14:50 Aang knew the answer because he was there 100 years ago shortly before the invasion. He ran away before the attack took place but he grew up in the Air Nomad culture so he knew that they didn't have a formal military. The Air nation were nomadic people and their philosophic beliefs promoted pacifism and non aggression.

Part of the reason Aang has a headband on his head is to hide his arrow, which symbolizes his mastery of Airbending (which would make his identity known to his enemies). Years later, his youngest son (Tenzin) and granddaughter (Jinora) also gained their arrows for mastering airbending.

Avatar is a phenomenal show. It's technically not an anime, as it's a Nickelodeon show made in the USA, but it's heavily inspired by Japanese animation. Despite being a "kids' show," it tackles serious topics like war, grief, nationalism, and even genocide. This episode does a good job portraying how children are indoctrinated with propaganda at a young age. In today's political climate, with so much disinformation in the media, I think this episode is especially relevant now more than ever. The show does a good job illustrating that although the Fire Nation are the "bad guys," life isn't so black and white, and many of the people who live there are good people but are themselves victims of a corrupt system; there are also plenty of bad people who live in the other nations that are oppressed by the Fire Nation. I think it honestly helped shape the way I see the world and how everyone is capable of good and evil, regardless of their upbringing. Also, without giving away too many spoilers, there's a character from the Fire Nation who, throughout the course of the show, has to try and deprogram himself, unlearning all the years of indoctrination that have skewed his perception of the outside world and thinking that those who are not his kind are inferior. The show does so in a very realistic and excellently-written way; imagine having to come to terms with the fact that everything you thought you knew was a lie. It's pretty remarkable for a show made by the same company that produced SpongeBob. Also, for context: the girl who ripped the sole out of the bottom of her shoe is named Toph, and she's completely blind. She's from the Earth Kingdom, and like others who are able to "bend," or manipulate the earth, she is very in tune with the ground beneath her feet. She is able to navigate by listening closely to sounds and sensing vibrations under her feet to judge where other people are in relation to her. She can only do this while she is barefoot, as having shoes on prevents her from being able to feel vibrations. In some ways, you could say she gets around almost like a bat does with sonar, or a dolphin using echolocation. It's viewed as a strength, not a disability, as this heightened connection with what she can feel instead of what she can see makes her the most skilled earthbender in the world. I imagine this show was very empowering to people with lifelong physical handicaps. Again, pretty impressive that Nickelodeon was able to achieve this! I hope you'll consider reacting to the whole show, as well as the follow-up series, The Legend of Korra, which is basically the next generation. I'd definitely tune in to every episode! Netflix also recently released the first season of a live-action adaptation, which has a mixed reception, but I think it's great so far and captures a lot of the same charm and spirit of the original animated series.

To give some context on this show, the world is divided by 4 nations, the earth kingdom, water tribes, air nomads, and the fire nation. 100 years ago the fire nation started a war to conquer the world and wiped out the air nomads hoping to kill the avatar, an airbender named Aang. They failed and Aang was frozen in ice for 100 years during a storm. He is discovered by 2 water tribe kids named Sokka and Katara and they go on a quest to help him learn the elements and bring balance to the world. By this point in the show the fire nation is close to finally winning the war, and our heroes are waiting for the day of the black sun, when an eclipse will prevent the firebenders from firebending and they can take out the fire lord. Til then they’re just biding their time

@@SchoolPrincipalReacts its also worth noting that as the intro points out, only the avatar can actually bend all 4 elements, however there is alot more to it than that. aside from the mortal world there is also a spirit world...and the avatar is seen as a spiritual mediator and leader of the entire world ontop of keeping peace between all the nations..its also thier job to keep peace between humanity, nature and the spirits. ontop ot that, much like the Dahli Llama, the Avatar actually reincarnates upon thier death and is reborn in a different nation each time in a specific order earth kingdom, fire nation, air nomads and watertibe...and then in the earth kindom again and so forth where they have to re learn the and master the elements each time....Avatar aang of course is an air nomad, and the next avatar will be reincarnated in the water tribe. finally as a side note....this show has been very highly praised as one of the best things Nickelodeon has ever produced..because alot of the inspiration of this fantasy world comes from real world asian and inuit culture...even the 4 bending styles were coriographed to follow the principles of 4 real martial arts (tai chi, bagwa, shaolin, and hungar).

