Skip to 11:51 if you're only after seeing the art being drawn.
I open and react to the products for the first 12 minutes.
Photo of the finished thing:
....
Honestly, this challenge was created to experience something in a more humbling manner - it puts into perspective how far I've come in 12 years - when I was using supplies like this all the time.
Having expensive art supplies is never necessary, with art, you must practice, practice, practice. Observe that which you enjoy drawing, people, landscapes, animals. Look at photos and videos! Draw, trace (never put tracings online though!) and experiment before you commit to something like Copics or a Cintiq.

I was walking with my mom into a store, and I was telling her how bad the nibs on my markers were. I was like, "My nibs are old and crusty, I really need to fix it." And she asked me if I wanted to go to the pharmacy to get a medication to fix it. *face palm *sigh. "Markers mom, MARKERS", "You still want to stop by the pharmacy?"

how is she being snobbish? if something cost one pound, I'm sure you wouldn't have got it for its quality. she has explained in her video about how she used to use worse art supplies when she was a kid, and she also mentioned how she was mistaken about the quality for some of the supplies. for example, the watercolor. if she had used a good brush or at least a student quality brush with those same water colors, it would have turned out much better. she wasn't complaining about them before she even used them, and I'm sure if most of you got the same ones you wouldn't have felt good about them either. it's a matter of circumstance, she's an adult and she is working and earning money, so it is her right to treat herself and make investments in higher quality items to make her art better, as she also uses that to earn money. if you are a kid, maybe around twelve, and don't have the money to spend on all these expensive art supplies, then you could try to make things work. Daiso is good.
@sabiealdover
@sabiealdover 8 жыл бұрын
PREACH! And Daiso is good indeed. I bought my first two sketchbooks from there and my first 0.5 mechanical pencils from there, and I have to say, the quality of the stuff they have there is pretty good-- if you take care of the things you buy from there, at least. I really like their sketchbooks. No regrets on buying stuff from Daiso. But then I ended up buying all my art stuff from National Bookstore. Haha.

Everyone always complain's about "oh I use these art supplies, I can't afford nice ones", but too be fair, these are awful supplies. I'm only 14, and I just spent forever saving up so I could afford my Caran D'ache aquarelle's, and I get art supplies for my birthday. It's not /that/ hard to get actually good stuff, and this woman does have a job all said and done. If you could afford high quality supplies, you'd buy them, no?

I don't get why people are being negative about her honest opinion on the products and most of the commenters seem like they have never been to poundland and don't know the actual quality of the products
@EzmeCM98
@EzmeCM98 9 жыл бұрын
I laugh at all the people who were saying she was being annoying when she was talking about the supplies and how shes a 'snotty brat' or shes 'privileged' or whatever. Having expensive or non-expensive art supplies has nothing to do with 'being privileged' or 'having a little extra money that the rest of us dont have.' The supplies are bad to her because shes use to using other supplies that are good quality based on the student and artist grade supplies scale, where you all bashing on her think the student grade or 'cheap' supplies are good because you're use to using them and/or have never used artist grade supplies before. So before you bash on others calling them names or assuming you know their life story how bout you think logically or compare student grade from artist grade and think about how long you've been using those supplies and how long the other person as been using their supplies.

Jeez the toxicity in these comments is just ridiculous. For all those that are complaining because "I use cheap products because it's all I can afford, they're not that bad, etc etc", keep in mind that cheap products are cheap for a reason. Yes, occasionally you may stumble upon some supplies that work pretty decently for the price, but at the end of the day they're a cheap product. You may not be able to afford more expensive supplies at the moment, but when you can, and when you eventually do use more high end products, you'll see the blatant difference in quality and finally understand that you were whining on this video for no reason. I myself use low end (barely) student grade supplies (mostly prang, crayola, etc), and I can make them work just fine. But I have also used higher end supplies in my portfolio class in school, just as I have also used supplies that don't even qualify as student grade because they're absolute crap (like the ones in this video), and I know which are better.

Oh God not the shiny scratchy toilet paper, why anyone ever thought that stuff would be a good Idea is beyond me. I could never get on with the Derwent colour soft pencils, they always felt to chalky for my tastes. before I settled on Prismacolor I bought a couple pencils from the colour soft, faber castell pollychromos and prismacolor ranges to compare them. I thought the pollychromos had the smoothest look to them, but the prisma's blended a bit better, so prismas won ^_^ I love your character, she's so cute =D especially that sleeping budgie, it's adorable

At 'Mad' below - I can't reply to you as you don't seem to have replies enabled :) Ballpoints are great! My fiancé uses ballpoints all the time and works really well with them. I don't recommend them if you're going for the typical Copic/Manga look - manga and such is drawn with ink and brush, or pigmented ink pens. It's just a different look, and one I'm not very good at being so enamoured with brush pens :') I don't even use my Multiliners any more, I prefer a more dynamic nib, rather than a static one! However, I used to use biros for inking back in the days when I was trying to make my own manga. It looked awful in every respect, but using ballpoints for this reminded me of it :B

Some cheap art supplies are worse than others. I think a lot of people miss the point of this challenge, which is that talent is infinitely more important than supplies when it comes to art, not to rub in the fact that lower price usually means lower quality. When you can't afford Copic markers, or even the lower priced alcohol based markers, you learn to find the highest quality you can for the lowest price. Keep trying, you'll find cheap markers that don't suck, you'll find cheap pencils that work well, don't let supremacy stop you!
@nemothepenguin174

If you practice with cheap art supplies and adapt yourself with them and find good techniques then you can find yourself doing work that will look just as good as copic. It won't look like copic but it will be equally as awesome.

