I think the big thing this episode makes clear that doesn’t really *feel* clear until much later (if that makes sense) is that Azula is by far the worst threat that the team ever faces in this show. She’s like a hot knife cutting through any sense of safety.

Even all those years later, the way Zuko screams "LEAVE!" is still so Heartbreaking. Then their's the detail that Toph could feel through the ground that Iroh's heart wasn't beating. The look on her face, too.

2:06 i mean toph has been hidden away from the whole world by her father(remember the boys katara beat up said the beyfong family don't have a daughter) This is probably the first group of people around her own age she has ever hung out with. Some social unawareness is justified.

Oh totally especially since katara grew up in basically the opposite situation. A very small but closely knit together community that only survived after tragedy by working together. It’s no surprise that they clashed with each other

I know it’s been said multiple times that Mae Whitman’s voice and the often usage of abominations somewhat akin to water bending make Amity a lot like Katara in those aspects, but now I’m just imagining an edited version of TOH clips, Amity but with Katara VO. (maybe someone did that already)

I imagine there might be some people who claim that Katara’s comment about the stars to Toph is her not necessarily attacking her blindness but rather not remembering that Toph is blind and is more about her being in a tent. I however, do NOT think this is the case. Katara was clearly trying to get a rise out of Toph here and being under an earth tent would be no issue for a master earthbender like Toph to remove the roof off of or simply go outside to look at the stars. Friends sometimes say harsh things in the heat of an argument.

never saw someone say that, thats funny in a way, its the "my fav character would never do this" type of people, right? in Brazil we call that "passar pano", when you try to justify or minimize the actions of someone or some character. If someone ever say that, its the most passa pano i ever heard about Katara 😅

As a kid I never thought about it being about her blindness, I just thought she said it cuz she was in a tent 😂 So I can believe Katara forgetting she's blind in the heat of the moment cuz I did too (plus it's a running gag for them to forget she's blind 🤣)

As someone who also forgot she was blind the first time I watched the episode I give Katara the benefit of the doubt, but I also believe she said remembering full well that Toph was blind

@@LauraVivianYeah I understand that Katara is taking somewhat of a mother role in the group but she’s not perfect and sometimes lets her emotions get the best of her. She’s only 14 and teenagers tend to be far from perfect. This also isn’t the first nor the last time she’ll say something hurtful to someone close to her.

@@royalreptile923 yes, and i love that! These flaws and nuances are what makes a character believable, it enables them to grow eventually, specially for a child character that has a lot to learn yet. Thats why i don't care at all about simulation Katara from the live action, she has no personality, which is very sad for such a complete character like Katara.

When i was a kid, one of the things i most wished i could do was to have a tea time with uncle Iroh, just sit down with him and have tea, listen to whatever he has to say, i would take it for life, and i was 6 years old. Actually, i still want that, i would kill for that, and i never even liked tea.

Gods, I remember LOOSING it at Sokka's limp noodle arms and headbutt against Ty Lee as a teenager. I'd be breathless with laugher every time. Not to mention the legend, the icon, the meme: IM COMPLETELY CALM!!!

If you look closely at the group attack on Azula at the end, even Sokka joined in by throwing his boomerang at her. Since you see all the elements going in at once that draws your focus, but if you look you can see it flying in.

19:06 I feel like not enough people talk about this, but when Iroh gets hurt, Zuko isn’t even thinking about the Avatar anymore, to the point where he tells their group to leave.

So many emotions in every direction! With the exception of 1 episode Katara seemed like the perfect person to me in season 1 but Toph REALLY pushes her buttons. I love Iroh's character too he is in my top 3 characters and this episode is heartbreaking in so many ways.

The main reason why all the blind jokes in this series work is because Toph is such a capable and independent character that even her friends forget she can't see. I'm pretty sure this is the only case that could be seen as genuinely malicious. Every other one is just gut-wrenching. 😆

Wildly underrated episode!!! We have a series of episodes where one character’s choices matter the most. This is technically a break in the set. But it could also be seen as Azula’s chance to make choices. Lots of good character work. Prolonged stress can really tell who someone is. I like how our gan of heroes are too tired to think clearly and how that affects the group. When people making lists this is usually not in top ten but it is for me.

Two things It's such good writing about Katara's trauma with her mother so she's taking the role of group mom and two the fight with Auzla It's poetic that 💨💧🪨 and 🔥 are working together for the first time in 100 years