Just a little context: 3:19 Headband is to disguised his arrow tattoo (which will give away his identity to the fire nation). 3:30 She took the souls in her shoes out because she is blind and can detect her surrounding by feeling vibrations in the ground through her earthbending. 3:38 Aang (main character and the one with the headband) was frozen in an iceberg for 100 years prior to the start of the series. 14:44 Aang is an air nomad (this last one to be exact hence the name of the show) so he knows what happened to his people and how they were wiped out by the Fire Nation. 18:47. As an air nomad, he is an airbender. Due to their element, airbenders are naturally evasive. (Kinda like how a leaf blows in the wind) 23:00. Yes. Just this episode though. To further elaborate on the comments - The Avatar is peacekeeper that has the ability to control (or bend) all four elements, and is a role that cycles through the four nations as each Avatar is reborn. During the time that Aang was trapped in the ice, the nationalistic Fire Nation driven by mentality of supremacy, began a conquest of the whole world. Throughout what became known as the “Hundred Year War,” the Fire Nation imprisoned and killed people of other nations with the ability to control the other elements. On his arrow tattoos, the air nomads were inspired by monks, and those who master air bending would be given said tattoos to show this. As all air nomads are gone due to the genocide, Aang is the only person in the world with these markers of the air nomads. Normally, one isn’t informed of their status of being the Avatar until their late-teen’s, but a council of the air nomads made an exception given the rising threat of the Fire Nation’s ambitions. This explains why it has fallen on a twelve year-old boy to be the world’s savior. In regards to clothing, not too dissimilar to real life, different countries/societies have different fashion and clothing that is foreign can easily give someone away, hence why the kids stole clothes to avoid detection. As to why the kids are on their own: - Aang’s entire people and culture are dead - Sokka and Katara’s mother was killed during a Fire Nation raid and their father is leading a squadron in the war - Toph, a blind girl from a wealthy family who wanted to control her, ran away after being held prisoner in their home to train Aang in mastering earth bending.

Sokka and Katara are siblings ( Sokka is the oldest, unless you add 100 years on Aang) 4. The fire nation are the most technologically advanced of the 4 nations in the show 5. Despite being blind, Toph (a girl) is fiercely independent after being a sheltered rich girl

It has opened up a lot of conversations between children and thier parents. This is one of the episodes that shows that the people of the fire nation aren't inherently evil. They just have an evil govornment, which is another discussion the show has about context and nuance between individuals

0:54, the premise is that the world is divided into four nations based on the four elements each of which has certain people capable of controlling the national element and there’s also someone called The Avatar who is capable of controlling all four elements. Whenever the Avatar dies, he’s reincarnated as a member of another elemental nation. The evil Fire Lord Sozin wanted to conquer the world in the name of the Fire Nation but feared the Avatar would stop him. Since he knew the next Avatar would be born an Airbender, he killed all the Airbenders but before he did that an Airbender named Aang found out he was the Avatar and ran away fearing his responsibilities only to be frozen in an iceberg and cryogenically preserved for 100 years. So now, Aang has to learn to control the other three elements so he can stop the Fire Nation from taking over the world

19:08 - South Korean schools have (or had--no idea if this has changed since early 2000's) this method where they put the two fighting students inside an empty classroom to let them duke it out until they get it out of their system. Aang is 112 years old. Basically right before the war started he ran away from home due to the shock of learning about his duties of being the Avatar. Usually Avatars are told at the age of 16 or more but in situations like this, they are told early to start their training to maintain worldly balance. When he ran, it was during a storm, he was swallowed up by the sea and his body as a defense mechanism activated his avatar powers n he has been frozen for 100 years. His people has been wiped out and he is the last airbender. Aangs journey is basically him and his found family traveling the world, training in the other bending discipline and trying find a resolution the 100 years war.

