The Chargers Offense Was Terrible Against the Seahawks and Easton Stick's Job is No Longer Safe

Serious conversations and decisions have to be made after the awful start the Chargers offense and Easton Stick had in their preseason opener. Even in an exhibition, having six consecutive three-and-out is inexcusable and unfortunately it feels like Stick has regressed since his starts last season. Dan and David breakdown the Chargers preseason opener including their intrigue in newly signed QB Luis Perez who gave the offense a spark on short notice. Not all was bad offensively because first round pick Joe Alt looked good in his first action on the right side, both pass protecting and in the run game. The guys also get into why they're encouraged by the showing of the defense with Jesse Minter's unit playing well. The defense got standout performances from linebackers Troy Dye and Nick Neimann, and Minter also very effectively created pressures with his defensive backs.

Hope Perez gets a lot of snaps in practice this week and then starts next preseason game so we can evaluate better. It’s pre season so I’m not too concerned right now. I trust in our new coaching staff. On another note, I’m so glad Ladd and Videl did not suit up for the game because one of them could’ve gotten hurt the way they were throwing across the middle. Hopefully Hurst is OK!!??

Harbaugh’s San Francisco 49ers lost 24-3 in their first preseason game in 2011. The offense managed just 10 first downs and 234 total yards. Always looked at preseason as player evaluation. A win would be nice, but for now it's not about the wins its about trimming the roster and finding the best players. It won't translate to regular season.

I don’t want to bash Easton, but the truth is, he should never have been put out there in all 5 years he’s been here. I’m sure he’s a good locker room guy, but he’s never had any real ability to perform as a QB from my eye test. He’s another example of Telesco’s childish draft choices that they never got rid of when it was clear he was never an nfl caliber back up qb. Telesco did that at so many positions with his draft choices.

We know the offense was horrible, and we never got to see what our receivers could do due to terrible QB play. I guess that will have to be evaluated in practice. And though the defense looked good, the 3rd and long, where the Seahawks kept getting first downs, reminded me of the Chargers' defense of the last few years. 3rd and long, our curse.

They also gave up two third +17 and +15 , I was furious when that happened! As well as your mentioned two dropped pick 6's! But you can't say there were no positive. The goal stand was great. The pass rush was nice , Nieman and Troy Dye had nice games! Tony Jefferson had a couple of nice plays!!

@@WesBDretroSinga well - he’s 29 years old, has been in 4 NFL training camps and played for 6 XFL/UFL teams. He’s had plenty of chances to prove he can be a legit backup. Kurt Warner got significantly fewer chances and got himself into the Hall of Fame. Perez hasn’t lacked opportunities and just isn’t going to be the answer at backup QB

My concerns with the offense showed up. Teams stack the box and receivers don't create separation, 3 and out, 3 and out. We're going to miss Allen and Williams. Herbert will help, but stuff the run, will the receivers get open?

Easton Stick should've been gone three seasons ago. Perez is too slow and doesn't have good lateral movement. He's nice, but better for the XFL. The defense did show up and were respectable. The offense was terrible in both games. This is not a team that is going anywhere soon. Season ticket holders have to be pissed off again! Harbaugh was a bad choice by Spanos. A decision he'll realize three years from now. Harbaugh even considering hiring CK puts his whole commitment into question? He's going backwards because he doesn't know what to do, and doesn't have answers. Bosa will come up hurt again and be out for the season. Herbert will re-injure his foot and he'll be out. Chargers will finish last, or second to last in their division again. Sad.

I know you guys tried to be positive and point out some positives, but on the offensive side of the ball you cannot put lipstick on this pig as they say. Most concerning was the offensive line really looked atrocious. I don’t recall a single play where they pushed the defense forward. They were stood up or pushed back and for a team that wants to be the bully what i saw was an oline that was bullied even with Rashawn in the game. I hope Alt becomes an all pro quickly, because what i saw in Malik Nabors i think he would have provided a much bigger impact on this team than Alt. My only hopium is that Jesse Minter’s defense looks like it is going to work and i am positive it will be way better than 4th and Staley.

What you want to do is pay attention to the players in the trenches on both sides of the line .offense and defense. The rest of the more skull players will show up when the lines are established and fortified

I think the fact that’s they are cross training safeties and nickle CB’s is so they can make more room on the roster for other positions. Same thing with McFadden being fullback/TE plus backup O line. At first I thought it might be to keep 7 receivers and maybe a 5th edge, but now i think it’s to keep 3 QB’s. Hopefully Stick isn’t one of them, I liked Perez though. Dude played with confidence

So.. I have been saying since before the end of last season that this team needs to protect itself with a quality QB2. Stick isn’t that, and is even worse now. He may have decent showings in practice in 7 on 7, etc, but full speed 11 on 11 is ugly. He panics, doesn’t see more than 7 yards past the LOS, and gets happy feet. He is just bad. On a short out to Stone, he had Rice running free on a deep seam for a TD. Didn’t even see him. Hopefully Perez can at least be adequate and manage games and not at the very least be a liability.

Don't get crazy. Seahawks had starters in and the team did well not great against them. There is a reason Justin Hebert makes what he makes. If yes out for the year. Let's prepare ourselves for a long season and get another high draft pick that will be a difference maker. We wilk be stacked with a another high draft and a healthy Herbert.