Lovely video! This is always quite a fun thing to do - I know what you mean about it feeling like it's 'freeing' to use these kinds of supplies, using more expensive ones can feel like a lot of pressure when things aren't going your way! In reply to the clouds and the watercolour background - yes, with watercolour you DO just leave the white of the page to show through when you want there to be white on the page. While white paint (usually gouache) is an option, I hear that some watercolour purists would hiss at the idea - the 'thinking ahead' involved to leave the white is supposedly part of the skill of the medium. But I'm amazed and impressed at how well you managed with that brush!!

With making water color clouds, leaving space will work, but the best way to do it in my opinion is to paint the whole surface, and then dab with a dry tissue or paper towel where I want the clouds to be. Though that works better on watercolor cold press paper

You were wondering about watercolour technique ... my high school art class and my dad (MFA) tell me that watercolour should be bright and gestural, not overwrought, and yes white clouds would be done just by leaving the paper bare in that place. Look at some Japanese watercolour-ink paintings, sometimes they leave lots of white space and it looks like the whole scene is happening in a foggy, misty wilderness.

OK Draw i think if your bad at art the more expensive supplies wont help, but if you are decent, cheap supplies dont help. But you dont need to go expensive, just better quality, find what works for you.

Honestly I hate this challenge becasue everyone uses cheap art supplies.I use most of it the majority of the time and that's where they start off.Not everyone can afford these awesome supplies.The most expensive supply I do own is copic markers and the funny fact is I do digital most of the time which is so weird of me having tradionally supplies but ehh I only use em when the computer is occapated by my other family members or if I'm at school. But the only thing I do like about this challenge is it proves you don't need good supplies to create good art which is repeated so many times but I don't care.Good quality supplies can make your art more "quality" but it never will increase your skill Cute drawing by the way!Keep doing what you gotta do

18:25 blending with cheap felt pens - scribble the color on a non absorbent surface like plastic and use a brush and water to apply the color. You can thereby get all shades up to the color straight out of the pen. ;)

I'm not one to usually say this but, yousaid you didn't want to sound like a snob, but you really do. The stuff you used for this is the stuff I use and its not THAT bad, at east not like you were making out. WOW You can afford copic markers, we get it, they're brilliant, the best around!!! But still, appreciate the stuff you get, the is the first video I've watched of yours. I hope it gets better :/ Still, nice art :)

Dark Star I am so sorry if I came across that way! I really wanted to highlight how much I need to learn from art supplies as being immersed in professional products can really hinder your artistic growth, and I was ashamed at how much I'd relied on them. There's never anything that I don't appreciate (which annoys my partner a lot because I keep too much stuff!) so I really regret sounding this way to you, it was never an intention of mine! Please forgive me~ Thank you though, and I hope I don't disappoint you with other videos! :)

Dark Star Aaah no it's fine, you were right to say what you did! And I really hope it goes well for you getting a summer job! Especially if you can handle cheaper supplies, you're a better artist than me

It doesn't matter what art supplies you use, although I can understand how people who are used to more high quality supplies can feel out of their element. None of these supplies were bad, and you can see the piece of art she made was still very good. So to people who think you need the most expensive art supplies to make something beautiful, you don't. :)

Allison Dickerson Well said! :) The good thing about expensive equipment is it's better for those who are in it for the long haul. Cintiqs, Copics, Polychromos, Artist grade pigments are all longer lasting, better quality etc, but there's no point if someone isn't going to benefit from it. Artistic ability comes from the determination to practice and succeed, regardless of the equipment :)

Hey! I'm 6th grade (Here in Bulgaria 6th grade is 11.5 - 13 year olds) and our art teacher doesn't let us use colored pencils, anymore, because we were too big for them, but I see you use here, is it good or bad that she doesn't let us, and do you think only little kids should use them? btw, our art teacher is really good, she has a few hyperrealistic portraits and a few reaaaally good nature landscapes.

Yes, in 5th grade (we were 5th like 5 months ago) a boy from my class drew a hyperrealistic portrait of our school patron (the schools here are named after patriots) and she liked it, but because it was with pencils she wrote the mark 4 (2 the lowest and 6 the highest).

I have a trick for making cheap colored pencils softer and easier to work with (yes I know tips for the cheap products) take a cup of hot water (not boiling, but hot to you) and put the pencils in. After a few minutes you can use them. Just a little tip artist to artist.

I never buy sets, even if they're cheap. I always buy my art tools separately. Like, if I need a blue pencil, I'll just buy the blue pencil, not a complete case with all the colors of the rainbow. It's a lot cheaper that way, and I rarely have art tools that I don't use.

One time I asked my mum for a sketchbook and she came home with a crappy kids home bargains pad of paper and you could litreally smudge pencil on it! The sheets were so thin but I worked with it and got good feedback on my artwork!