But the air nomads have since been exterminated and only the account of the Fire nation, who had exterminated the Air nomads, remains. It's definitely a "history is written by the victors" situation. also yeah this series is very enjoyable, even for an older audience. It tackles some surprisingly real and heavy topics like grief and war in a way that's accessible to kids but can be still be appreciated by adults.

Aang wasn't there when the Fire Nation attacked his people (he was frozen in ice at the time), but he would have known that they didn't have a formal military. The Air Nomads were a very peaceful culture who generally try to avoid violence and, while they would have tried to defend themselves, never would have attacked any of the other nations (hence the lack of a military). Sozin the Fire Lord at the time this war started, wanted to "share the prosperity of the Fire Nation with the rest of the world" through military means, manifest destiny style. To convince the citizens to go along with and participate in this, they're given a very skewed perspective on their own as well as world history, and in some cases outright lied to.

This show is so near and dear to my heart. I watched it from when it first aired all the way up to the finale's premiere. And this episode is very interesting from a worldbuilding perspective. Throughout the series, the Fire Nation has been this looming, antagonistic force with a few individual villains to serve as faces for the threat, but here we see that the Fire Nation is more than just that and that it has ordinary people just living their lives. But it also shows the viewers of the effects of the war in the Fire Nation, itself. Things like the use of propaganda to indoctrinate young citizens as well as history books teaching things the audience knows to be false help to reinforce the believability of the setting. Aang is an Air Nomad and knows for a fact that his people were pacifists and were killed in an act of genocide, yet the Fire Nation teaches a very different narrative to uphold its ideology and promote its regime. The schools are also shown to be a means of restricting individual expression and free thought through excessive discipline and fear, again serving to reinforce indoctrination. It truly is a wonderful series with so many layers and different threads to pick apart. It has phenomenal worldbuilding, beautiful animation and music, excellent voice acting, an intriguing plot, and some very heartwarming themes and messages.

15:54 Ok so most of the instruments in the ensemble are based on actual Asin instruments. At 16:05 the stringed instrument is actually modeled after Mongolian horse head fiddles or Morin khuurs. I'm not sure what specifically the drums and flutes are specifically based on but they're likely based on traditional Chinese or Japanese instruments since that's what aesthetics the Fire Nation mostly borrows from. The tsungi horn (the thing Aang was playing) is not a real instrument, it's original to the Avatar universe. From what I can tell it's basically just a combination of various brass instruments from all over the world.

3:38 Nah, people usually do not live that long in that universe (with very few exceptions). The Headband school boy with the blue arrow is Aang aka the Avatar aka the Last Airbender. The reason he is the last Airbender is because 100 years ago the Fire Nation launched an invasion against the Air Nomads (tribe of Airbenders) and exterminated them. Aang only survived because (as the Avatar) he unknowingly covered himself in ice and survived in hiding for about 100 years until being rescued by the dark-skinned tall girl named Katara. So technically Aang is 12+100 = 112 years old here. BTW, the short blind girl named Toph is from the Earth Kingdom. An Earthbending prodigy, easily among the greatest Earthbenders (not including Avatars) at such a young age.

This is the first time this channel's popped up in my algorithm and I was really pleasantly surprised to find this reactor to be so knowledgeable about music history and music education. Props for analyzing the nature of the imagined instruments in this story (they are fictional, but derived from Asia-descended instruments). The instrument Aang plays sort of reminded me of the medieval Serpent, the predecessor to the tuba and sousaphone. It had a more nasal, stifled timbre. It's closer to the sound of the instrument Aang is playing than the modern tuba or sousaphone because it was made of bone and horn instead of metal.

