The Chargers pick Joe Alt at 5 would make so many chargers fans react negatively towards jim harbaugh and joe hortiz but it wouldn't be a TERRIBLE pick... just not the best pick. Joe Alt is a great LT but here is my full breakdown with film, on why I woiuldn't HATE the pick but wouldn't be happy either.
Los Angeles Chargers full 7 round mock draft of the 2024 NFL Draft this week. This is what i think Joe Hortiz and Jim Harbaugh would do as well as what I want them to do (mostly what i expect, so this is very realistic) I took Malik Nabers, Mike Sainristil, Junior Colson, Cade Stover, Beaux Limmer, Marist Liufau, Frank Crum, Frank Gore Jr., and Josh Wallace.
Joe Hortiz had his last interview before the 2024 NFL Draft and talked draft trades, WRs like Malik Nabers and Marvin Harrison Jr., QBs like JJ McCarthy, and teams like the Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, and New York Giants could affect their draft plans.
J.K. Dobbins signs to the Chargers and JK Dobbins signing to the Los Angeles Chargers means more to me than you think. What does this mean for Isaiah Spiller and Elijah Dotson? Will the Chargers draft a RB in the 2024 NFL Draft or in UDFA?
Jim Harbaugh talked to the media about the importance of the offensive line and Rashawn Slater, Zion Johnson, Bradley Bozeman, Jamaree Salyer, Trey Pipkins, and even Jordan McFadden! He also talked about the Chargers pick at 5 in the nfl draft in 2024, a trade down, or they might be forced to stay at 5th overall if the arizona cardinals, minnesota vikings, denver broncos, new york jets, new york giants, and new england patriots all aren't willing to cooperate in their favor.
Jim Harbaugh has now officially hired Jesse Minter, Greg Roman, Andy Bischoff, NaVorro Bowman, Marcus Brady, Steve Clinkscale, Shane Day, Mike Devlin, Mike Elston, Chris Gould, Sanjay Lal, Rick Minter, Robert Muschamp, Chris O'Leary, Dylan Roney, Marc Trestman, and Ryan Ficken.

If the Chargers pass on Malik Nabers or Marvin Harrison Jr. it BETTER be because they are trading down a getting a haul from the Vikings or some team like that. Staying at 5 and taking Joe Alt is my nightmare even though I think Joe Alt is probably gonna be a great player in the NFL. 🤷‍♂⚡

What if they get both in the first round? if they go with wr at #5, Harbaugh will want to get his guy as well and they could trade up and get the OL that Harbuagh wants and vice versa if they go Alt at #5 Hortiz will trade up and get his WR. That would be 👌

YOUR nightmare. As much as you talk about football, I din’t think you understand it very well. Alt’s talent will NOT be wasted on this team. One of those top 3 WRs will not be utilized in this offense to make that type of draft investment a good return. As of right now, can you name a better tackle duo in the NFL? Not really. GREAT PICK. Whoever Harbaugh drafts, we have to trust his process. He's always built his teams the same way. If he changes the way he builds his team, it might not be succesful. His way has always worked. If he chooses Joe Alt, he would build that o line to be the best in the nfl with his coaching. It might not be what we all want, but he's always been succesful his way. I would also want mhj/nabers/odunze over an offensive lineman

The biggest reason why I absolutely am 100% sure they won't pick Joe Alt, is because Joe is a LT, and we already have an All-Pro LT. And before anybody says it, LTs getting moved over to RT don't always work..and besides, you don't pick a LT at 5 just so you can move them to the right side. That doesn't make sense. Secondly, Joe Hortiz has said that he believes in picking the best player available, not from a place of need. And besides, our offensive line is not so thin that it would be considered a need at the number 5 position. OL is deep enough this year, that they can add depth at the second and third rounds if they want. Lastly, even Jim Harbaugh knows that you set up the run game with a good passing attack or threat. If the opposing team doesn't fear your passing attack, then they can 'stack the box', and have a better chance of stopping your run game. And our wide receiver room right now IS quite thin. And even if the Chargers added somebody like Tyler Boyd in free agency, they're still going to need a stud to be added so they can have that bona fide passing attack to set up the Run game.

Hey Michael what do you think about Giovanni Manu? He’s going to be available in the later rounds since he’s from Canada, 6’8 350lbs, 4.96 40 time, 33.5 vert. He had 11 teams doing pre-draft visits but he’ll still be in the later rounds I think it could be a steal

I’m guessing if Harbaugh drafts an O lineman in the first round, it is because of need AND because of historical bust rates of O lineman relative to other positions. For those that dare - google nfl bust rates by position. Compare OL to WR. The 33rd team has a pretty informative article. Again, do the research yourself.

Selecting a lineman at five is an idiot move. There will be plenty of good quality tackles in the third and forth rounds. If for some reason the Chargers lose their minds and think they don't need a top of the line WR, then for Petes sake take Brock Bowers! I've read that the Chiefs are champing at the bit to get him as a replacement for Kelce. That would be a nightmare scenario for the Chargers. Andy Reid knows something about drafting quality players.

I would be disappointed if we took an O lineman at 5. Heck, even if we trade down to 11. if Bowers is still on the board, I want Bowers over O line. if they get 11 and 23, draft O lineat 23. unless everyone takes O line in the 1st, there should be good ones left in the 2nd. You are NOT going to beat the chiefs with a run only offense. the chiefs frequently are behind at halftime, and then QUICKLY score and take the lead. look at the Bills game a couple years ago. they scored and took the lead with only 30 seconds left. the chiefs scored and WON the game. running teams are NOT going to consistently beat high scoring offenses. That is HOW the chargers have won games. Get a big lead and force teams to abandon the run. so yeah, I'll be pissed if they take O line with first pick.

