make the jump to the 450 class in 2024.

One of the funniest parts of this story by far was the fact Ferrari took a long time to cop to their error. They brought out a series of excuses that ultimately circled around to admitting finally they'd just run out of fuel. To paraphrase: "He didn't run out of fuel, he had to stop because his fuel pump failed." "Why did it fail?" "There was no electrical power reaching it." "Why was that?" "Because the generator failed." "Why was that?" "Because it wasn't being turned." "Why wasn't it being turned?" "The car lost drive." "Why was that?" "Because the car ran out of fuel."

Formula 1 may the few among many motorsports where the vehicle of the driver becomes a firecracker outta happiness.

This race was the most chaotic and exciting one I have ever seen. I remember the Dutch commentator, Olav Mol, saying this could be the day Jos Verstappen could win the race in a Minardi! Sadly Jos showed precisely what he was made of. I have been a Kimi fan since he started in F1, but I remember that I was p'd off that Fisi wasn't deemed the winner. As I think about it, I do think this time was special in F1. There was a force for being more entertaining, while there were manufacturers all in for the money, with drivers that were sometimes "best of the club" racers. F1 seems too sterile for me, as it is today. I love the recap of this iconic, yet mostly forgotten race. Thank you.

Great video! I love that race too, so much even that I bought the Minichamps race specific model of Fizzy's Jordan, twice!

Brazil in the early 2000s and crashing your car where already was an incident and flags being waved is something else.

I remember it vividly, i was just 10 years old! Anyway Villeneuve and Panis weren't teammates in 2003, as Jacques was in BAR and Olivier in Toyota

Though I was never a Ferrari fan, I shed a few tears for Rubens - in every Sao Paulo race! (But especially when he was leading.) Then again he could make me cry when he won; his awesome first win can still turn me into a blubbering wreck! Those Webber and Alonso crashes, scared the bejeezus out of me. Back then I got all the races in full and live, so I never knew the outcome of a particularly nasty crash until the results were announced, sometimes not until the following race. Some crashes just aren't meant to be forgotten, clips available or not. This is definitely one (two?) of them.