Another interesting detail! The dances Aang show the kids are also (if I recall correctly) fire bending moves! Which means that they are a form of controlling fire. In this universe, bending is a lot like martial arts. Actually, the ways the characters move when using a certain element are all based on actual martial arts. Fire bending, for example, is based on a system of Shaolin. I think it was the Northern Shaolin system. Water bending was based on Tai Chi. Earth bending is based on Hung Gar and Chu Gar. And I think I remember they based air bending on Baguazhang. Anyway, in real life, using martial arts movements in dancing is not unheard of. The most common being the Capoeira.

I just recently discovered your channel after watching the Matilda reaction. Avatar is one of my favorite shows, and I'm glad you got a kick out this episode and picked up on some of the imperialist ideals in the school. I was actually quite impressed with your knowledge of music history and composition. Not everyone can throw out concepts like 4 part harmony and atonalism. Did you study music at some point?

Hey - welcome to the channel. Yes! I taught music before becoming a principal. My first two degrees are in Trombone Performance and Music Education. 🎶

There are some other Disney Channel shows that include some high school stuff. #Amphibia shows a human school in a couple of scenes from one of the finale episodes of season three, and has an episode in season two which is a commentary on college. #TheGhostAndMollyMcGee and #MoonGirlAndDevilDinosaur include multiple episodes that involve school concepts and authority Figures. #KimPossible and #TheProudFamily are two examples from the early 2000s which include multiple episodes that focus a little more on the high school environment that the kids inhabit. The latter actually had a reboot in recent years, and there are multiple episodes pertaining to school, including one where one of the teachers was homeless and squatting in the school, and another involving essentially an activism teacher. I would truly recommend checking all of these out. The Episode lists are sure to be on Wikipedia.

15:16 is the most interesting part of your reaction due to your observation having no context to the rest of the show. History is definitely taught differently based on the school district more so than math or science.

I would love to see you react to the Avatar the Last Airbender series as a whole. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to see you react to it.

I know its a not so popular recomendation. But i hope one day he could react at My little pony (GEN 4) at twilight behavior with homeworks, or the little school of CutieMarkCrusaders or the friendship academy, because he could react and comment something about it. I love your reactions :3

The show takes place during a 100 year global war. Think of the Fire Nation as Germany during WW2 and all the other Nations as the Allies. And just like Germany in WW2, The Fire Nation attempted a mass genocide on a group of people who called themselves "Air Nomads" who tattoo arrows on there skin as part of their cultural beliefs/tradition...The main boy, Aang, is the only survivor.
@muhammadnumair5482Ай бұрын
The four nations are not against each other just the fire nation which wanted to conquer the world and thus the hundred years old war started and only aang is a hundred years and appa as well due because both were stuck in ice for 100 years.

Let's see if we can get some traction on some Fillmore reactions, they have it in 4K on KZbin. It's an animated middle school crime drama with great lessons and plenty of tropes from the crime genre, its Principal reacts gold 👍🏾😉

It's kind of like homeschooling in that Aang doesn't (usually) learn his bending in a school setting but has to travel the world to find his teachers.

SPOILERS! summary of Aang: he's an airbending master who was born 112 years ago at the Southern Air Temple. when the air nomad masters told him earlier than expected that he's the Avatar, the other kids began to treat him differently. he became an outcast. all he had left of normalcy was his mentor/father figure, Monk Gyatso, who was trying to give Aang a childhood. the other masters did not like how Gyatso was being with Aang, so they insisted they be separated so Aang can begin his Avatar training. Aang overheard the conversation, left a note, and ran away on his flying bison, Appa. Monk Gyatso later on came to Aang's room, and started to say "Aang, I won't let them separate us" but he then realized Aang wasn't in his room. and on his bed he found a note from Aang saying he was running away. Monk Gyatso immediately became overly worried for Aang as there was a major thunderstorm going on. The storm proved to be too much for Appa. they crashed in a body of water and both were unconscious. Aang's Avatar State kicked in (basically it's a defense mechanism that tries to keep the Avatar alive, and also bestows unimaginable power to the Avatar), and he, with the help of the Avatar State, waterbended an ice sphere around him and Appa. they were both trapped in that iceberg for 100 years