Based upon BPA, Joe Alt is NOT rated ahead of Malek Nabers or Rome Odunze. I don’t believe they will trade down, since the value that they’re looking for will not materialize. IMO, and I believe MHJ is going 4 to AZ, it will be the BPA as it pertains to scheme fit and Jim Harbaugh type of guy. Rome Odunze, being a true X, a big receiver who catches everything in his catch radius and is the best run blocker is my pick. Remember that they wanted to replace Mike Williams. In this office, exact words from the coach’s mouth. Taking everything into account, that’s Rome Odunze. Joe Alt is a LT, not a RT. You don’t draft a player that high trying to fit a round peg in a square hole. You can’t experiment here. You need a proven commodity who can be a dominant force for this offense. Jim Harbaugh saw him in the Championship game . Rome Odunze, and only if MHJ is gone at 4.

I just ran my mock with a pick and stick all the way through and I'll post my results here. But I noted, to make my point. In Round 2, the best avail. was QB M. Penix Jr. Next after him was QB Bo Nix. Obviously we don't need them and I am NOT going to just take the "Best Avail. I took a WR in Round 1, but we can take 2. No OT was within the next 10. There was a Safety (Nubin) and Edge (Robinson and WR McConkey.. I wanted McConkey. But Edge or Safety woudl have been acceptable as there is at least some need there. Not QB. So I took the best WR available, not the "Best Available". Here is my results from Stick and Pick the whole way doing just this: (Zero Trades) 5. Malik Nabers WR LSU 37. Ladd McConkey WR Georgia 69. Jonathon Brooks RB Texas 105. Renardo Green CB Florida State 110. T'Vondre Sweat DT Texas (Slipped due to a Misdameanor Arrest. He's a steal at this point. Warran Sapp smoked some pott and fell and a lot of teams wish they had taken the chance on him) 140. Ty'Ron Hopper LB Missouri 181. Garret Greenfield OT South Dakota State 225. AJ Barner TE Michigan 253. Omar Speights LB LSU

I hate the whole "Best Player Available" BS. There is not one team ever that does that, EVER. Think about it. If the Chargers come time to draft and the best player avail is a QB? Should we take him? He's the "Best Player Available." When the draft happens and it's your turn to pick, you look at all the best players available and take the Best Player Available THAT ALSO FILLS A NEED. If your team is set at QB and a QB is the best avail. and your team is set at OT and OT is the next best... You need a DL, LB RB... You take the best player available that is one of those needs. There are 7 rounds, what if at each round, when your team's turn came around to draft, it was always the same position. Round 1, best avail = a QB, so you take it, round 2 Best = a QB, so you take it, Round 3.... and so on. At the end of the draft, you do not need a QB, and you took 7 of them? Really? No, no team would. If you need a WR and a WR is not among the top 5 or 10, but maybe a CB is or a DT or some other need is 2 or 3 from the very best avail. You reach only a few places and take THAT position that you do also need. You don't reach 30 40 players into a draft to pick a WR because that is what you need. Like the NY Jets taking a TE over Warran Sapp. The needed a TE more than a DT, but they did have a need for a DT, so you take the best avail. THAT AALSO fills a need. It's not one or the other, but a combination of both.

Drafting OL, specifically T is only a nightmare scenario for the young casual fans out there. “Generational” is nonsense. Every year someone claims a player is generational and they are a bust. Tackle has a longer shelf life of elite play than WR. The Chargers have a very weak OL and WR corps on a team switching philosophy from pass first to run first. Yes, Joshua Palmer shouldn’t be on the roster, QJ had a better year than Mike Williams rookie season but had problems and Davis really wasn’t tried…but instead of being a casual and using the meaningless term…try the term that wins in the NFL… Foundational. There are no foundational WRs. You see them moved when overpriced. Allen and Diggs just to name a few this year… But who do teams want to hold on to and move only when they can’t pay? Tackle.

Looks like your nightmare came to fruition. 😂😂 they needed a solid linemen. They can get a good receiver today in rd 2 or 3.

I am ok with selecting Alt and getting two wideouts in rounds 2 and 3. Football games are won and lost at the line of scrimmage. The Chargers haven’t had a decent Oline since LT was on the team. Everyone’s disappointment in not selecting a top name wideout would soon be forgotten when the Chargers become a perennial playoff team. Any combination of Brian Thomas, Adonai Mitchell, Keon Colman, Xavier Leggette, Ladd McConkey, Ja’Tavion Sanders and Ricky Pearsall could really excel with a top OL.

I like Harrison or Odunze. We need and they are X receivers. Nabers is amazing but he is a slot receiver. We need an X .

@@alecluzbetak1154 QJ is a failure at X. He was asked to do it all last year with Williams out. QJ is slow and can't get open he is the second worst in the league at getting open and he catches with his body. Tellesco drafted him because he is tall and has a large wing span But the wing span doesn't help as he is a body catcher. QJ doesn't win at contested catches. QJ only has success as a slot receiver.

@@alecluzbetak1154 You are right though. The Chargers drafted him with the idea that he would be the next X receiver. He just isn't good at it.
